hvmonk··on Making Humans a Multiplanetary Species [video]
+1. Very correct view, but just a wrong thread/forum. Don't worry about the down votes.

Yoga is a Sanskrit word, which means union. It is much broader and deeper than doing physical asanas. The asanas is just the tip of iceberg :) As you said, when you practice the asanas, your body and breath becomes more controlled. The next level is you control your thoughts - and not vice versa -> union of body, breath and mind. As you become more serene, your meditation starts getting deeper -> union of mind, body, breath and self.

I came across this video recently, where three "genuine" yoga teachers are asking questions about yoga and meditation. The format is initial 10-12 minutes, the yoga teachers talk about their experiences, and then in rest of the video, they ask questions to Sri Sri Ravishankar about deepening mediation with yoga: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7HEmsY29EU

hvmonk··on The Apple Goes Mushy Part I: OS X's Interface Decline
Re: safari hiding urls, click on Preference->Advanced-> And, check the box for "Smart Search Field" to see the complete url. It should be checked by default and I found it annoying too.
hvmonk··on India launches 20 satellites in single mission
Yeah, a totally irrelevant comment.
hvmonk··on How Great Programmers Avoid Bugs
So, does that demean it? A thought is just a seed, and the onus of growing/nurturing it is on the thinker.
hvmonk··on Twitter open-sources a high-performance replicated log service
I wish they had kept some of the commit history - would be tough to parse the project without it.
hvmonk··on Should Prostitution Be a Crime?
This is one of the oldest "profession" on this planet. IMO, it is still active today is a sufficient proof that it serve some folks well (on both sides), and shouldn't be labelled as crime or illegal. Sure, there are irregularities in this trade, but don't they exist in other professions as well? Underpaid waiters, underpaid workers, etc. Similarly it has its own poisonous weeds - pimps, trafficking, etc. That needs to be eradicated, not the industry per se.
hvmonk··on U.S. Apartment Market Shows Signs of Losing Steam
Come Fall and the rent would increase again due to incoming students in Cal. Have seen that in Berkeley a lot.
hvmonk··on Congratulations You’ve Been Fired
And, being the top thread, he is doing a good job in getting the PR ship :)
hvmonk··on Squash your commits
This is such a nice feature. Thank you for working on it. Keeping history clean is important, especially in enterprise solution where you have to keep support multiple releases. You want to select certain commits/features in one version. With merge/squash, you would get a cleaner history, and it is easy to pick commits you want.
hvmonk··on The birth of Baghdad was a landmark for world civilisation
Agree. And also, don't forget no WMD was ever found in Iraq. What a mess that whole region is in now.
hvmonk··on The birth of Baghdad was a landmark for world civilisation
First, we destroy a place/city/habitat, and then after completely ruining beyond any hope of recovering, make a museum or write a posthumous article about it.
hvmonk··on In Colorado, a look at life after marijuana legalization
Sorry if I was not clear but my point was once you removed the label.
hvmonk··on In Colorado, a look at life after marijuana legalization
I've never been to Colorado so could be wrong. But this article makes me worry, especially for the kids. And, that you can't distinguish b/w a regular candy and one with marijuana in it. And, the concern that as time passes and this industry becomes big, and gain enough political muscle, favorable regulations would be made. All valid concerns.
hvmonk··on Without affordable housing, Vancouver risks becoming an economic ghost town
oligarchy at micro level, creating obstacle in path of hard working common people. Prop 13 was created by these very elderly people only, and they are now reaping its benefits while the new generation suffers. Not saying all old people are like that, but this is what it is.
hvmonk··on Without affordable housing, Vancouver risks becoming an economic ghost town
Yeah, investors are all around in Bay area too. They are making the real estate market crazy. I have witnessed more than 15 offers on ordinary properties in South Bay, and well, they are selling far more than the listed price. All these investors pay all-cash, money gifted from other side of the globe. It doesn't matter where you work, how much is your salary - you can't beat these investors.
hvmonk··on We're ditching the office completely
ditto. I worked remotely for 10 months and don't plan to do it again. There is no substitute of the good feeling of hanging out together with team mates at same place.
hvmonk··on San Francisco's Fog Over Growth
Can't agree more. The laws made in late 70s were made to benefit a specific class of people, and they are most vocal against any change which is aimed to bring equality.
hvmonk··on Moving away from HDF5
ditto. :)
hvmonk··on My adventures in medical tourism
My understanding is doctors in US are trained to scare you about every possible negative outcomes. I find visiting a doctor here is much much more stressful than doing it in India.

For a simple chest pain, doctors here would tell you 145566 possible scenarios that may happen with your body, and wouldn't confirm any unless he sees a lab test. And then, a tide of lab tests would start, which will cripple you financially, and emotionally because all you are thinking is which test would be +ve, which -ve; diving on internet where people usually blog about their -ve experiences. Usually, it could be just a muscular pain, etc, which become so irrelevant as you are undergoing all these lab exams.

I don't want to blame the doctors here as such, because that's how they are trained here. I guess it boils down to this robust "suing infrastructure" here, that if you missed out a rare symptom with a patient, he will sue you and finish your career.

One thing which I couldn't understand is why in a developed country, lab tests are so expensive. An Xray, costs about $100; similar thing costs about Rs 80 (equivalent to $1.25). Shouldn't they be cheaper here, given there are gizmos for everything, and all electronics items are much cheaper here than India. I think these costs are all artificial.

I think a mix of both approaches (insurance + free market) would better.

hvmonk··on How do Promises Work?
I have seen how Promises' concept was abused in a project at work. All the promises were just returning Future objects, and they were exposed everywhere. And, in case a future fails for some reason, there was no way to have a new Future: all users were doing future.get, resulting in an exception thrown to the caller. What a mess.
hvmonk··on Tapeworms can transmit cancer cells to humans
Sorry, NOT RELATED TO THIS POST: I wonder how some articles got to the first page even when they have 0 to very few points... this post has 8 points so far and I see posts which have > 100 points still on the second page. Is it page views?
