hughesjj··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Innocence and morality isn't restricted to the determinations or domain of the legal system.
hughesjj··on Debian opens a can of username worms
I remember in school learning that technically speaking on Unix you could have the backspace character as part of your password too

But for the same reason with ^W and ^U I have no idea how you'd implement that in an interactive prompt without escaping

hughesjj··on Show HN: Open-source private home security camera system (end-to-end encryption)
Oh wire guard is a requirement imo, regardless of NVR or camera vendor. I'm less worried about a nation on the other side of the Pacific getting a livestream of my property than I am someone social engineering some rando employee at Ring/whereever and figuring out the best time to rob me or whatever.

Also set up alerts on shodan opencve etc. If you have anything but a phone and personal computer on your home network, assume they're hacked and treat it like you would coffee shop wifi during defcon.

Because... Well they are. Zero days are a thing, and by definition by the time you learn of one it's too late.

Honestly I'm more concerned about the compromised device being an attack vector for network sniffing etc moreso than the video itself... Which is yet another reason why I try to 100% VPN even at home, but man okta doesn't play well with VPNs.

Man, I'm old enough to remember when 512 was a thing for consumer cards back when we had 4-8gb memory

Sure that was only gddr5 and not gddr6 or lpddr5, but I would have bet we'd be up to 512bit again 10 years down the line..

(I mean supposedly hbm3 has done 1024-2048bit busses but that seems more research or super high end cards, not consumer)

hughesjj··on Ask HN: Why did no one save the Living Computers museum in Seattle?
Yeah, I blame his sister. I don't know what happened behind closed doors (if anything) but I'm also disappointed neither gates nor balmer seemed to pick up the pieces either, or even Bezos given his presence in SLU

Hikvision and reolink are highly rated onvif ones that support poe, but as long as the camera support ONVIF from there just compare as normal

I definitely preferred it to Facebook, even before the feed became 100% inflammatory political stuff or ads and 0% my friends

It reminds me of google plus. Technically better than the existing top dog, but the forced migration and trying to bootstrap with a huge but only semi involved userbase let it fizzle soon after the start.

Has there ever been a successful case of bootstrapping a new social media product with an existing userbase? Like not just added features or merging two together.

You could always just bootstrap a nuclear program in Ukraine instead.

They gave up their nukes in exchange for protection from Russia and the US. Both countries have failed to keep up their end of the bargain, so it's sensible for Ukraine to get back what they gave up.

hughesjj··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
Yup. Also a bit more latency since it's effectively restreaming unless it's someone at the actual event.
hughesjj··on Netflix buffering issues: Boxing fans complain about Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson
Yeah didn't they crash on love is blind or one of their reality shows recently-ish?

... Yeah but they didn't do that before they were in power. They abused misinformation to get to a position to then lock it down. That's indeed what I'm saying.n I'm not disagreeing that they lock it down once in power.

I never used Twitter but I left Facebook for exactly that reason. I just want to keep up with my friends. I don't want to constantly see whatever narrative some corporate media entity is pushing.

Depends what you mean in regards to rewriting. If there's a position that runs counter to our current scientific consensus, I think it should be updated to reflect the current consensus, but when I was reading my history/physics books they would cover what people believed at a particular time period. I don't see any issue with that. We're always learning more about the world around us. We are not an omniscient species.

Unless there's a more specific example you can think of w.r.t rewriting.

I'm looking back with how much teenage edgelord/ironic/sarcastic speech that was rampant in my youth covered for people who actually held horrible views like white nationalism. I thought it was all just shock humor. I know better now, but I'm worried about that persisting in kids. I think it's always been that way. I don't know how to mitigate it.
hughesjj··on The Onion buys Infowars
Tyrany is orthogonal to free speech. You can absolutely abuse free speech to enact tyranny -- hell just look at Weimar era Germany.

Absolutist free speech would allow you to publicly plot the assassination of whomever you wanted to, or permit insider trading, etc.

Speech is a tool. It's utility and morality depends on the weilder of it.

For real, 80% is effectively coin flip territory for me. I wouldn't put any important bets on 80%, for the same reason I don't play Russian roulette.

The polling was pretty darn close though, overall. Same as in 2016. The thing is, there's enough polls out there that people can pick the outliers and decide themselves into a narrative that makes them feel good.

It's an incredibly small number of voters in the key swing states that actually decide the election. It's under 1% of the voters to swing the election. Winner take all + electoral college will give you that.

I want to switch to podman. What are the general gotchas and difficulties you could see in doing that for multi architecture+os builds/deployments?

Nah, I've seen conservatives make similar statements when referencing Democrats before.

I've also done the same when referencing Democrats I disagree with politically, like the governer of WA I just voted for.

I think it's healthy to collaborate with or place trust in people you don't agree with in. In this case, we're talking about UAPs, which historically are associated with a lot of non-credible stories (imo) similar to Bigfoot chasers or Nessie believers. At this moment in politics, there's a lot of extremism and conspiratorial thinking with some of our elected leaders. One of our congresswomen literally claimed Jewish space lasers were influencing the weather. Some people apply heuristics when evaluating political viewpoints (I get it, there's a lot going on in the world and life is busy), so I wanted to call out in this case that the heuristic of "domain often associated with quacks" + "party which contains some prominent quacks" doesn't seem to match this situation or person.

Also, I'm an IC. I'm not worried about getting "cancelled" for any of my viewpoints. I'm a nobody, no one cares. You have to say some incredibly incensing stuff to get fired at my level just for expressing a belief outside of the workplace, unless the company sucks, in which case I'd be happy to leave anyway.

While I disagree with her on many things politically, Mace seems like a credible person to me.

Here's hoping that, if these things really do exist and isn't just a Honeypot or misinfo or whatever, they're there to keep us from being the idiots we are and all offing ourselves. Especially relevant when looking at "sundial" which was posted recently on HN

hughesjj··on Show HN: Proxmox VE Helper Scripts
At the risk of leaking info to any toes I step on w.r.t my home environment,

- home assistant - Network Video Recorder - Jellyfin - network management such as ubiquiti or omada etc - vault warden/1pass/other secrets servers - tailscale or wire guard server - build server/k8s test environment - private artifactory or mirror (especially useful if you're using the same distro on a bunch of devices but don't want to overload the actual mirror+improves download times) - torrents (someone's gotta seed Wikipedia) - onsite backups - bastion into your home network (see also: wire guard) - some people even use it for their router

You could also take a look at the tteck scripts, there's a bunch of cool stuff in there
