iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Well done :p gaming AI systems is always great fun ^^
iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Hey there! I'm Regaind's CTO and will be happy to answer your questions :) We built this as a coaching tool aimed at helping amateurs take better photos, in the context of building a smart and flexible automatic roll curation system that goes beyond the "bad exposition/motion blur detection" that's often used. The end goal is to fluidify the use of photos by killing the last bottleneck: sorting.

Fun how it saw the good timing but put such a low score. Keegan is tough with low-light photos overall. Gotta improve that!

What's your browser? (re: back button problem)

iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
The scores range is explained in the modal, 5 is for decent pictures, 7-8 for great ones, 9 for exceptional ones. Your average is really good, and all the scores you got are pretty good as well, congratulations! Keegan definitely makes much worse mistakes than these ^^ Ribbons are one time events that have very different thresholds for happening, if you already got a given ribbon on one picture you won't get it again even if your new picture would be an even better fit for it!

Overall aesthetics is a very subjective subject, and getting perfectly accurate scores for it on the wide variety of photos out there is still an open challenge :)

I think it heavily dislikes the obstruding object at the bottom. Not his tastes :(
iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Thanks! This is exactly the use case :)
iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Everyone has some bad tastes at times, no ? :) But yeah, it's not perfect yet!
iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Actually there's absolutely no face detection in there !
iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Actually it likes some pictures of the famous paintings :) "Simple but it's good" https://keegan.regaind.io/p/z7gQYuFxTTWTK00kHMuaPg
iXce··on Keegan – Personal photo coach
Exactly =) The target is not professional photographers but pretty much everyone else taking pictures everyday with their smartphones. Artsy photos are more often than not wonderful for reasons which are not way too semantic for us for now - situations, etc, and which are way beyond what standard photographers do!

Hey there! Do you have Keegan's URL for the picture on which you got that comment ?
iXce··on How Utah Reduced Chronic Homelessness (2015)
From what I've seen, this feeling might be due to the fact that mentally ill people are overly "visible" because they make way more "disturbance" if I may say.
iXce··on A Design Defect Is Breaking iPhone 6 Pluses
Given the numbers we have and the hypotheses (75M devices sold, 100k defective devices), that would be 0.1% of the total volume sold, which does not sound that small (1 out of 1000 devices, what would we say if it was, e.g. 1 out of 1000 cars of a brand to be defective ? or 1 out of 1000 medical pills ?)

As for the warranty, if it's a design flaw and a widespread issue (and for that, even 0.1% of the whole volume should be significant enough) that pops up after 1 year of usage (because of thermal/physical wear under normal usage conditions), isn't it something that manufacturers should repair even out of warranty ?

iXce··on A Design Defect Is Breaking iPhone 6 Pluses
Even under your hypotheses, I'd say 100,000 faulty devices is already a very significant amount. In terms of retail price, we're looking at more than 60 million USD, and 100,000 customers who were sold a (possibly) flawed device. I'm not sure what perspective should be taken into account, but I'm pretty sure we should not be simply looking at whether the rate of failures is above or below 1% given the volumes involved.

It is!
iXce··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2015)
Regaind | Paris, France | Onsite | Full-Time, Interns | Software Engineer & Researchers https://regaind.io

At Regaind, our goal is to do much more with the 3 billion photos taken every day in the world, instead of leaving them unexploited. For any given usage (share online, print a photobook, sell to a brand), we extract the most appropriate pictures from a given photo gallery, based on their content and on their narrative and aesthetic value. No more procrastinating, no more painful manual sorting: extract all the potential from all your photos, instantaneously!

Regaind is incubated at Agoranov (Luxembourg garden, in the heart of Paris) and has raised its seed round among famous french web entrepreneurs.

If you intend to become an expert in innovative techniques, and if you want to participate in a start-up adventure in a red-hot sector, join us. We have everything to make you learn fast and contribute to building a great product.

We are hiring three tech profiles:

* Full-stack software engineers (Python, Frontend, API)

* 2 computer vision/machine learning engineers/researchers

iXce··on Time-Lapse Mining from Internet Photos
Well that'd be research code anyway :) You'd probably better off rebuilding from scratch based on the research paper. The software shouldn't be that complicated in the end, the main challenge (to me) is gathering that 86M images dataset.
iXce··on Inkscape 0.91 release
When you want to edit the text a bit (so not just to fill forms, but actually edit a PDF/EPS, extract a figure from a paper and rework some text), in 0.48 imported text looked nice initially, but as soon as you start changing a single character the whole text block gets completely wrong (misaligned, writing new characters over the beginning of the text instead of appending...)
iXce··on The French way of cancer treatment
According to [1], the amount of money invested in research in Europe and in the US seems to be of the same magnitude. And it makes sense to me to claim that the "drugs are created in the US" to prove your point. When you have developed a treatment, you can sell it worldwide, thus making profit worldwide to pay for the development/future developments.

Not to mention that France has some very edgy teams working on cancer treatments, such as for leukemia at Hopital Saint Louis in Paris or for various cancers at Hopital Paul Brousse and Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif (for instance they are sort of world leader on chronotherapy of cancers, team of Pr. Francis Levi)

iXce··on Show HN: RinohType – A modern LaTeX in 6500 lines of Python
Well, I think we all expected a "modern LaTeX" based on the title, not something that's much closer to a PDF producer than a LaTeX equivalent. The title is the issue.
iXce··on USB Implementers Forum Says No to Open Source
Heh, most such open source projects don't want to "go commercial", that's the exact point. And I'm not sure how RedHat is exactly "an open source project who went commercial" or rather a commercial company doing open source.
iXce··on Just-released Fedora 19 adds native support for 3D printers
Yeah, not sure why this is getting upvoted. They are just having the standard open source 3D printing apps in the repos, nothing else :s
iXce··on Poll: Do you have a 3d printer?
Yeah \o/ We first build an original Mendel at my Paris (France) hackerspace, then used it to print my own Prusa i1, which I upgraded to an i2 over time using itself, and printed a Prusa i2 for a friend with my i1. RepRap rocks :)

More than a tool, 3D printing is really a big hobby for me. It's not just about getting 3D objects printed, it's also about how the prints go, how the quality varies given the slicing/printing parameters, and how to push everything further with the community.
