hw-guy··on Ask HN: Why do some electronics use 6.2 volts DC?
Just a guess...maybe the 5V is supplied from a linear regulator with a maximum dropout of 1.2V, so the board is specified to require at least 6.2V from the wall wart.
hw-guy··on Stanford, Harvard data science no more
It's amazing how many bad ideas, if you scroll down far enough, are justified by an appeal to "equity." Which usually translates into dumbing things down.
hw-guy··on Stanford, Harvard data science no more
"math does lose its usefulness around after trig"

Not if you want to leave open the possibility of majoring in engineering, physical and biological science, or economics.

hw-guy··on DEI Captures the University of Florida
As a centrist Democratic voter, I find it disappointing that only the Republicans seem to be pushing back against these practices. There needs to be bipartisan outrage, so that opposition to coercive programs like this is not seen as a "right wing talking point." Otherwise all Democrats will be tarred as left-wing extremists, with grave consequences for election outcomes.
hw-guy··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
Leftist censors seldom deny that the story is true--often the facts are indisputable. They are just outraged that someone made the facts available beyond the pale of the progressive Magisterium.
hw-guy··on Genetically Modified Trees Have Been Planted in a U.S. Forest
I could just see Earth First burning these forests down to rid them of eeevil GMOs.
hw-guy··on How to make hydrogen straight from seawater – no desalination required
"These electrolysers currently...consume a lot of energy and water – it can take about nine litres to make one kilogram of hydrogen."

OK, I'm an engineer not a chemist, but based on the relative atomic weights of water (18) and H2 (2) isn't that the most you would theoretically expect to get?

hw-guy··on Use 'egg-producing' not 'female', call to phase out binary language
I'm not totally convinced that this isn't satire. It's hard to tell these days.

"Mother" being considered an obscene word was predicted in "Brave New World" in 1932.

hw-guy··on Sea life bounced back fast after the ‘mother of mass extinctions’
Is that all? That makes me feel a lot better about the next climate-related mass extinction.
hw-guy··on Microsoft is permanently killing off Internet Explorer today
I'm sure there are still some government websites that only work with IE.
hw-guy··on New Montana Bill Would Prevent Schools Teaching “Scientific Theories”
The governor, Greg Gianforte, used to be a really smart Bell Labs engineer. Maybe after moving to Montana and getting involved in politics, he decided that he had to dumb himself down to fit in.
hw-guy··on Promote inclusive language on your team with a simple Slackbot (2020)
What a recipe for a dystopian nightmare of a workplace!
hw-guy··on Ask HN: Does “choose not to identify” hurt your chances when applying online?
I was indoctrinated at Very Big Corporation back in the 80's that given a white and a black job applicant, the company's policy was to prefer the black one as long as they meet the minimal requirements for the job. This was presented in annual mandatory Affirmative Action training as offical company policy, and was supposedly a requirement for government contracts.

Never mind that it was a blatant violation not only of the Constitution, but of the letter of the very government policy that initiated Affirmative Action to begin with.

hw-guy··on Tell HN: Sadly, my blog post's title was moderated
In fact, I did skip over the post with the new title; I don't know what LLM stands for and the title did not inspire the curiousity to find out. I would definitely have read "The AI Crowd is Mad."
hw-guy··on Laid off Googler says 'faceless' tech giants see staff as '100% disposable'
It's symbolic. Even though I won't work there any more, at least I'm regarded as a human being in my last minutes in the building. It also gives me a chance to pick up my personal items, say goodbye to my co-workers, and exchange personal emails or phone numbers now that our corporate ones are kaput.
hw-guy··on Laid off Googler says 'faceless' tech giants see staff as '100% disposable'
Every time I've been laid off, by companies large and small, I was at least sat down and given the news in person. Google's method is a new and growing type of nasty.
hw-guy··on What If Diversity Trainings Are Doing More Harm Than Good?
I suspect the trainers don't care, as long as whatever logical or factual errors they are making support the point they want to make, truth be damned. Diversity trainers are also notorious vectors of urban legends: the Chevy Nova story, for example, is presented as fact despite the fact that it has been debunked for years (search for it on Snopes).
hw-guy··on What If Diversity Trainings Are Doing More Harm Than Good?
Well, duh. Having worked at megacorporations where the day-long diversity training was a mandatory annual ritual, my working-level colleagues and I knew this apparently surprising conclusion 40 years ago, no fancy researh needed. We all knew it was window dressing, with a healthy dose of stereotyping, but we could only say that in whispers; and managers couldn't say it at all.

At least we were not subjected to today's faddish and extremely toxic claims that rational thought, hard work and “emphasis on scientific method” are white supremacy. Imagine being a black engineer and being told that the very attributes essential to your job are inherently not part of your culture!

hw-guy··on ChatGPT and GPT-3 for producing content: one notch above useless
I've been very unimpressed with ChatGPT's performance on technical problems. I asked it to solve a problem in heat transfer, and I was initially excited because it gave a detailed answer, explaining how to set up and solve the problem using the Heat Equation, leading to a complicated integral followed by a closed-form expression for the answer.

Problem is--when I actually looked closely at the results, they were wrong: filling in the known initial and boundary conditions gave nonsense, unphysical answers. I then asked it to solve a couple of ordinary differential equations, and both answers were wrong.

hw-guy··on Netflix buys former Army base to create $850M production studio in New Jersey
It's not the whole base, but a large parcel of it. Other sections have already been developed for housing and retail businesses. A reporter for the Asbury Park Press ought to have known this.
hw-guy··on Elements of Dance Etiquette (2005)
I think the commenter is talking not about etiquette, but about how to live a richer life.
hw-guy··on New Yelp policy means you lose all your reviews when you move [video]
This may or may not be interesting...buy why do I have to spend 20 minutes watching a video to find out, when the same information could be conveyed in a written format that I could read in 5 minutes, or better yet, scan in 1 minute to get to the punch line or decide if it's worth reading in detail?

This is a general complaint that I have. Why is so much information now presented in video format rather than writing?

hw-guy··on A circuit simulator that doesn't look like it was made in 2003
This one looks like it was made for children.
hw-guy··on Ask HN: How to not be jealous of other people despite being a failure
Have you discussed with your psychologist that you might have ADHD? It often appears alongside anxiety. Maybe you can have therapy targeted for these conditions, including possible medication. Maybe it's time to looks for a new psychologist or psychiatrist to give a fresh view of things. Good luck! It's by no means too late to turn things around.
hw-guy··on Stem Diversity May Lie in Peer Mentorship
I grew up in the Deep South in the waning days of school segregation. One of the claims made in support of segregation was that white students learn best from white teachers, and black students learn best from black teachers. This work is an echo of that philosophy.
hw-guy··on Ask HN: What software are you thankful for?
Arduino IDE. Eagle (Free PCB Layout tool). LTSpice.
hw-guy··on Netherlands to close up to 3k farms to comply with EU rules
I suspected that's what the article intended, but it read as somewhat scientifically illiterate as it referred to "nitrogen" (N2) when they were really thinking nitrogen compounds.
hw-guy··on Britney Spears' Guide to Semiconductor Physics
This amusing site has been around for at least 20 years. It's nice to see it's still there.
hw-guy··on Netherlands to close up to 3k farms to comply with EU rules
Well, the article just says nitrogen.
hw-guy··on Netherlands to close up to 3k farms to comply with EU rules
WTF? The atmosphere is over 70% nitrogen. I find it hard to fathom that emissions from all the farms in the Netherlands could upset that balance in any measurable way.
