hurtuvac78··on Social media can be a ‘profound risk’ to youth, surgeon general warns
It is just a matter of time before we admit that the profound risk is not specific "to youth", but to everybody.

Adults are just as addicted, with pretty much the same consequences.

hurtuvac78··on Success to the successful
A lot of people find moral value in a meritocracy. This "success to the successful" shows the limits.

A lot of people would agree that if someone is 5x smarter and work 5x more than someone else, then making 25x more money could be fair.

My intuitive take is that our system rewards those people with a lot more than x25... this article seems to go in the same direction.

If that is true, is it morally fair? What would be fair? Do we even care about fairness?

hurtuvac78··on Electronic Music and the NeXTcube – Running Max on the Ircam Musical Workstation
About IRCAM, I remember experiencing a spatial audio demo there, almost 30 years ago.

Put their headphones on. The sound seems to come from one side. Turn your head towards it. The sound comes straight in front of you. Intuitive and neat. In all VR headsets nowadays... Very cool place.

hurtuvac78··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
Apple being motivated by improving security are BS, and it pains me te see people in this forum falling for it or reapeating this.

There is a great tool to increase security: the browser and its sandbox. You don't need to install anything fishy on your phone, and the sandbox rights coukd be sufficient for many apps.

But as an example, Apple denies the full screen feature for websites and even PWA... only installed ones. There's no good reason except favoring apps/appstore. For security? Works great on Android.

And you cannot use a third party browser, since they forbid that (all are Safari based)

Thank you, EU!!

hurtuvac78··on Womp 3D – The New Way to 3D
Yes, but it is frustrating to limit yourselves and your users because Safari or Firefox does not support some Canvas features, some voice recognition ones, bluetooth or localhost interactions for example.

I really don't like the idea and the practice of helping a Google monopoly, and I am guilty of it at times. But on the other hand, using such features is a way to encourage Apple to upgrade their browser... which they have little incentive because they want apps.

hurtuvac78··on Single Board Computers Benchmarks
I'd like to know how fast the networking is of such boards. As in: read a file and distribute it over ethernet or wireless, in MB/s.

What's the next best indicator? Clock speed? CPU?

hurtuvac78··on An Interview with Jerry Seinfeld (2017)
"double-dipping" too
hurtuvac78··on Twitter blocked our indie game account
I created a Twitter account for à new company. My main goal was to lock the handle, and I did not do anything with it initially.

Two weeks later my account got suspended, because I supposedly broke some rules. But I did not tweet anything nor followed anyone. I appealed a few times, no responses.

4 months later my account was unblocked. No idea why.

This is ridiculous they can get away with arbitrary rules and no due process.
