Hi my name is Ruslan.

I am working day job at Verda Cloud as member of technical staff and I am building DollarDeploy (control plane for your own servers, aka Vercel for your VPS), before that I was building Valosan (Press relations CRM and PR platform for startups)

Startup founder, AI, full-stack & product engineer, software architect.

One nitpick is Claude Code on the web does not do linting by default, so you need to run lint for its changes manually.
huksley··on Scaling PostgreSQL to power 800M ChatGPT users
"... If a new feature requires additional tables, they must be in alternative sharded systems such as Azure CosmosDB rather than PostgreSQL...."

So it is not really scaling too much now, rather maintaining current state of things and new features go to a different DB?

huksley··on Google de-indexed Bear Blog and I don't know why
I have the same issue with DollarDeploy and Bing (and consequently with DuckDuckGo which uses bing)

Primary domain cannot be found via search - Bing knows about brand, LinkedIn, YouTube channel and but refuses to show search results about primary domain.

Bing search console does not give any clue, force reindexing does not help. Google search works fine.

huksley··on One year with Next.js App Router and why we're moving on
App router is an overengineered mess. "These rules are too hard for normal developers to understand."

Just use pages router, it is still supported and works, also static generation for SEO also works.

huksley··on Why Self-Host?
Unfortunately, it is not realistic to have all the apps we frequently use as self-hosted. Mail, Instagram, etc, come to mind, all social apps.

I wish I could have a way to live sync between a cloud service and my own infrastructure, not only as a backup, and as a way to query that data.

huksley··on Beginner Guide to VPS Hetzner and Coolify
Good start, but there are many, many things that should be improved if you are running this as a production setup.

Including node & PM2 update to the latest, running PM2 as a systemd service, or simply ditching PM2 altogether, as well as backups, performance settings, and monitoring, log rotation, and cleanup, etc.

Beware of using the same server for running the apps and for building the app. Quite often, building the app needs a lot of RAM and CPU, so it is undesirable to do it on the same host.

huksley··on Use singular nouns for database table names
user is a resevered word in Postgres so it will be actually

> select * from "user"

which is ugly

huksley··on Making a font of my handwriting

huksley··on Next.js is infuriating
I have enterWith working perfectly with async/sync flow - all operations between request and response are logged with request id transparently. I am using custom server for both standalone build & dev server, nextjs 14, node 22.
huksley··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
Shadowsocks over websockets is the way to have traffic indistinguishable from browser traffic. A bit difficult to configure manually: https://developers.google.com/outline/docs/guides/service-pr...
huksley··on Altered states of consciousness induced by breathwork accompanied by music
I should mention Non-Sleep-Deep-Rest (NSDR), which, while not changing a state of consciousness, helps in relaxation and focus. Only in 20 mins. Based on my one single anecdata point.
huksley··on We put a coding agent in a while loop
Generated by AI libraries will by definition have all the security bugs you might encounter in the open, since it trains on them.

I would say, it is better maintain your own AI improved forks of the libraries and I am hoping that pattern will be more common and will also benefit upstream libraries as well.

huksley··on AWS deleted my 10-year account and all data without warning
If you are given only 5 days to comply with some request, that's how complicated your infra at AWS should be - so you can migrate to another provider in that time.

Just use EC2 and basic primitives which are easy to migrate (ie S3, SES)

huksley··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
Menu is unclickable and Firefox shows "this page is slowing down firefox"
huksley··on Self-host is just waiting for its iPhone moment
shameless DollarDeploy plug: this is that we want to achieve. So you can self-host pretty much any open source software (self-sovereignity) and also your own apps.

and with AI, we just make it simple to do, no need to install docker, anything, it will automatically configure host.

and btw, for your own apps, we don't need docker - Linux is advanced as it is, you can just run apps locally.

next step is portability, so you can move your apps from server to server as needed.

huksley··on CSS's problems are Tailwind's problems
Tailwind is great for layouts. For configurable components, not sure. I also dislike the mess with colors.

Cursor IDE uses those navy-100, red-100 absolute colors, instead of using text-destructive, etc (for light/dark mode support), and it is also difficult to tell it does otherwise. So I need to fix this manually, and it is quite time-consuming.

huksley··on Things I learned from 5 years at Vercel
NextJS now is unecessary complex, and there are things to avoid to make sure everything works fine.

I am not sure why it is so slow for you, maybe you you can try run this boilerplate (work in progress to make it easy to use)

https://github.com/wizecore/boilerplate-saas/

It uses Pages router, comes with local postgres, redis and AWS sqs emulator. No docker, no cloud needed for it to work locally.

Such setup is crazy fast on my mbp m2 pro.

huksley··on Things I learned from 5 years at Vercel
Leerob, thank you for your patience and help on Reddit community! The NextJS gets a lot of criticism these days but you helped a lot of people, with self-hosting NextJs and other tricky questions.
huksley··on Basically Everyone Should Be Avoiding Docker
So it is not about Docker and its licensing but about containerization its added complexity.

I agree, for a lot of things we don't need containers, and running apps natively is so easy on modern Linux distributions

huksley··on Why I Use a Dumbphone in 2025 (and Why You Should Too)
But how I will post to reels and stories how great my life is
huksley··on Why I Use a Dumbphone in 2025 (and Why You Should Too)
Social media apps can have notifications turned off, so you check them when you voluntarily go and open them.

Unfortunately for email the problem still persists, tons of newsletters and updates and other not so important emails and really urgent ones get drowned in that.

What I typically do is I snooze everything for 2 hours and have a productive session without interruption.

huksley··on How to post when no one is reading
The journey of building in public can be tough when starting out! DollarDeploy went through similar early stages. One thing that helped us was focusing on delivering real value for developers - making deployment simple and cost-effective. Happy to share our experience growing the community if you're interested!
huksley··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
I am implementing native support for deploying Python apps in DollarDeploy.

DollarDeploy is like Coolify and dokploy but with better UI, no docker containers and fast deploys for full stack apps, NextJS, react

huksley··on Claude 4 System Card
> ...told something in the system prompt like “take initiative,” it will frequently take very bold action. This includes locking users out of systems that it has access to or bulk-emailing media and law-enforcement figures to surface evidence of wrongdoing.

So if you ask it to aid in wrongdoing, it might behave that way, but who guarantees it will not hallucinate and do the same when you ask for something innocuous?

Cursor IDE runs all the commands AI asks for with the same privilege as you have.

huksley··on Self-Hosting Moose with Docker Compose, Redis, Temporal, Redpanda and ClickHouse
You don't publish a ready-made image anywhere? That would be easier to spin it up without installing locally moose first. Kind of defeats the purpose of Docker Compose recipe.

And those ports bindings, is it really necessary to expose it on 0.0.0.0 by default.

huksley··on Ask HN: What's the best way to deploy container-based apps for a small project?
My experience:

- Dokku - too much shell scripting and you forget all the commands you typed after 1 year.

- Dokploy - you need to install it on your host. So it makes it difficult to switch to a bigger host.

So now I am actively developing a new platform which solves all this - DollarDeploy.

It makes it easy to deploy app from GitHub repo to the server of your choice, and automatically generate HTTPs cert, manage hosts, backups etc for $1/app/month.

Would be nice if you give it a try and provide feedback!
