ianlevesque··on The Case for Memory Safe Roadmaps
Yeah, I've wondered a bit if the Spectre class of vulnerabilities was discovered a couple decades sooner if it would have changed the course of history there.
ianlevesque··on The Case for Memory Safe Roadmaps
Encouraging. I hope the increasing drumbeat of awareness and advocacy around this reaches a critical mass soon. I'm not naive enough to think it will solve all security problems, but it will reduce the attack surface so, so much.
ianlevesque··on Show HN: Watering my Christmas tree with ESPHome
I love it, but if you just want to water a tree the siphons work really really well.
ianlevesque··on Tesla shares 48V architecture with other automakers
Just don't try that with wet hands.
ianlevesque··on The Omnichord will be re-produced to commemorate our 70th anniversary
That’s amazing. Never knew.
ianlevesque··on Choose your own IP
From the extensive blog posts about all the tricks they already use, I’d assume they’ve squeezed all the juice from that orange.

ianlevesque··on He blew the whistle on Amazon. He's still paying the price
This website doesn’t ever work as a paywall bypass anymore. Just captchas for days.
ianlevesque··on iMessage, explained
The messaging space also had the amazing Adium client during the last round of messaging wars, and less amazing Trillian as reverse engineered clients distributed or sold. I for one am excited to see this space heating back up.
ianlevesque··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Ask someone with 32-bit Mac apps about Apple’s willingness to leave parts of their userbase behind.
ianlevesque··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Yes, they are. You already don't get OS updates.
ianlevesque··on Three gaming-focused Linux operating systems beat Windows 11 in gaming benchmark
From using PopOS, mostly for other reasons like out of the box drive encryption and nvidia support, the DE's purpose as far as I can tell is mostly to provide a reasonably user-friendly tiling window manager without replacing all of Gnome. Though now they are also replacing all of gnome in the next major release, so who knows.
ianlevesque··on uBlock Origin rules for HN: removing MSM news sources reduces systemic stress
Mainstream Media I assume.
ianlevesque··on A Nouveau graphics driver update
It does sound sort of elegant to me too, but then I remember that the EFI partition is FAT32 and the desire to use it fades.
ianlevesque··on SEthernet: Modern, low-cost 10/100 Ethernet for the Macintosh SE and SE/30
Half the time people with new projects just forget to choose one. He could put up a completely non commercial license if he wanted. It doesn't even have a copyright notice right now, making simply overlooking that so far the most plausible explanation.
ianlevesque··on A Nouveau graphics driver update
Bootloaders support all the common root filesystems now, and even less common like zfs & btrfs. Just leave the bootloader where it is and use a directory in root for the kernel & initramfs.
ianlevesque··on A Nouveau graphics driver update
These tiny boot partitions are such a self-inflicted wound in linux distributions. I do agree there's a lot of people in the same boat, but maybe the solution is to offer some sort of migration out of that state.
ianlevesque··on The weirdest bug I've seen yet
I get that people don't care or understand this, but that's also saying he cc's OpenAI, and therefore probably Microsoft, and therefore almost definitely the NSA, on all his business communications. What a world.
ianlevesque··on You do need a technical co-founder [video]
I think ChatGPT will eventually be good at the garble of weird text. It's immensely helpful already but you really must be checking up on what it is telling you. Plausible but non-existent or incorrectly used APIs are routine still. I definitely bet on it eventually getting there though.
ianlevesque··on The Washington Post Will Pause Its Advertising on X
I rather like X. It immediately reminds everyone about the midlife crisis that both the service and its new owner are publicly going through.
ianlevesque··on Why Isn't Landfill Mining More Popular?
Yeah, people have also gotten mealworms to eat Styrofoam. My concern is more that the plastics industry successfully pushed plastic recycling heavily with marketing so that growth of their products would continue, even as said recycling was just dumping the material in developing countries where it mostly ended up burned or in the ocean. There can be a huge, huge disconnect between technically possible and what happens in the real world.
ianlevesque··on Why Isn't Landfill Mining More Popular?
> once we develop bacteria to break this stuff down in an environmentally friendly way

Sounds as mythical as plastic recycling to me to be honest.

ianlevesque··on Meta allows ads saying 2020 election was rigged on Facebook and Instagram
Limits on ballot drop-offs that mostly affect urban, democrat leaning counties: https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/27/politics/texas-supreme-court-...

Destroying equipment the USPS would use to handle the unusually large number of mail-in votes: https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/21/politics/usps-mail-sorting-ma...

All coinciding with a large, engineered, split in pandemic cautiousness about attending in-person voting stalls between the two main parties. There are more examples, gerrymandering is a decades-long one, but most of what I've read & heard about 2020 was about forcing people to wait in long lines or vote in person when that would favor one party over the other.

ianlevesque··on AWS to start charging for IPv4 usage, but critical services don't support IPv6
This comes up every time, but it doesn't make any sense. Routers, software, IT professionals, would've all been just as happy to not support IPv4.1 as they have been to not support IPv6. At this point though the inflection point has already been passed adoption-wise and AWS needs to just do the thing already.
ianlevesque··on We're sorry we created the Torment Nexus
Social media? Try world leaders directly. Hell, try reading an HN thread anytime it comes up. The lies find a way.
ianlevesque··on Apollo astronaut Frank Borman has died
In the United States the space race led to a ton of STEM education, and secondary technology use cases. It would amazing to get similar benefits in those countries.
ianlevesque··on Doctors complete first successful face and whole-eye transplant
Plot twist: everyone's favorite color is the same, to them.
ianlevesque··on Guava: Google core libraries for Java
Yes custom class loaders can solve this. Eclipse had an entire OSGI module system that did this among other things. In general though Java (and Kotlin) have been trending toward simpler and lighter though for years and I’d recommend just sorting out your dependencies, even drop some, to avoid that kind of thing.
ianlevesque··on Chamberlain blocks smart garage door opener from working with smart homes
They used CloudFlare's anti-bot features.
ianlevesque··on Still no love for WPA3 on the Raspberry Pi 5
I didn’t know WPA3 had parallelizeable encryption. That is great.
ianlevesque··on Still no love for WPA3 on the Raspberry Pi 5
Yes, it sure does.
