huangc10··on Swift Creator Chris Lattner Leaves Tesla After Only Six Months in the Job
> "Chris just wasn't the right fit for Tesla, and we've decided to make a change," Tesla said Tuesday, according to The Wall Street Journal.

I wonder what "wasn't the right fit" meant for Chris' scenario. Did he walk away or was he let go because of team or company dynamics? Or was he not the right fit for the job? It'll be interesting as it can provide insight in company culture of Tesla vs. Apple.

huangc10··on NASA picks 12 new astronauts from crush of applicants
I have no idea of any of the qualifications. I simply copied the quote from the NASA source in my comment. Why don't you bring it up with NASA?

I think the 75 m is just a fitness test kind of thing that everyone should be able to pass

huangc10··on NASA picks 12 new astronauts from crush of applicants
Actually, IMO, you can and should learn how to fly when you are an adult. Learning to swim well is actually quite difficult. It's like learning to play piano when you're older.

sorry to kill your dreams...

> As part of the Astronaut Candidate training program, candidates are required to complete military water survival before beginning their flying syllabus, and become SCUBA qualified to prepare them for spacewalk training. Consequently, all Astronaut Candidates are required to pass a swimming test during their first month of training. They must swim 3 lengths of a 25-meter pool without stopping, and then swim 3 lengths of the pool in a flight suit and tennis shoes with no time limit. They must also tread water continuously for 10 minutes wearing a flight suit.

I'm actually Canadian and when I looked into applying for CSA, they stated the requirement was a strong swimmer. They did some drills in the Atlantic.

huangc10··on NASA picks 12 new astronauts from crush of applicants
I've always wanted to be an astronaut but alas, you must be a strong swimmer (for training and misc. events purposes). Note to all, always get your kids to take swimming lessons...
huangc10··on Apple Design Awards 2017
Just want to point out 5/12 of the design award goes to puzzle/game apps and they were showcased as the first apps. It could mean something or it could mean nothing.
huangc10··on Why MLB hitters are suddenly obsessed with launch angles
The scrolling infographic was a very nice touch, especially with the DBZ style animation.

It's only natural that in little league coaches tell players to hit ground balls because kids have trouble fielding (it requires extreme precision, speed, and dexterity).

It's also quite obvious that you have to hit the ball high and hard to get a triple or home-run. Good to know data backs this up.

huangc10··on Core NFC beta
Been waiting a few years for this. I wanted to start something back in 2013 which detects NFC tags for ID but had to introduce QR scanning to get around the iOS issue.
huangc10··on Apple enters the augmented reality fray with ARKit for iOS

huangc10··on Apple enters the augmented reality fray with ARKit for iOS
How does AR work without integration with the camera? They showed a demo of dev AR camera view where the camera identified "surface".
huangc10··on Apple enters the augmented reality fray with ARKit for iOS
I think there must have always been some way to do AR (Pokemon GO and other games) but I believe it always required a team to accomplish this and possibly work with engineers at Apple.

As an independent developer, I hope the AR kit will make it much easier for me to create something fun and possibly integrate with Siri and other kits. This is what I'm hoping for :D

I know VR is hot right now, but I've always had the thought AR > VR.

huangc10··on Apple enters the augmented reality fray with ARKit for iOS
As a developer, this was the most exciting thing for me from today's WWDC opening speech. Can't wait to try this out myself. The demo they did with the AR game was really neat.
huangc10··on Ask HN: Which websites do you visit?
Get to work, open folder:

Feedly (more of a web app than website), Reddit, Hacker News and Slickdeals

Now that I think of it, most of the sites I visit are content aggregators and not individual sites.

huangc10··on Scaling Mobile Messaging at Airbnb
Thanks for the tip, and I'll be sure to mention Layer as a solution if/when we tackle this problem in the future. I just checked their site and it looks very promising.

After trying to find a solution earlier this year with my product manager, we decided to just stick to what we had (which was simply manual refresh in the messaging view by the user), due to engineering time/cost.

Since messaging is not a top priority in the app, we agreed to come back to the problem in the future. However, it is absolutely something I would like to solve given the chance. However, at the end of the day, this kind of messaging solution requires the work of backend engineers which will take up development time.

huangc10··on Scaling Mobile Messaging at Airbnb
Nice read. This is something we wanted to solve for our mobile applications too but we don't get enough traffic (per article, you guys are ~100k msgs/hr) to justify the engineering time required for this.

I don't use Airbnb as often as I should but I'm wondering do you guys have data on the users who simply use text messaging on the mobile devices (or other instant messengers?).

What led to the decision to spend time optimizing mobile messaging within the Airbnb app than just finding an easier path to connect users through text messaging?

huangc10··on Show HN: See if a movie is happy or sad with sentiment analysis
At the top, can you put a score or average of the analysis so we know if the overall movie is happy or sad? That number will be interesting :D
huangc10··on Worldwide tablet shipments have declined 8.5%
I can't really think of an essential daily app (minus work / minus business related / minus intensive reading) that I use which has better UI and UX on a tablet. Everything just seems easier on my iPhone 6 Plus.

Plus as some people already mentioned, tablets from couple of years ago still run quite well right now. Especially newer iPads.

huangc10··on An AI defeated human fighter pilots in an air combat simulator (2016)
#OldNews, this article is from 2016.

> What sets ALPHA apart is the genetic fuzzy tree decision system that can calculate an opponent’s movements or strategies 250 times faster than you can blink.

That's just not fair.

One more comment, can this thing (ALPHA) land an Airbus A320 on the Hudson?

huangc10··on AIY Projects
Really like the idea since I have a Raspberry Pi 3 sitting around. Will be interested in future projects but really not feeling the UI. Way too much bouncing taking the focus away from the content.

The product is already good enough. Why try to make it so flashy?

huangc10··on AIY Projects
I'm absolutely hating on the UI right now. So much bouncing...can they not?
huangc10··on Blue Bottle Coffee Introduces a Coffee Recommender

huangc10··on Introducing Yelp's GraphQL API
Going to sign up for the beta program. BTW, if you're in the SF area, definitely try Garaje. One of the best tacos and beers around.
huangc10··on Google accuses Uber of creating a fake company in order to steal its tech
If this is true, it's kind of a brilliant scheme, you know, in an evil "I'm going to take over the world" sorta way.
huangc10··on Show HN: Jolt Alarm – Wake up to a new song every day
Wow it's rare and also great you know how to write for both platforms. I'm focusing more on React Native because I don't know any Java...
huangc10··on Show HN: My first native iOS app – Cone, a real time color picker
This is very well done and looks beautiful. What an iPhone app is made to look like.

For everyone who is wondering how he got the hex, and names, etc. there are links in the bottom of the coneapp.io page. Here are the links:

huangc10··on Show HN: Jolt Alarm – Wake up to a new song every day
Cool app. Mind sharing what language you wrote them in? I'm always interested when app developers release both iOS and Android apps together.
huangc10··on Ask HN: How do you keep improving?
I'm currently reading Zero to One by Peter Thiel. Here is one thing interesting he mentions.

To grow, one can either scale vertically or horizontally (paraphrased).

Now if we apply this to your situation , scaling horizontally would be learning new languages, ie. Objective-C, Javascript etc. I'm assuming you're not really about this but you want to scale vertically.

If scaling vertically is the case, then what you really want to focus on is doing something either 1) other people have not done before yet and/or 2) do something that is 10x better than what is already out there. I don't do too much C/C++ dev but maybe think about embedded, OS, GPU, etc.

If you accomplish 1) and/or 2), then you can truly master C/C++ dev. My 2 cents.

huangc10··on The Boring Company [video]
I don't know why you got so many down votes. That's EXACTLY how Elon Musk came up with the Boring Company.
huangc10··on China's Didi Raises Over $5.5B in Record Tech Funding
> The round was said to have raised the four-year-old startup’s valuation to about $50 billion, up from a previous $34 billion after its acquisition of Uber’s China business.

Uber's valuation is ~$70 billion while Lyft's valuation is less than $10 billion. Therefore it seems like the two main players in ride-sharing will be Uber and Didi for the next while.

I can see Didi branching towards other markets (outside of China) and directly competing with Uber and Lyft. This will be interesting in the next while.
