huangc10··on Habits of Highly Miserable People
> 12. Glorify or vilify the past.

Do not do this. Do not live in the past. Do not think about what might, what could, what should have happened. Learn from it and move onwards. Nothing good comes from constantly dwelling on things that can't be changed.

huangc10··on Canada hits back at 'punitive' U.S. tariffs in 'turning point' in relations
Even though this decision may potentially affect my TN status in the states and more importantly will result in negative consequences for both countries, I am 100% behind Trudeau on this.
huangc10··on Andy Rubin Puts Essential Up for Sale, Cancels Next Phone
I think he meant given that the features are not the same, it's hard to compare the physical aspects (and more technically, product specifications) "fairly".
huangc10··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
I don't think there is one area specifically. I've actually lived all over the Bay Area. It's more of a sense that you'll be given a lot of opportunities and it's up to you to make the most of it.
huangc10··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
True, a lot of things is due in how a person's attitude and perception. I think somewhat has to do with freedom and positive cash flow and another user commented.
huangc10··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
Right, it's a bit of everything. Kind of like "the world is your oyster" feeling. I'm not speaking for everyone, but when I was in my early 20s, I think as long as cash was a net positive (ie. have savings), it was enough so didn't think too much about cost of living and high tax rates. Ofc, we're talking about late 2000s, so living was a bit cheaper.
huangc10··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
Canadian working in SV for almost a decade here. Yeah sure, it was about the technology, job, but a lot of it has to do with lifestyle (which the article fails to mention, and can't really be measured).

Since I've been here, I've learned how to drive stick shift, sky dived, and been on way more adventure than what I could have if I stayed at home. It's about adventure and taking a risk. Not necessarily about the money, but being paid more doesn't hurt ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

huangc10··on Ask HN: Has it become harder for Canadians to get work in the US on a TN visa?
I've been getting my TN Visas at YVR for the past 8 years. Always had to go to secondary and wait for an extra 1 hour. Nothing too different recently.

That being said, it also depends on how your application package is formatted, what position you're applying for, and your demeanor when applying. All these could affect your application process.

huangc10··on High-Paying Trade Jobs Sit Empty, While High School Grads Line Up for University
On a somewhat related note, I was walking past a construction site yesterday and noticed how big the workers were! The team was placing a beam into the ground (most likely the building foundation) and the dudes holding the beam in place must have ranged from 6'3 to 6'5 and ~250 lbs!

I do somewhat envy/admire what they do because it's more of a physical skill and keeps the body strong and in motion unlike sitting in front of a computer 9-5. Trade jobs are underrated and hopefully won't be replaced completely in the future.

huangc10··on Missions could see NASA spacecraft heading to Uranus and Neptune
Original Title: "NASA WANTS TO PROBE URANUS IN SEARCH OF GAS"

All jokes aside, these missions are still pretty far off and article doesn't really go into depth of what this research can help accomplish for future generations. Thoughts?

huangc10··on Japan's older hikikomori live in isolation, shunning society for years
It's a little bit different. In most cases for US and Europe, it is because of the high cost of housing and rent. I know a lot of friends who saved up a lot of money by living with parents from the ages of 21-30. I believe most want to stay with parents and save up until marriage.
huangc10··on Japan's older hikikomori live in isolation, shunning society for years
thanks, I missed that part from the article.
huangc10··on Japan's older hikikomori live in isolation, shunning society for years
"There are more than half a million hikikomori in Japan — according to the latest government survey published in 2016 — defined as people who have stayed home for more than six months without going to school or work and interacting with no one other than family."

One question for the hikikomori. If they don't work, how do they get money? I'm sure they can live relatively inexpensive lives but how do they get money to pay for rent? Does he work remotely? Bitcoin investments? So many questions...

huangc10··on Launch HN: Piccolo (YC W18) – Camera for controlling your home with gestures
Actually the lighting was the other question I had in mind. Impressive. When I worked on the Kinect code, lighting was never really an issue we had or wanted to tackle.

I think something that people don't realize until they start using motion sensing technology is that how intuitive it can really be. It might look awkward at first, but once it's seamlessly integrated (ie. stepping into the sensor's view), it's really just like magic. A good enough sensor can pick up and understand very specific motions.

Anyway, good luck guys.

huangc10··on Launch HN: Piccolo (YC W18) – Camera for controlling your home with gestures
The demo on the front page looks super cool. Signing up and looking forward to more progress and updates in the future. I wonder how accurate the finger recognition is? Is it accurate enough to pick up numbers so your fingers can be used to change the channel for example?

I did my final year engineering project with the Kinect (years ago!) and controlled a robotic arm to pick up an egg. Didn't know how else to apply this, but it seems like you guys really thought outside the box.

Only thing is the name...not sure about naming after the green alien from DBZ.

huangc10··on The Real History of TechCrunch
Doing a quick search on the About TechCrunch page and TechCrunch wikipedia page for "Keith Teare" will yield no results.

Another reason to do your due diligence when investing in ICOs.

huangc10··on Waze Carpool
This was extremely confusing for me. Why not have both driver and rider in Waze Carpool app...? Or is it for future integration?
huangc10··on Buy, sell, send and receive Bitcoin Cash on Coinbase
> assuming no additional risks emerge

The letter was simply a possible notion. No guarantee. Why not send out another letter saying they were going to release it on this day?

I know why, because they wanted to manipulate the market.

huangc10··on Buy, sell, send and receive Bitcoin Cash on Coinbase
Exactly the first thought that came to my mind.

BCH up 30%. I wonder how many Coinbase employees bought BCH throughout this past month.

Also. it's easily predictable that introducing a new currency will temporarily affect the other currencies negatively.

Very gray area.

huangc10··on Never raise money before launching a product
It happened today unfortunately. Confido ended up scamming early investors almost $400K. Like you, I like the idea of ICOs but it definitely is a risk.

Ink, which was created by Listia (YC alum), is actually trying to help those users who got scammed: https://medium.com/@PayWithInk/ink-airdrop-for-confido-token...

huangc10··on An Ethereum Startup Just Vanished After People Invested $374K
For cryptocurrency context, it means to deposit tokens into the Ethereum address for free.
huangc10··on An Ethereum Startup Just Vanished After People Invested $374K
Unfortunate for all the early investors of Confido. Ink announced on their blog that they will airdrop Ink tokens for all current Confido token holders (as of 11/20/17 1:30pm PST). https://medium.com/@PayWithInk/ink-airdrop-for-confido-token...
huangc10··on Show HN: Arxiv Vanity – Read academic papers from Arxiv as responsive web pages
Definitely useful in certain situations. Can't comment on how well the conversion works (yet) but I can see how this might be useful to a lot of people.

Me? I still mostly prefer reading physical academic papers because of needing to flip back and forth for re-reading (clarification) and adding personal notes/graphs/calculations.

Good job guys.

huangc10··on The Forces Behind Toutiao, China’s Content King
How can we trust any of the analytics coming out of mainland China? Can you be 100% positive that Toutiao is not controlled by the Chinese government? They can easily funnel all internet traffic to Toutiao and control it, and use it to their advantage. Curate the news to whatever way they want.

Toutiao is a privately owned company held in Beijing. Am I being paranoid? They can claim machine learning (and they probably do). However, until we can be 100% certain the Chinese government is not involved, I wouldn't personally trust any of the stats.

huangc10··on Google Clips is a new $249 wearable camera
What's the target market? All the marketing material on Google's site seemed to be aimed towards a family oriented theme. Have you ever thought, "oh, let's take a few photos while we make cookies in the POV of the kitchen table"...?

Has anyone needed something that is "candid" but also "not candid" (because you placed the camera there...)?

Maybe if they targeted sports, or security it'll make more sense?

huangc10··on Stripe Elements: Pre-built UI components to help you create checkout flows
Can this be used for just frontend and not integrate with Stripe's backend? ie. use the "elements" form and not create the token to transmit card information. Sort of like a beefier Card library by jessepollak (https://github.com/jessepollak/card)
huangc10··on Show HN: The Million Dollar Homepage as an Ethereum Smart Contract and DApp
This is the most stupid awesome worst best idea ever. I have so many feelings tied together, it's hard to express.

Good for you guys. I can't wait to see it filled up!

huangc10··on How Much Sleep Do Fitbit Users Really Get?
It'll be really interesting to see the sleep data compared against other countries or continents. Sex and age is interesting but you can't tell much from this data. Could comparing it with other countries correlate with a country's economy, culture, general state of affairs? Also, if there is a year to year trend cross reference with country.

If this data is accurate, it could be useful in determining a country's future economics. Ie. perhaps a general population's 5 mins of average less sleep means more stress which means more economic downturn/changes?

huangc10··on Jolla Tablet refunds
I'm an iOS developer and I mostly love iOS design and user experience but one OS that, imo, is better is MeeGo.

I used the N9 briefly for 3 months back in '12 or '13 and other than the ecosystem issue, the OS was intuitive and simple to use.

That being said, I'm slowly moving onwards to React Native projects so hopefully in the near future, my paths will re-intertwine again.
