iMerNibor··on GPU Hoarding: ‘I Felt Like I Was Buying Drugs’
> has happened with RAM recently as well.

Is happening sadly.. ram prices are still stupid

iMerNibor··on “You're on the verge of losing everything but you don’t understand why”
> I've come to thinking: there's no method which makes the system fairly accessible to all those who need support, which also doesn't allow for some level of exploitation by bad actors.

Basic income for everyone would be one way, but that brings its own set of issues and challenges with it

iMerNibor··on 2018 Is the Last Year of America's Public Domain Drought
Wait, does the copyright not just cover the actual movie/videos/art/... of that time, still having them own the character itself (since they're actively using it)?
iMerNibor··on Documenting the Web together
Seems to be scraping public documentation pages

iMerNibor··on Facebook and Google Helped Anti-Refugee Campaign in Swing States
Of course they'd be allowed to, where would we end up though?

Just from a moral standpoint a huge company, like google and facebook are, should not discriminate who they give advertising space to (in the context of political parties during an election)

iMerNibor··on Facebook and Google Helped Anti-Refugee Campaign in Swing States
I would prefer if facebook/google would not decide which political party is worthy to advertise on their services or not.

Once they start policing that it'll lower the bar for further blocking and we might end up with personal taste playing a role down the line.

iMerNibor··on Facebook and Google Helped Anti-Refugee Campaign in Swing States
> “It’s a tricky issue,” she says, because once the companies decide they’ll do hands-on work for political groups, “it’s hard for them to say we’ll help these groups, but not others.”

Exactly this, if you help one you gotta help all of them unless it's against the law for them do to so (banned parties).

Stop with the stupid policing of "hate speech", this will just lead to anything even remotely questionable getting deleted/flagged (see current youtube ad issues, where basically everything gets demonetized and you have to appeal that to maybe get it back)

> The issue gets thornier when it comes to working with groups on the fringes of the political spectrum.

NO it does not get thornier/worse or anything like that, just let the parties advertise like any other party would be able to. Voters will decide if they want that party to represent them - that's not up to media or other any entity.

Edit: formatting, clarification

iMerNibor··on The trouble with text-only email
It's especially fun if users enter a spam trap email (something along the lines of a@free-email-service.tld) and they blacklist you for sending a opt-in email to that address :]
iMerNibor··on German parliament votes to legalise gay marriage
..and right after voted to pass a law against free speech :) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40444354 (companies will be very careful and delete everything that could potentially not be legal)

Quite a coincidence this happened right after, if you were cynical you might assume they did this on purpose..

iMerNibor··on Ask HN: How would you handle a large traffic spike (eg. being frontpage on HN)?
Caching! Cache responses where possible and have the webserver serve it instead of going to a dynamic backend (php, node, ruby, python, ...).

Not worked with apache for a while (it is probably sufficiently configurable too), but nginx is quite resilient and makes "basic" caching very easy (proxy_cache and fastcgi_cache should cover you)

iMerNibor··on Thunderbird’s Future Home
I assumed they already were since it does offer you to create one in-client (gandi.net for me currently)
iMerNibor··on In the Videogame Industry, Hiring People Is a Last Resort
I don't really see an issue if they got paid in accordance to the hourly work they put in - I mean devs don't get royalities, right?
iMerNibor··on Google Talk Is Being Discontinued
Might have to give it a month or so to settle down aswell and instruct users to mark email as non-spam for automated emails (which helps)
iMerNibor··on Zcoin implementation bug enabled attacker to create over 500K Zcoins
Should compile fine, it'll just evaluate to a goto label named "https" and a comment after
iMerNibor··on Show HN: Evilpass – A slightly evil password strength checker
I've used it for internal (internet exposed due to remote) services before - works in ff, the only issue I've had is remembering them
iMerNibor··on Google to cough up $20m after Chrome infringes anti-malware patents
It's a shame google had to resort to stealing their innovative and detailed way of identifying and dealing with malware. All those countless years of research that must have went into such a complex method should really be rewarded. $20m is way too little for all the effort the poor researchers had to go through

/s

Honestly.. How can this even be a patent? That's like the most generic and simplest thing ever, right? Instead of running it on the real thing, just put it onto a safe processor/sandbox (or scan it before saving it to disk)

iMerNibor··on Over 80% of online ad effect is on offline sales
With just images/text it'll be very hard to track/target people - especially if the image is served from the same website hosting the content (and made to be truly impossible to block). Not to mention ad companies dont seem to care about making it super impossible for ads to be blocked. You basically need to do deals with companies wanting to place ads yourself if you want to get away from the normal ad practices (please do tell me if im wrong) - which is just impossible as a small website
iMerNibor··on Douane personal firewall for GNU/Linux
They do check the string size before using strncpy though, so it should be fine
iMerNibor··on [dead]
It's very weird companies like that don't have an external status page, or anywhere else they update people...
iMerNibor··on Why are browsers so slow?
> modern browsers are so stupid that they reload all the tabs when you restart them.

firefox does not do this.

iMerNibor··on NeuroEvolution – Flappy Bird
took 230 generations for me to do anything then it just went from dying within the first 3 pipes to mastering it within 4 generations
iMerNibor··on “We have been experiencing a catastrophic DDoS attack”
> As for traditional hosting companies (OVH and the likes) When you're being DDoSed, they'll null-route your IP space. (i.e. they advertise your IPs as dont-exist-on-the-internet-anymore). The traffic is dropped while in transit on the internet because it can't go anywhere. It doesn't reach the hosting company anymore.

OVH hasn't been doing this for a while, they got some beefy ddos protection setup for this exact reason - it was way too easy to take down someone for hours

Hetzner (another big european hosting provider) followed recently: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12403783

Online.net also has included protection (+ paid upgrades)

At least here in europe the big hosting providers are all switching to providing included protection for all their customers, at least for traffic intensive attacks which hurt everyone

iMerNibor··on Undebt: How We Refactored 3M Lines of Code
technical debt will not always manifest itself as instability/bad product.

It might just affect development time of things interacting with the bad, old code - or make bugs harder to fix Changes to old nasty code will probably be hacky under the mentality "we're going to refactor this anyways, no point in writing clean code /now/"

Most old code (i've worked with) will function fine - it has for a while after all.

iMerNibor··on The Hyperloop: BUSTED
Issues I can see here as an outsider:

Comparing a giant vacuum chamber with a tube. The pressure on the tube will be spread better since the tube itself is so small. No need for huge thick concrete walls

Expansion: 6000 vacuum seals doesnt sound too bad... Just do regular checks on them

Pipe failures:

You could have airlocks every so often to seperate pipe segments when not in use Double (or even tripple) walled tubes, detect failures and shut down segments and conduct regular tests on segments Use strong enough walls to resist vandalism damage ("What happens if someone shoots a hole into it?") - Thick enough steel walls should probably do it, everything else is just a risk to be accepted (see terrorists on planes or any other thing ever) Not like you have to run the thing on a full vacuum either, partial atmosphere would help immensely too and will minimize the issues

"When it fails and you somehow survive the crash you will be stuck inside a tube with a diminishing air supply"

Again, there could be o2 tanks or filters in place to purify the air in case of an accident. Its not like it is impossible. It wasnt explicitly mentioned but he makes it sound like it is impossible to solve and there's nothing one can do except letting everyone inside the capsule suffocate to death and having them stuck in the tube for eternity

I can very much agree this is way too early to say ANYTHING and media shouldn't be hyping it as a ready made product, but please - its not like there won't be engineers to figure all this stuff out before, there'll be countless security tests and measures in place before taking it live.

It's not like they're trying to steal money off of people like the solar roadway guys either (unless I missed something?)

iMerNibor··on The only way to revoke Spotify API tokens is to delete your account
Actually contacted support on this asking them to revoke all tokens - they responded I'd have to create a new account to remove the facebook integration ...cause that's what I asked for, after another 2 emails back and forth I just gave up
iMerNibor··on OVH: PaaS DB PostgreSQL
I've been using ovh (proper OVH brand) for years and the only issues I've had recently was a service without an SLA which I foolishly used without a failover in a different dc (load balancing ips had an outage for ~5h recently)

Other than that they've been top notch, support is slow, but the non-human things are working as advertised

iMerNibor··on Save Netflix
Think they were talking about "untrusted" as in not reviewed by/available in an "app store"
iMerNibor··on Nxweb – Fast and Lightweight Web Server
I'd imagine encoding/decoding will be really insignificant compared to generating the requested page or fetching data from a database in most, if not all, cases
iMerNibor··on TTIP Enters New and Dangerous Stage as Democracy Is Dismantled in Secret
The guys pushing ttip i guess

They're probably allowed to do it however they please, after all they wrote the document and are free to "license" it however they want

What puzzles me is that TTIP is even in consideration anymore with these measures and all the secret keeping in place. If it truly were that good for us WHY on earth would you take these measures?

iMerNibor··on Mitigating DoS Attacks with Nginx
It /could/, the next step would be a captcha or something harder for bots to solve - haven't had to go that far yet though. But I usually only have to deal with script kiddies who rent out a botnet, enter a url and click the "attack" button
