hs··on Ask YC: Your ugliest hacks.
u may want to use regex to reduce / eliminate if checkings

i use newlisp, this is the code:

(set 'urls '(

(define (getKW url)

(find {([^/|^_]*)(_W0QQ|\?)} url 1) ;find using regex

$1) ;return the first matched string inside (bla*)
(map println (map getKW urls))

;f350-wheels-20

;FACTORY-15-Mercedes-E320-300E-OEM-Chrome-Wheels-Rims

;mini-cooper-rims

hs··on Do modern IDEs make us dumber?
yes, i use vim and vi text editors for lisp paren matching is essential

it's not like i'm advocating writing code using cli or sed

hs··on Do modern IDEs make us dumber?
i'm pointing to something deeper, because of high level abstractions, FP codes tend to be short -> can fit in one head; thus, IDE is less essential

no amount of popularity can change that

hs··on How Alex Payne Uses TextMate
vim has it too, powerful indeed

select the block use v or ^v and navigate with hjkl, do commands like c,d

replace string in text selection -> v (or ^v) + hjkl + :s/old/new

comment a block of code (5 lines) with # -> 0 + ^v + 5j + I + # + Esc + j

as a plus, u don't need mouse ... fear the simplicity

hs··on Ask HN: Gift ideas for hacker types?
"How to get rich" from Felix Dennis

one of his article is in the ycombinator library (good sign as hacker types like this book)

http://ycombinator.com/lib.html -> If You Want to be Rich, First Stop Being So Frightened. Fear of failing in the eyes of the world is the single biggest impediment.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2092-2291061,00.html

http://www.amazon.com/How-Get-Rich-Greatest-Entrepreneurs/dp...

hs··on Do modern IDEs make us dumber?
from my observations, OOP style programmer tends to rely most on IDE while FP style the least

that might reflect the relative dumbness of the two

hs··on Bots Get Smart
i misread it as 'boss get smart'

luckily i was wrong

hs··on The High-Res Society
the trend i see is that the most ambitious people do startup and degree(s) matter less as time goes

maybe a quantitative measure like Z = asset_from_work_now / cost_before_work_then where cost_before_work_then include tuition, rent, etc ... work can be defined as wall street, lawyer, plumber, startup, etc

Z for googlers can be in the thousands to millions, while Z for wall streets might be in the tens or hundreds ... big difference

or course Z can be negative (bankrupt+debt) ... but the huge discrepancy of Z value only reinforces my point, only the brave and ambitious dare to walk the uncertain path; the rest only follow thru the proven, safe path

hs··on The High-Res Society
true, you might want to look at empires that lasts for centuries after rapid expansion

alexander the great, napoleon, the japanese (1940ish) don't count because they cannot sustain the expansion

ironically, mongol empire (and its vast expansion) lasted for 3.5 centuries. there must be some other reasons that neither cruelty nor barbarism can explain (in fact, empires based on cruelty/barbarism don't last long)

hs··on The High-Res Society
"There's no evidence that famously successful organizations like the Roman army or the British East India Company were any less afflicted by protocol and politics than organizations of the same size today. But they were competing against opponents who couldn't change the rules on the fly by discovering new technology."

the mongol empire was the game changer [adopting siege machine, biological weapon (throwing infected corpse thru enemy's wall -- the seed of black death), religion (islam, christian, budhism), trade (silk route, 'pony' express), and the rise of creative class]

it conquered the world with bow and arrow, lasted 3.5 centuries (longer than the nuclear powered usa)

barbar/dictator/despotic empire can't/won't last that long -- there's truly something about mongol

hs··on Why Lisp Failed
maybe java code that has dozens of namespaces, thousands of classes & objects, hundreds of methods needs an ide badly

lisp code written as fp doesn't require all those, so it fits the programmer's head better

hs··on Kottke: Does the broken windows theory hold online?
slightly off topic but still on broken windows theory

do you normally clean up your code 'aesthetic' ?

like the commented:

old code (to make it unactive) -> ;(define bla)

return value -> ;returns '(1 2 3)

debugging print statements -> ;(print bla)

hacks -> ;quick hack for x, buggy but good enough for now

what's the better practices? thx

hs··on Seth's Blog: If you could change your life
bush is the most famous hbs mba lol

i hope putting pic of bush won't scare the applicants

hs··on The other half of "Artists Ship"
maybe a better test is whether you'll do it for free (no incentives, moral/material/etc) just for the fun of it

to me, hacking > sales (no, charity/non-profit/giving away money doesn't count -> there's moral incentive there)

hs··on Ask HN: Should I drop out or not?
don't confuse college 'experience' with freedom, they're not the same

nothing gives better track record than startup (even failed ones) ... don't confuse it with the college-track-record ... they are not the same

college rank is a gamed metric (engineering rank #1=100 pt, rank #2=90ish pt, rank 3-rest=60ish) ... don't bother with it

college debt is an early enslavement scheme (later u'll get family and mortgages) ... beware

My suggestion is you to drop out and read this book:

How to Get Rich by Felix Dennis:

Young, Penniless, and Inexperienced?

"Excellent. You stand by far the best chance of becoming as rich as you please. You have an advantage that neither education nor upbringing, nor even money, can buy—you have almost nothing. And therefore you have nothing to lose.

"Nearly all great fortunes acquired by entrepreneurs arose because they had nothing to lose. Nobody had bothered to tell them that such and such a thing could not be done or would be likely to fail. Or if they had been told, then they weren't listening; they were too busy proving those around them wrong."

hs··on Ask HN: Should I drop out or not?
"Steve Jobs is not an exception. He met Woz in college. This means he benefitted from college."

are you sure about that? any reference?

from www.foundersatwork.com/steve-wozniak.html:

"There's another guy at Homestead High School, younger than you, and he's interested in electronics and pranks and things too and you really should meet him." So he thought we were alike.

hs··on Poll: CS, music, or math - which major produces better programmers?
it doesn't matter, merit can't buy passion
hs··on Ask YC: Where do you buy domain names?
i use 1and1.com ... no idea if it's good or not

any comment?

hs··on Ask HN: Does solving math problems make you a good programmer?
math scales programming

compare j=n*(n+1)/2 to for i in range(n+1): j+=i

the former being math and the latter programming for solving summation from 0 to n

hs··on Kaizen for Developers: No Inventory
kaizen at code level, i try to eliminate as many as temp vars as possible by using closure, map, macro etc

it's because i'm dumb, my brain doesn't have much STM capacity (that's why i don't use OOP)

hs··on Why CLisp is under GPL - an email thread between Richard Stallman and Bruno Haible
stallman is a good lawyer
hs··on Ask HN: Good KVM for Mac/Linux Setup?
how about using vnc (terminal server client) ? it's free and no cable, although a bit slow (for example, high bandwidth anime) on wireless LAN

i normally control my mac mini powerpc in living room from my room wirelessly

hs··on Suspect Has Witness that Doesn't Lie: His Metrocard
have you read the article? it gives an example of a murderer who tried to fool metrocard ... but failed

the metrocard itself cannot be used to identify a person's whereabout; however, it can be used to constrain the movement

the key word in that article is "physically" ... the metrocard data is used to determine how physically plausible an action is

for example, one uses metrocard at 9amET in new york, then someone get killed in LA at 10amET, s/he can't be physically possible candidate even if ALL govt witness say so

of course, orthogonal info help too, a phone call at 930amET or even 705amET ATM withdrawal (with pic)

hs··on Suspect Has Witness that Doesn't Lie: His Metrocard
i do keep ALL printed transactions, from grocery to ATM (where banks do photograph the user)

just in case

hs··on Links between Paul Graham's essays
the most connected are "gh" and "start" ... that's very telling

thx

hs··on The Art & Science of CSS is Free to Download

hs··on Ask HN: small office network
"192.168.0.* and the switch will give off something like 192.168.1.."

i think you mean wired-router instead of switch, because afaik switch & hub don't assign ips

but if u use switch, then the workstations & int_serv are 192.168.0.

hs··on USB 3.0 to Deliver a Tenfold Speed Increase
you can do that today, use a 3.5" hdd (laptop hd) and ide2usb converter (aka enclosure)

don't buy metal casing tho, i got my 3.5" hdd short-circuited and now is dead -- now i never use enclosure casing

hs··on Ask HN: How do you use your FreeBSD desktop box?
i used to use FreeBSD until the pain kills me (had to rebuild kernel to activate nat)

openbsd generic kernel covers almost everything i need (no bluetooth support) - for complete hw support, i use ubuntu

overall, openbsd is simpler. Last week i just upgraded from 4.0 to 4.4 on remote machine in about 2-3 hours). I never bothered to upgrade before :D 400+ days uptime is normal

for desktop, i use dwm, firefox3, mrxvt, qiv, axyftp, vifm, vim (non-gui), mpg123, mplayer, ImageMagick, gimp, lighttpd, mercurial, newlisp, tightvncviewer (to control my Mac Mini GUI remotely)

hs··on AskHN: What browser and browser plugins do you use?
swiftweasel + firebug
