hs··on The Impending Demise of the University
university won't go away if govt joins in further in cooperative exploitation, like requiring degree/certificate to do something

like, what if the average mom is required to have a degree just to cook regular food? because otherwise she's unqualified and can 'danger' her family

altho it seems that certification is required for lucrative professions (we prolly won't see degree is required for cooking, gardening, plumbing, etc) ... to protect the incumbent

anyway, we won't see law and medical schools going away if the artificial limits, exams, certifications still exist (those further making these fields harder to enter -> more lucrative)

like it or not, education (and religion) is a form of social control.

hs··on Poll: Is my own car worth it?
a very fuel efficient motorcycle (like 100 cc displacement) runs like 30 kilometers per liter, that's about 60 mile per gallon

the fuel tank volume for small motorcycle is like 4 liter, the bigger ones is like 10 liter, so the tank ranges from 1 - 3 gallons

so for 60 miles roundtrip expect to fill the tank every day or two (about 5 mins wasted at gas station)

but still it's much cheaper unless your hourly rate is 100+ dollars

it might be safer (paradoxically, riding a bike makes you feel unsafe, just like driving small car which in turn increases safety)

i use it to train my perception (more feedbacks from wind, noise, smell, sights)

but yeah, once you ride motorcycles, you'll never look back

i agree, consider motorcycle, if you turn out not liking it the risk is very low (like < $500 USD)

also, maintenance is super easy and cheap. just unscrew, dump dirty oil to recycle bin, screw back and fill 1 quart of motor oil. no filter required! total maintenance (tire, oil, lamp, gaskets, etc) is like $30 USD per year

hs··on Ask HN: Is mobile internet a threat to creativity?
iff (mobile) internet makes you passive (like TV) -- clicking on url is nothing more than a glorified mode of switching channel on TV
hs··on Ask HN: How do you learn about the business aspects of running a startup?
just do it, one man show -> you take all responsibility, if it fails, it's all yours.

btw, don't confuse MBA with actual business experience.

hs··on Ask HN: In which modern language/environment/framework is programming a joy?
the problem is, modern tools are too complex. they are trying to be smarter than the user

i like dumb, old power tools that don't get in my way -> unix+vim+lisp

hs··on Ask HN: I'm Tired of Hacking. What Do I Do? Please Advise.
did you ever happen to sell it?

coz o/w it's just an added weight -- well in your case it's maybe for appearance so it's a good investment/insurance

some people do hide gold in their teeth, might be interesting if that's your thing

hs··on Ask HN: I'm Tired of Hacking. What Do I Do? Please Advise.
i got scoliosis too, and i went to chinese medical master (he also does accupuncture) that specializes in massaging and bones structure

he didn't use any equipment. i was to sit on a chair, knee/shin next to each other. an assistant locks the knees by hugging using both hands so my body cannot move easily.

he then 'measured' my backbone and then stretched my arm, twisted my back based on his initial estimate and then do the measure-stretch-twist loop. it took him quite considerable force (he's sweating)

the whole process took about an hour and must be done in many visits (mine's 3), depending on severity

i felt better but cannot provide statistics/numbers; however, my cousin can. her father is a modern doctor who cannot believe ancient chinese methods. he took x-rays after each visit. he told me that during 2 weeks of therapy, her scoliosis improved from 40deg to 20deg.

i want to visit the chinese medical man again, it's been more than 2 years. there's no 'cure' or 'pills'. i believe if i do better pose i won't need to go visiting him again ... but i'm as uneducated as layman about correct posture so i always revert back to old problems

if you have resources on this please share. the hindu squat looks very tiring -- 500 of these in one go?

btw i'm now using stand-up desk (like a week or so) and my back, heel, ankle and toes are aching and cramping. is it to be expected especially for scoliosis guys? after feeling pain, i just sit for a while. i guess after a while i'll develop endurance

thx for the links

if this continues, 'college dropout' will be replaced by 'high school graduate' -- simply because s/he takes high ed as cost-saving bootstrap strategy

hs··on Ask HN: Econometrics, Bioinformatics, Game Theory. Python or R?
my friend told me that econometrics is his hardest phd qual. iirc he mentioned statistics, time series, and stochastics (very heavy maths) ... to me those seem to be best handled with statistical package like R

my bio friend told me about string matching, she used perl. i'm not sure if R can do pcre regex pattern matching.

so yeah, you may end up using R and python. if i have to decide, i'll use pyton, because it's more flexible

hs··on Ask HN: best languages to learn as a newcomer
i did a lot of matrix analysis during my grad study, from statistics (general linear model, projection, pseudo inverse, design of experiment, etc) to dynamic system (control, state space, etc) using matlab -- i even used it to generate random distribution from uniform for simulations

the closest thing to matlab is python+numaray+matplotlib (maybe it changes name to scipy?)

i think she will face matrix calculation ... so, use python (matlab is easier, but less flexible) ... i didn't go too far with R but from my experience it's less flexible than python

NB: i did those 5 years ago so don't trust my words too much

hs··on Management and mathematics
if the erp nullifies the employees' initiatives by shifting responsibilities, then the erp loses maybe because there's no mechanism to take risk.

in the spirit of tfa, erp encourages mediocre users. so, the company with users who have to take responsibility wins.

hs··on Just do it
edison's invention inspires thousands of academic thesis -- the reverse is not true.
hs··on Poll: Should we ban TechCrunch?
yc is in bed with tc, you won't get too far with this
hs··on Ask HN: How can the changing industrial manufacturing world be applied to hacking?
In what ways do you think the internet will continue to disperse and converge?

i think the internet helps refining the art by feedback loop. i learnt a lot reading success/fail experiments results posted in forums. needless to say, i won't be able to make fert without the internet -- so dissemination of idea goes without saying

Which technologies are still out of reach to most people in terms of price or required technological know-how?

law can be bigger hurdle, especially for chemistry. price is not normally the problem since the raw materials are usually very cheap. 100x markup for commercial ready products is common.

What is the optimal size for hackers to be able to effectively collaborate but not be bogged down by excessive control?

hmmm ... one -- if you can automate the whole process without human presence (it's very doable in web 2.0 -- much less so as things go more physical or from bit to atom spectrum)

hs··on Ask HN: What software do you install on a clean windows install
i have a 2gb image of win98 simply because win98 has generic kernel (you can swap the hard drive to any hardware and most of the time it won't BSOD).

driver for samsung mfc was installed (never buy korean again, their hws are not friendly toward mac/unix), maybe gvim, putty and some other softwares

i didn't even install antivirus since i can just dd the hd again if it's acting weird. it's fair to say i don't use windows. it's there only for win-only hardwares which over time lose their significance.

hs··on The Climate-Industrial Complex
at least, in 2007 gore won nobel prize in technology for inventing the internet

for his theoretical model on climate change, he's on the right path to win his second nobel prize ... in mathematics, no less.

hs··on Ask HN: Who is your role model for startups besides Paul Graham?
plentyoffish, balsamiq and other single founder guys

of course, single-founder startup is romanticized only by fool, like me ^@^

hs··on Fruits as Beautiful in the Garden as They Are Delicious
my late dad planted mango, star fruit, citrus, durian, guava. i have fond memories about it ^@^

now i'm thinking about it, fruit is nature's fast food -- just pick and eat it up. just dump the remains on ground (bio-degradable by default)

no fridge is needed (a living plant IS the nature's fridge)

even further, the water content can be quite pure (think plant as nano-bio-filter); i guess it's very hard to get fruit contaminated with heavy metals.

i like the 'bio sensor' ... if fruit looks bad and/or smells rotten, then it's probably not safe to eat

i wonder about the feeding-people efficiency of fruit farmden compared to corn field. for example, if i have a family of 2 and 100 m² land, what to plant for self-sustainable* garden? i do think gardening as 'depression-proof'

* self-sustainable in the sense that a garden is a close-system. it only needs water and sun. pest control by ducks/chickens. herb control by planting diverse plants (allelopathy). fert is provided by composting loop.

hs··on Ruby on Rails and the importance of being stupid
http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq14.html

14.4.1 - About swap Historically, all kinds of rules have been tossed about to guide administrators on how much swap to configure on their machines. The problem, of course, is there are few "normal" application.

One non-obvious use for swap is to be a place the kernel can dump a copy of what is in core in the event of a system panic for later analysis. For this to work, you must have a swap partition (not a swap file) at least as large as your RAM. By default, the system will save a copy of this dump to /var/crash on reboot, so if you wish to be able to do this automatically, you will need sufficient free space on /var. However, you can also bring the system up single-user, and use savecore(8) to dump it elsewhere.

Many types of systems may be appropriately configured with no swap at all. For example, firewalls should not swap in normal operation. Machines with flash storage generally should not swap. If your firewall is flash based, you may benefit (slightly) by not allocating a swap partition, though in most other cases, a swap partition won't actually hurt anything; most disks have more than enough space to allocate a little to swap.

There are all kinds of tips about optimizing swap (where on the disk, separate disks, etc.), but if you find yourself in a situation where optimizing swap is an issue, you probably need more RAM. In general, the best optimization for swap is to not need it.

In OpenBSD, swap is managed with the swapctl(8) program, which adds, removes, lists and prioritizes swap devices and files.

hs··on Ruby on Rails and the importance of being stupid
is there any case not having swap hurt ?

assume the RAM alone are enough for heaviest load, no memory leak, no exhaustive ... that's it, the server is never out of RAM memory

hmmm, does hn server use swap?

hs··on Ask HN: What do you eat?
what approach?

don't you get lower pressure at high altitude, thus cooking takes longer ... or do i get it backward?

hs··on Tell HN: PG's 6 Unexpected Advantages of "Cheapness" in a Startup
for simple things, always build is better if one is less dependent to time and money

actually, scratch that, it's even better when time and money are tight

in my case, i bought baking, washing soda and lye for my hygiene. 5kg each, each kg lasts for a year. extremely cheap (like $1/kg). only one time transaction.

i no longer go to soap, toothpaste, detergent and drano section when i go to grocery. suppose that takes 5 mins for searching, picking up, queueing and paying for each hygiene run while in grocery, it easily adds up to 52*5 = 260 mins time not wasted per year.

hs··on Tell HN: PG's 6 Unexpected Advantages of "Cheapness" in a Startup
i think #1 should be #6 to make sense.

after one is forced to build, do sales and being efficient, there's little time left to raise money

hs··on What's Holding Back Google Apps?
i agree, it's amazing what ms office can do these days.

my niece did image manipulation (gradient, bending, shearing, shadowing) by just clicking on previews in ms office 2009?. the same feat would take me 15 mins in gimp

hs··on Ask HN: Great design without designer on-board?
true, ui != photoshop. one can have pixel-perfect but unusable site

i like ui.jquery; adapt the API & bundled example source-code to simple projects, then after practicing, apply to larger projects.

for ornaments, i like inkscape (pkg_add inkscape or apt-get install inkscape). it's parametric, svg->png. the bundled tutorials are extremely good.

gimp and imagemagick sometimes are useful, but not necessary.

i focus on ui.jquery and inkscape (both free, open source) which don't have very steep learning curve.

hs··on Today My US Investor Visa Application Was Denied
i was denied usa visitor visa in 2007 -- the interviewer said i didn't put specific date, despite me having entered usa multiple time during the last 25 years

i guess she got a point. i never really miss usa much so i never really intended to go there, that's why i didn't buy ticket and put specific date

bad things hurt you ONLY if you allow it

i haven't re-applied any visa since then :D ... and no i don't want to go to usa either, even third-world countries are pretty good these days (i only need wifi, laptop, really minimalist stuff)

here i got servants for my family, life is pretty relaxed. actually i must say that my standard of living is higher here than when i lived in usa. the girls are nicer too, not as materialistic as the usa counterparts.

hs··on Thriving Norway provides an Economics Lesson
but norway is debt-free (accourding tfa)

i'm not sure about uae, especially dubai

hs··on Ask HN: What have been your experiences using Piracetam?
my mom is using it (1200 mg / day, 400 mg each morning, afternoon and evening)

her neurologist prescribed it because my mom got stroke and got clogged artery near neck. she got little oxygen to her brain. the mri shows black areas in her brain.

my uncles (a lot from my mom's family are doctors) describe piracetam as merely vitamin or nootropic, it doesn't cure anything

i'm not sure whether it's safe to completely dismiss piracetam for her. last year her dose was 2400mg/day. after hearing my uncles i decided to reduce it to 1200mg/day and never seeing the neurologist anymore (his prescriptions are mostly vitamins, dha, ala, omega3, etc) because i don't see value in it

anyway so far, nothing bad happened after reduction. it's probably safe to be completely independent from nootropic and using diet + exercise as natural alternative
