iamNumber4··on Why don’t business leaders consider good coder for management?
Right now I’m managing a team of 10, and still find the time to do some coding. Any more than 10 I need to charge members to be team leaders to take burden off when I know it is too much,

If you manage through stewardship, explain tasks and expectations, trust your report will make the right decisions. Then it’s mostly monitor allowing people good at their jobs to do their job. Then constant conversations individually, stand ups are great, but one on one as well every day.

I still find time to take ease to put down tasks. However most of my time is designing and grooming tasks, directing traffic, and unblocking my development team.

The job of a manager is to get out of the teams way, and to stay on top of roadblocks to keep all the lanes open. I also take responsiblity for watching out for process/workflow improvements to always keep improving, faster, better, less effort as that means more work done in less time and resource strain.

Also try to get your severance in months of pay and not hard dollar amounts if you can. Severance is a win win, as the business doesn’t have to pay you now and has no impact on the current bottom line. So at the surface there is no impact to throwing you a bone if they let you go. where I gets fun is when you rack up 6-8 months, as then they have to make you happy, or their paying you and a new employee (your replacement) for the terms of severance.

Having it in months, then it is based on current rate pay on exit, so if you get significant future raises even more pain for them on exit.

iamNumber4··on Why don’t business leaders consider good coder for management?
And another thing, having severance will protect you from future mangers that fill the role you were trying for, especially if that position had authority over you. Bad managers, like things their way, some even build shit lists of employees they want out. So they do things like labeling people as having “communication issues” with no proof or examples (aka a kafkatrap). They then might also direct you to do something, then let you take the blame and lie stating they never to you and their boss, hence giving more fuel to pushing you out the door.

Having severance protects you from all this, as you are now untouchable by the new manager.

iamNumber4··on Why don’t business leaders consider good coder for management?
Skills can be learned and honed. I have had several managers who have only managed that are terrible managers.

Based on that, the problem is a value add proposition. The really good coders might add more value as really good coders. Transitioning that person to a position of manager, might be negative value as there will be impact as a really good programmer will have to be replaced, and then trained to be a manager.

If you really want to transition to management from any previous role, go get outside training, add degrees or certifications to your resume. Apply for the next management position, or jump ship to a new company hiring in as a manager.

It can also give you some leverage in upcoming reviews after being passed over for management roles for a raise to make compensation on par as if you were doing a manager position. Where as if you are more valuable as a developer you should be compensated for the job you are doing, but don’t want to be doing.

I would also stress to, for anyone regardless of role to also negotiate for a severance package so that your cheaper to keep than to be let go. Start it low at a month or two of salary. Try for it lue of a next raise or a smaller raise plus severance when offered future raises. If you do get a severance package (in writing) make sure each future review you negotiate more months of pay in the severance. Also only accept the severance if it does not specify exit terms, so any exit from the organization you are compensated regardless.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: What was the worst decision you made in your career?
Staying at my first job for far to long. If you’re getting promised x for doing y, and you do y, and don’t get x for some bs reason. Your getting the carrot and stick, dangling the carrot to get you to do something, but yank it away and dangle another bigger carrot. It is time to go look elsewhere for work.

Startups tend to do this more than not, because of lack of funds. Ie you do x will give you y on your next review. Review is rescheduled and rescheduled, etc... when review happens they forget about the deal, and were counting on you forgetting too. Don’t work for people like this.

iamNumber4··on Code Must Be Clean. And Clear
I have worked projects where the most senior developers barely understood cs 101 data structures and lacked good taste in there own code.

Any time they did not understand they would insist comments were added. Then later would sneak back in and rewrite.

Mind you they would shorten variable names, remove pre condition checks on parameters because the thought it was useless code. Remove helper/util methods/functions and refactor from short methods into long ones Etc...

This was all in the sake of clear code. Clear to whom? Not everyone has the same level of skills or can recognize why code is structured the way it is.

I spent more time teaching than I did anything else because the senior and lead devs were senior by title not senior in skills.

My advice, when you run into a piece of code in a review, and it’s not clear to you. Before you knock it down and comment all over it, this is the moment for you and them to learn.

When you ask why are you using switch cases like that or why are you checking parameters passed in for validly or other safety critical patterns, or don’t understand template, or dependency injection, mixins, runtime type inspection. You may not be qualified to even comment.

So again clear to whom?

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: Is running your own code on your servers now “old-school”?
New does not mean improved. Sometimes you have to stick to what works and you know.

The serverless hype, yes hype. Really means you are handing control of you application and it’s infrastructure over to someone else.

There is no reason why you shouldn’t self host. Also keep in mind running in a container on your server is still self hosting.

If you need a a full vm like container then use a vm, if your project can run in a docker container then use docker. However these are considerations for scaling your project not a prequsite how you host or develop your project.

iamNumber4··on Show HN: Script to add last sudo commands to sudoers config.
Somethings are supposed to be painful. If you put to many commands that should have root privileges with no password, you do two things. 1 you load the gun to shoot your self in the foot because you took the safety off. 2 if you forget to lock your session and walk away, anyone can do root things you added to sudo config.

I would suggest if you absolutely need non root users to do things manage it with groups. That is one of the reasons groups exist. Don’t use the sudo group as a dumping ground for random commands as if you need to revoke a users permission you have to edit sudo config to lock certain commands down to specific users. What you need is a group. So then if a user needs permission add them to the group, when you need to revoke permissions remove them from the group.

iamNumber4··on How Much Hotter Is Your Hometown Than When You Were Born?
About 2 degrees cooler. Summers were weeks of 90+, now we get less than 2 weeks in total of 90+ days. Most days are around 85. Winter is now warmer thought were we used to have weeks of snow coverage, now it snows on a Tuesday gone 3 of 4 days later and a lot more ice.

All the new code of conduct introduces the ability of the kafkatrap to be used as a weapon to alienate community members.

A code of conduct should be a bullet point list of offenses and the exact consequences for the violation. With the exact steps for removal or banning a member.

Their should be different levels of rules for different roles in the organization/project. Rules for general everyone, rules that extend to official representives for both private and public capacities. No one is above the rules.

projects should also consider trying to mimic a non profit organization in the terms of job roles. HR exists for a reason. Managers etc... where it applies or makes sense to the project.

Large projects like the Linux kernel should act like a non profit, that hires everyone who wants to join. Helps find them roles or task to do, fires those who break the defined rules.

Less is more, don’t break discrimination laws, no obscenity language at a person ( direct or indirect). F$&k it broke, why didn’t I catch that. Ok. Their shitty code wtf don’t they understand. Not ok. Dave is a dumb a$$hole. Not ok. ( sorry to all Dave’s in the world)

iamNumber4··on Software Engineering Is Bad, but That's Not Why
Well said, I especially like the part about if you don’t like the inherent problems with JavaScript eco system, stop using it.
iamNumber4··on Ask HN: My asshole tech lead steals my ideas
If you’re using tasking/ project management system just create the task with your ideas moving forward, keep track of your task numbers. Whenever the a-hole try’s to steal it, and he makes a task, make sure to update his task as a duplicate of your task.

My other suggestion is keep things close to your vest. If you have the power to implement changes just start doing it. If you don’t, start making branches and developing proof of concepts. Start showing your manager before including the a-hole in the ideas. So that if he try’s to steal it, then your manager has already seen it from you.

Also if he’s doing it to you, your not alone he’s doing it to others too.

Whatever you decide to do, if you can get a trusted coworker to also do it. Then there is a pattern of behavior that can’t be ignored.

My other suggestion is, get your resume in order, start interviewing. Forget the a-holes name the instance you walk out the door.

iamNumber4··on How big will the iPhone get?
Can we just get a iPhone se with upgraded internals please? It’s the perfect sized phone. Don’t need bigger or thinner, just faster, better storage, and more battery life. Also leave the headphone jack too.

Thanks from the folks who are not upgrading their iPhones.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: API to fetch blood work details?
HL7 is the industry standard for medical data.

However you’ll have to write an HL7 interface and then become a HIPAA covered entity under your physicians or be a covered provider to legally receive electronic medical records.

Now if your physician has a Patient health record system or sometime referred to as a patient medical record system PHR/PMR Connected to their electronic health record EHR/EMR system they can release records to the PHR. In which you could create an account in and view your results if the provider does that.

Under HIPAA you are entiled to copies of your medical records with some restrictions, and you can request that from your provider a electronic copy of your record within 48 hours of the request. all EHR systems that are HIPAA complient have to provide this feature. However most cases the records are exclusively sent to a PHR and your account in that system.

Please note you do not own your medical records and things like physicians notes and impressions do not have to be released to you. Other types of records not released typically are psychological records or substance abuse records as that they are mostly subjective observations and impressions style notes and documents.

Are you looking to enter the EHR/PHR market? If so you’re about 15 years late and will have tons of competition in and overly saturated market. Now I’m not saying don’t try, but you’ll have a steep learning curve to climb and tons of laws and regulations you’ll have comply to. As well as tons of other standards like loinc, XDS-b, X11, etc... you’ll have to be experts in to even receive and then decipher the electronic medical records.

Now for the answer to your question; no there are not normally consumer/public API’s available to access lab results for the average off the street developer.

iamNumber4··on Dvorak Keyboard Training
Used this site 5 years ago, switched to Dvorak over a weekend. My typing speed slowed initially below my QWERTY speed of 110 wpm, but last time I tested myself I was pull in a respectable 190 wpm.

Dvorak is more enjoyable for me to type on.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: Who's the Carl Sagan of Comp Sci?
Well, there are a few but they’re either to busy writing code or being a to be a CEO/CTO to be a celebrity spokesperson for the computer science community.

We do have a few already if you want to count Elon Musk, The Woz, and the late Mr. Jobs

There of course is the likes of Linus torvalds, Dennis Ritchie, John Carmack, etc... but they really are just busy doing their thing.

Really I think it boils down to comp sci not yet having a media outlet like the show “cosmos” was for Astro-physics getting the mainstream public’s attention.

We just need a prime time must see tv show, with a charming host.

The problem is Comp Sci isn’t very exciting for those who aren’t already comp scientists.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: How much time can you realistically spend working each day?
I’m in the same boat. I have had to resort to constraining my working hours 6-8 productive hours to find a balance, I have also had to live off a calendar and schedule my downtime vs side projects time. So make sure to set aside quality waking hours on nights and weekends for side projects, be it digital or analog activities. I have also found taking a walk for a short bit of time say 15 or 20 minutes listening to podcasts or audio books is a better decompress than bingeing YouTube/Netflix for a few episodes. Then I have more time after the walk for side projects.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: Anyone running production systems on a dedicated server?
I have many dedicated servers for client production systems. I have found it is cheaper than a virtual private server. I also feel I have more control over the infrastructure. However I do use online backup services like tarsnap for Disaster recovery. I also have dedicated replacement hardware in case of a failure.

Really the answer to your question is: it depends.

Some times a virtual cloud server makes sense, sometimes a on premise server running kubernetes is the answer. I would recommend you look at how you will need to scale in the future and not paint yourself into a corner. If you do on premises correctly migrating to a cloud server is painless and vise versa

iamNumber4··on What are common mistakes made in multithreaded programming?
One mistake I see a lot is leaving debug that causes sleeps to occur during thread execution. So while it may still be faster than a single thread, the sleeps slow things down more than it could be.

I see this debug pattern in a lot of tutorials, but no explanation why they show it, and no guidance when to turn it off.

I have also seen bugs that rely on the sleep for functionality to work correctly and have had to fix logic to turn off the sleep. So it is good practice to test production release mode after initial development in dev release mode.

iamNumber4··on The World’s Oldest Blockchain Has Been Hiding in the New York Times Since 1995
I call bullshit, with being the first block chain. There are examples of depression era script currencies where the individual holding the currency would sign their name on the currency when they spent it, so the current owner knows who owes the amount of the script currency. There are example in the smithsonion from 1933

iamNumber4··on Engineering whiteboard interviews: yay or nay?
Coding challenges either take home or live session.

Most whiteboard questions are always some esoteric algorithm any engineer worth their salt would in real life would look up before ever consider using to verify their own understanding before using it.

Putting someone on the spot saying whiteboard x is not ok.

However if the test is to see if they can take part in a meeting, then by all means do a white board, but ask them draw a workflow diagram or some other 40,000 foot type of diagram. Do not ask them to put code on a whiteboard.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: What do you do when you suddenly feel like not working anymore?
>> Not too much coffee

Or more coffee/caffeine if you have add/adhd. If you can drink a pot of coffee before bed and then go right to sleep, then caffeine might do the opposite to your brain chemistry and level you out. Talk to your doctor, as that you might need something more than caffeine to function. Think of your brain in the aspect of a cpu, where as some cpu’s natural clock speed is a little slower than the average, some are faster and easily distracted. So you might need to adjust something to not burn out a days energy to fast, and feel like the poster does.

Running releases different chemical compounds that affect the brain, so does smoking, eating, drinking caffeine, etc... you could be deficient on vitamins and it could be diet.

Everyone is different, and it will take trial and error until you find a working balance. Which means talking to your doctor about how you are feeling and, also taking the time to self-reflect on how you are actually feeling every day to gauge what’s working and what’s not.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: What do you do when you suddenly feel like not working anymore?
Do something analog. Find something to do that is not with a computer until you get tired of that. Then build a balance chart, draw a circle, draw lines to quarter it, then lines between those. You should see a what looks like a wagon wheel. Each spoke is an aspect of your life. Label each spoke with the 8 important things in your life. This will show you the importance of keeping the spokes “8 things in balance. One spoke could be your job, another your side project, another your family, a hobby, social/friends, downtime, etc... the wheel represents you, giving to much time to a single spoke makes the wheel lopsided and it won’t turn. So as you devote your time to things, imagine which of the 8 is suffering and not getting your time. Try to devote equal time to each.

This is the best way I have found to get things done, and not get burned out/ or saying things like “my give a damn is busted.” It also gives you 7 other things to do when you feel like you do now. Then after you do one of the others see how you feel, go back to the one you didn’t feel like doing or do one of the other things until you feel like it.

iamNumber4··on Ask HN: What can Amazon do to help with the plastic crisis?
As one of the largest retailers, you have the purchasing power to tell manufacturers to use paper, glass, or metal packaging only. Start a foundation, invite every major retailer (especially your biggest competition) to join you and use your combined purchase power to force the manufacturers to go back to the pre blister pack, plactic soda bottle days of ~50 years ago. Force innovation in packaging by saying no to plastic packaged products.
