huangc10··on Things learned from Anthony Levandowski's deposition in Waymo vs. Uber
Great analysis and generally a good read.

However, to simplify, I think the biggest lesson learned is:

When you create a product at a company and use the company's resources, the IP belongs to the company. If you're going branch out and work on a related product, you better understand the legal issues first.

Also, stealing is bad.

huangc10··on On Chinese Writing: Evolution
I'm not sure where the author is from (although it looks like he studied in Paris).

Taipeh is the German spelling of Taipei as far as I can tell.

huangc10··on Why Juicero’s Press Is So Expensive
> the massive force required to press the packs across the entire surface at once. The machine must apply equal pressure to ~64 square inches of surface area at once, meaning the drivetrain must be able to apply thousands of pounds of force to squish all that produce.

What if the package was a cube (16 square inches for ex. with 4 inch height) This would roughly fit in the average human palm. Wouldn't we be able to easily more or less apply equal pressure on the packaging? Just a thought.

I would consider buying these cube packs.

huangc10··on How I learned React Native in a weekend and shipped an app
thanks! this is really good news. I'm sort of in the same shoes as you. I work as an iOS developer and I wrote React for fun on the side.

Knowing how easy to is to ship to Android Studio is an added benefit.

huangc10··on How I learned React Native in a weekend and shipped an app
You mentioned you previously shipped iOS apps. How was the Android integration with React Native?

Is it easy for someone unfamiliar with Android dev environment to push to Play Store?

huangc10··on Square Said to Acquire Team from Struggling Social App Yik Yak
> The payments processor paid less than $3 million for between five and ten of Yik Yak’s engineers, according to the person.

Classic acquihire scenario?

huangc10··on Kitty Hawk
From the FAQ:

> How much will the vehicle cost? We will disclose the price when we launch the product later this year.

What does HN think the price will be? If the $100 membership comes with a $2000 discount...say arnd 10%? So looking arnd $20-30k?

huangc10··on On Chinese Writing: Evolution
I think you misspelled Taipei in paragraph 2. "National Palace Museum in Taipeh".

Or is it Taipeh in other languages? Though the blog is in English...

huangc10··on NASA Image Shows Earth Between the Rings of Saturn
Anyone else recently read that there may be the possibility of life on Saturn's moon Enceladus within it's hydrothermal vents?
huangc10··on LinkedIn’s new UI proves it doesn’t know it’s value to users
Not much of a LinkedIn user but I've noticed that they are trying to hide the slow load times with placeholders. Let's just say it's noticeably slow.
huangc10··on Canada is North America’s up-and-coming startup center
"Shitty" is subjective. The fact is, the Pineapple Express brings warmer, tropical-esque temperatures. I grew up in Vancouver and didn't move away till I was 18. I've always thought the rainy weather was nice and didn't think too much about it. That's just me...haha :D
huangc10··on Canada is North America’s up-and-coming startup center
Most people have it mixed up. They're usually referring to the Coast Mountains/Cascade Range which is located directly east of Vancouver (can be seen on a clear day).

The actual Rocky Mountains are much more east at the BC/AB border.

*edit, added Coast Mountains

huangc10··on Canada is North America’s up-and-coming startup center
Actually, the weather in Vancouver and Seattle are not bad as they have the Pineapple Express. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pineapple_Express
huangc10··on Canada is North America’s up-and-coming startup center
I just want to give my POV on all of this as I have lived in both Vancouver, Toronto, and now in Mountain View.

Everything pointed out in the comments about low pay, and high cost of living in Vancouver is true. However, let's look of it from another angle. If you were a young college grad with options, wouldn't you want to go to sunny California? Not only is it an adventure, there's better night life, better sports teams, the glory of the valley, and on top of that, higher pay. It's really a no brainer for some.

Toronto is definitely a better environment and I can see it blossoming more and more. I know a couple of Founders there and they love it. I would go there myself in the future, except for family ties in the west coast.

Just my 2 cents.

huangc10··on Why 1866 Set the Stage for Two World Wars
What's interesting to me here is that, it seems like a lot of the causes/triggers to WWI/WWII were due to conflicts between nations and/or assassinations. We don't necessarily have anything as big as 2 equal nations fighting, capitals getting invaded etc.

So does that mean WWIII will probably never happen given that we don't have any of of these crazy causes/triggers?

huangc10··on 25 is ‘golden age’ for the ability to make random choices
Do you mind sharing why you did it and what you're up to now in Asia?

Mainly mine was, my true passions was in SW and I felt that I couldn't make a big enough impact through HW.

huangc10··on 25 is ‘golden age’ for the ability to make random choices
When I was 25, I made the choice to quit my job as a hw engineer and travel the world. After a year, I decided to do sw instead. Haven't looked back since.

It wasn't exactly a random decision, but I remember the question was as simple as, "Should I just do it...?"

huangc10··on Amex, Challenged by Chase, Is Losing the Snob War
Interesting. What card is this? Can you provide a link? Is there an yearly fee for this card?
huangc10··on Amex, Challenged by Chase, Is Losing the Snob War
$450 yearly fee with $300 travel credit. This includes Uber/Lyft and public transportation. It's basically $150/yr, unless you don't use any of the $300 travel credit.
huangc10··on Amex, Challenged by Chase, Is Losing the Snob War
This is just me: I use whatever card I get the most points/benefits from for whatever scenario (travel, food, gas, groceries etc.). I couldn't care less what people think of me when I pull out my card.

It just so happens Chase has been pushing out cards that benefits my lifestyle the most.

huangc10··on The relationship between social media use and well-being
Sometime in the next few yrs or so (if not already), I suspect we'll see many research papers related to social media and suicide rates. Furthermore, it'll be interesting in cross examining this data with cultural views ie. Western culture vs. Asian culture where social media has really taken off.
huangc10··on A man wouldn’t leave an overbooked United flight, so he was dragged off
I don't know. Last minute logistical changes based on timetables, planes, weather, etc. The reason why I guessed this is because my brother is a pilot.
huangc10··on A man wouldn’t leave an overbooked United flight, so he was dragged off
This is just a guess...United needed to get a couple of pilots on the flight from Chicago to Louisville or else another flight would be delayed/canceled.

Only reason I can think of an employee would take precedence over passenger.

huangc10··on Uber finds one allegedly stolen Waymo file on an employee’s personal device
I have to...completely agree with you on your analogy. You forgot to mention the part about the urine sample.
huangc10··on Amazon Cash
> Choose to receive your barcode via text message or print-at-home. Bring this barcode into any participating store and show it to the cashier to add money to your Amazon Balance.

As a customer I don't really understand this concept. Why do I bring my barcode to one of the stores (CVS, etc.) to reload my Amazon Balance...?
