ianschmitz··on Fedora Slimbook II Available
It’s interesting to see the larger laptop have the smaller battery of the two.
ianschmitz··on Microsoft confident Windows on Arm could beat Apple with Snapdragon X Elite
1.38% of $10B is a lot of money. I’m not saying they care though.

I guess they aren’t familiar with the newer WebTransport API?

ianschmitz··on How I replaced deadly garage door torsion springs (2002)
I recently had mine serviced and the spring I have is original (~30 years old) and looking a little old. I asked the installer if I should replace it and he said “no. They don’t make them like they used to. They don’t last nearly as long. Wait until this one gives up”
ianschmitz··on How I replaced deadly garage door torsion springs (2002)
Oof. Just because you did it yourself does not mean it wasn’t extremely dangerous, or that the average home owner should attempt it. There’s an incredible amount of energy stored in those springs when wound up
ianschmitz··on Tesla goes after Cybertruck owners selling their electric pickup trucks
Software that doesn’t change, heated seats that don’t require a subscription, not selling your location data, able to repair yourself
ianschmitz··on Open-Source Observability – SigNoz
That’s the definition of minimal? 0.5 of a core while doing nothing?
ianschmitz··on Benchmarking PostgreSQL Connection Poolers: PgBouncer, PgCat and Supavisor
Would be interesting to hear a response from Supabase, since their recent move off of PgBouncer on their platform.

It’s sad that so many tech companies are pressured to grow or die. It feels rare to see folks build stable, healthy growth businesses these days. Gotta burn through all the cash and get that next round of funding!
ianschmitz··on Death Valley National Park now offering a rare opportunity – kayaking
Whoa, Big Gulps, huh? All right! Well, see you later!
ianschmitz··on Langchain $25M Series A, Langsmith GA
Who has actually found LangChain useful in their projects? Any time I’ve looked at their docs I’ve found myself wondering why I’d want this abstraction over using something like the OpenAI SDK directly.

Even something as simple as getting the token usage from the response was challenging or not possible last time I checked.

ianschmitz··on Mistral AI launches Mixtral-Next
I’m pretty new to running these locally, but here’s my understanding:

Best models currently: codellama or deepseek coder. 6.7B or 1B depending on how much latency you can tolerate

Treesittee: from looking at the logs of the chat completions requests for Continue or Twinny extensions for VS Code, they both appear to just send a chunk of the document as well as a special placeholder to indicate where the cursor currently is.

ianschmitz··on Asahi Linux project's OpenGL support on Apple Silicon officially surpasses Apple
That sounds like how raster image rendering works on most mapping applications? The tiles are loaded on demand as you pan/zoom
ianschmitz··on Apple has not fixed the macOS audio left/right balance bug for nearly 10 years
In my experience the slider definitely moves. You can see it in real time with the settings page open
ianschmitz··on Wi-Fi jamming to knock out cameras suspected in nine Minnesota burglaries
The key needs to be continuously present for the car to continue running. Unless I’m missing something in your story?

ianschmitz··on Microsoft Teams outage causes connection issues, message delays
Crazy! How can a browser tab launch another process? My understanding was each tab was its own singular process?
ianschmitz··on Ask HN: De-Googling my life: Alternatives to Google Sheets?
I’m running Immich on my home server and it has been great. The syncing on iOS doesn’t seem to want to automatically upload so I have to manually go in and click the sync button sometimes. Otherwise it’s been great!
ianschmitz··on Show HN: I made a website to find best bus seat to avoid the sun while traveling
Not all routes are a straight line. The time of day also matters…
ianschmitz··on Sentry will use user data to train AI models without user consent
Are there any alternatives that are as comprehensive and nice to use as Sentry?

I’ve been growing more and more disappointed with the JS bundle size growth over the last few years, some of which can be mitigated by webpack config hacks (https://docs.sentry.io/platforms/javascript/guides/nextjs/co...) but it’s still quite a large portion of the production bundle.

ianschmitz··on Show HN: I'm open-sourcing my game engine
Why would you need Okta for a simple Google sign in? A simple traditional Google OAuth flow should work just fine.
ianschmitz··on PostgREST: Providing HTML Content Using Htmx
It’s interesting to see both PostgREST and Hasura (two similar ish tools) are both built on Haskell. I don’t see too many Haskell projects in the wild. I wonder what prompted them both to use it. Neat!
ianschmitz··on NASA says SpaceX’s next Starship flight could test refueling tech
Smarter Every Day on YouTube recently spoke at the American Astronautical Society about this flight plan. I found it quite interesting how different it is compared to the way we used to go to the moon decades ago. He challenges the complexity of the new flight plan, including the refuelling step.

It’s a longer episode but well worth the watch if you enjoy the channel and are excited about returning to the moon.

ianschmitz··on Robert De Niro accuses Apple of censoring awards speech
Interesting timing since The Problem with Jon Stewart was just recently canceled. Sounds like he planned to do an episode on China and another on AI and Apple didn’t like that.
ianschmitz··on Fish – Update on the Rust port
As someone who uses zsh + spaceship, what benefits would I gain moving to fish as my main shell? I don’t write many bash scripts so the scripting side is less of a concern.
ianschmitz··on Ask HN: OAI employees who signed to follow Sam, what was your decision process?
That’s GPT if I’ve ever seen it
ianschmitz··on Ask HN: Is Unlimited PTO a Scam
It is done primarily as a benefit to the company on the accounting side to remove the vacation and sick days liabilities from their balance sheets.

It can also look attractive to employees, but I recall studies showing that employees take less time under these plans

ianschmitz··on Mint is shutting down, and it's pushing users toward Credit Karma
