hurryer··on Don't waste money on a math coprocessor they said
Pentium was the first CPU which could run two integer operations per cycle.
hurryer··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
In modern math all numbers are built on set theory which has the empty set as it's foundation.

Empty set is more like 0 than 1. Check mate Unitarians.

hurryer··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
17 is well known as the most random number between 1 and 20.
hurryer··on GPU Survival Toolkit for the AI age
GPU also has 10x memory latency compared to CPU.

And memory access order is much more important that on CPU. Truly random access has very bad performance.

hurryer··on Matplotlib
Bokeh has a much more sensible API, and it generates an interactive HTML plot by default.

Unfortunately it's missing quite a few specialized plots from matplotlib, in particular the popular histogram plot is strangely difficult to draw.

hurryer··on Horrible edge cases to consider when dealing with music (2022)
You're overthinking it.

But anyway, firefox has an option to delete history, cache, cookies. Settings/Delete browsing data.

If you are really paranoid, go to the firefox app page, storage, click clear cache, clear data (will reset to default)

hurryer··on Is this radical redesign of GIMP possible now?
I'm curious how you use gimp. Do you use mathy/programming/terminal kinds of editing - stuff applied over the whole image with little mouse usage and mostly setting dialog parameters.

Or do you do little edits with the mouse, painting masks, selecting regions with the mouse, and generally using the mouse/pen a lot?

hurryer··on Apple has a memory problem and we're all paying for it
Luxury status items are not priced on BOM. That's the whole point, showing that you don't care paying way beyond actual costs.

It would be a strategic signaling mistake for Apple to sell RAM upgrades at actual cost, it would decrease their luxury brand value.

If you don't mind signaling poor and want to pay just actual costs buy a PC.

> We now know, through the theorems of Kirt Gödel, that there is no definitive way to classify mathematics

Is this true?

hurryer··on SciPy builds for Python 3.12 on Windows are a minor miracle
Let's try the same argument, the other way around: it's sad that Linux developers waste time developing the Linux desktop given that almost all usage of Linux is on the server. Linux developers should dedicate manpower to porting Linux desktop software to Windows/Mac which the vast majority of desktop users use. Now you see the problem with your argument?
hurryer··on SciPy builds for Python 3.12 on Windows are a minor miracle
There is the array module, but it's cumbersome to use.

https://docs.python.org/3/library/array.html

But unlikely this is what parent meant.

hurryer··on SciPy builds for Python 3.12 on Windows are a minor miracle
For pure CPU computation Windows is just as fast as Linux since 99.9% of the time it's your code running and not the OS.
hurryer··on SciPy builds for Python 3.12 on Windows are a minor miracle

  int *x;
  int *y;
  // ...
  *x = 5;
Because of aliasing, x and y might point to the same memory location, so the compiler must assume that when you modified x to 5, y also potentially got modifed, so at next access it will read y again from memory and discard any cached value in a register it might have.

The compiler will try proving that no such aliasing is present, by tracking your pointer usage, but it's not always possible, in those cases it will assume the worse and re-read values from memory.

hurryer··on SciPy builds for Python 3.12 on Windows are a minor miracle
That's like asking way don't mac developers work in a linux vm instead of wanting a native build.

Because working in a VM is inconvenient and has poor integration.

hurryer··on Device keeps brain alive, functioning separate from body
Your atoms are being replaced all the time, at some point none of your original atoms are still present, yet somehow you feel no discontinuity.
hurryer··on What the QWAC? an EV Certificate all over again
> That means that if you're Apple or Google, you can spin off a company that has no presence in the EU and ship whatever root certificates you want, and it's not like you lose out on revenue.

If such a solution would work Microsoft would have done it in it's famous browser monopoly suit

hurryer··on What the QWAC? an EV Certificate all over again
> The EU absolutely has an interest in preventing a US (or Chinese or whatever) entity from falsely certifying an EU site.

EU is varied with all kinds of interests and geopolitical orientations.

For example Hungary. Should we let Hungary certify an EU site?

hurryer··on Device keeps brain alive, functioning separate from body
What's wrong with uploading to a robot body.
hurryer··on CPU-Z's Inadequate Benchmark
5 years? More like 20 years. SSE2 is supported by all 64-bit Intel/AMD CPUs released since about 2005.
hurryer··on Audacity 3.4
As a dynamic microphone, SM57 is only usable in the studio for certain kinds of vocals/instruments - the loud ones.

You wouldn't want to record an acoustic guitar ballad on it.

hurryer··on Google Abandons Web Environment Integrity API
In was speaking in general about remote attestation, not about the Chrome only one.

A good example is Xbox, for which there is no known custom software, which in turn guarantees the lack of cheating software.

hurryer··on Audacity 3.4
Good professional audio hardware is not overpriced. Sure, there are $15k microphones but you absolutely do not need those, a $1k one is top quality and not expensive if you use it regularly.

You are confusing it with audiophile gear.

Regarding Audacity, it's missing tons of features and it's UI is bad. Just like Gimp vs Photoshop. I did some audio production and Audacity is just not usable beyond the most basic operations, and even those are a bit of pain.

hurryer··on Google Abandons Web Environment Integrity API
It could ensure that an employee laptop is not infected when connecting to the intranet which could prevent customer data leakage which would be a benefit for all of us.
hurryer··on Samsung and other manufacturers disable phones bought on gray markets
Why would Samsung have just one distributor in Mexico with very high prices? This doesn't make sense.

In EU you can buy from a variety of sellers at various prices. You can buy grey market too and Samsung doesn't disable those phones.

So what is special about Mexico?

hurryer··on Nvidia to Challenge Intel with Arm-Based Processors for PCs
Windows is most valuable because of all the software for it.

They need some sort of emulation.

hurryer··on Samsung and other manufacturers disable phones bought on gray markets
Article says that multiple phone makers do this in Mexico. I haven't heard about this practice in other countries.

Could it be that there is a particularly dumb law in Mexico which makes companies do this?
