hrrsn··on T-Mobile Employee Made Unauthorized ‘SIM Swap’ to Steal Instagram Account
From someone else with a three letter IG handle, I'm so sorry to hear about that. I'm perpetually paranoid about losing it.
hrrsn··on HoweyCoins – An educational tool to alert investors to possible fraud
They explain this as a red flag on the SEC page. https://www.investor.gov/howeycoins

> Investors should understand that most licensed and registered investment firms do not allow their customers to use credit cards to buy investments or to fund an investment account. We urge investors to work only with a licensed or registered investment professional or firm and not attempt to use a credit card to fund investments.

hrrsn··on Why Pre-Order Food Then Wait in Line
>I have had to send cash to my sister a handful of times recently. Because her bank (Bank of America) stopped allowing cash deposits to any account other than your own, the most convenient and inexpensive way to do this was through Walmart, which has its own money transfer service. You can arrange the transfer through an app, then you go to an express line at a Walmart store and complete the whole transaction in under a minute.

The fact that you can't just send money from your online banking to another person absolutely baffles me.

hrrsn··on Charles Proxy now available on iOS
Apps can do this by presenting a configuration profile to the user. This requires entering the passcode and a few steps - it’s not something they can do silently.
hrrsn··on Charles Proxy now available on iOS
Looks like this app is the one mentioned in that article. They appear to do both Safari content blocking and use the VPN profiles to block DNS requests (as in no traffic hits their servers).
hrrsn··on iPhone protected you from Facebook call scraping. Android, not so much
>This believe based on trust to Apple, not on technical limitations.

I trust Apple a lot more than Google/Facebook/etc.

hrrsn··on iPhone protected you from Facebook call scraping. Android, not so much
iOS doesn't. Apps using private APIs are not allowed on the App Store. Apple granted Uber an entitlement for a private API, but no other app has this: https://twitter.com/chronic/status/915930211941781504

hrrsn··on Let’s talk about usernames
They wanted to pay via PayPal. I'm not accepting anything reversible for it.

Also, I don't want to be out of it if they report to Instagram that it's for sale etc.

hrrsn··on Twitter Killing Its Mac App
This looks great. Does it support Slack threads?
hrrsn··on Let’s talk about usernames
I was lucky enough to get a 3 character Instagram handle back in the day. I get 5+ password resets a day and frequent offers for it - the most I've been offered is $25,000 for it. It's a pain.
hrrsn··on Chat app for use when your battery is less than 5%
I remember when Pokemon Go was the rage, a friends OnePlus would need to be plugged in to a battery bank the entire time, even then it still drained slowly.
hrrsn··on Google ditches Ubuntu for Debian for internal engineering environment
I'd love to know more about the setups you guys use! As in, what you can choose, how much freedom you have tool wise etc
hrrsn··on Why Uber Can Find You but 911 Can’t
It's an interesting concept! Hello from term.dame.hurt (Auckland).
hrrsn··on Intel Security Issue Update: Initial Performance Data Results for Client Systems
How convenient.
hrrsn··on Bitcoin Can Drop 50% and China Miners Will Still Make Money
Huge amount of R&D, sure. But the mining ASIC market is largely dominated by Bitmain right now.
hrrsn··on Bitcoin Can Drop 50% and China Miners Will Still Make Money
I still don't see why we aren't seeing new ASIC suppliers set up shop. Is there a significant amount of R&D that goes into creating these chips?

hrrsn··on Blizzard's Battle.net Updater Installs Root Certificate
Buying a wildcard cert means they can mismanage their keys for *.battle.net.

Having a CA means they can mismanage any domain.

hrrsn··on BitPay Will Process Payments on Multiple Blockchains, Starting with Bitcoin Cash
This is the major (technical - plenty of political issues) problem I have with Bcash. It’s cheap and fast because transaction volumes, and price, are 10% of BTC, yet blocks are 1.5x the size (roughly, looking at a block explorer). As soon as they fill up, they’ll have the exact same problems down the line. Increasing the block size doesn’t scale long term and is a bandaid solution at best.

BTC was fast and cheap when adoption was low.

hrrsn··on Litecoin and Ethereum buys and sells are temporarily disabled
You can take the crypto out of the above statement and it's still true - yet I know plenty of funds that speculate on currencies.
hrrsn··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
Worked fine for me on 10.13.1.
hrrsn··on Show HN: OSX-ISO – Create a bootable ISO of macOS from the installation app file
Not quite, this is just creating the installer ISO. However, macOS is perfectly happy to be installed on an external hard drive or USB drive, and that can be booted on any Mac that supports the macOS version on the drive.
hrrsn··on Show HN: OSX-ISO – Create a bootable ISO of macOS from the installation app file
You'd need to use something like Clover with either a macOS USB created using the ./createinstallmedia command in the installers, or using the ISO this tool creates.

You can install Clover on a USB plus your install media, boot off it and get to the installer. This should get you most of the way there.

>a lot of systems still have mediocre high-dpi support

As far as I can tell, the only desktop OS with good high-DPI support is macOS.

hrrsn··on Internet speed guarantees must be realistic, says Ofcom
Not the guy you asked, but here the speeds are set by the fibre infrastructure holders, not the ISP. So on residential connections the fastest you'll get is 900/500. I pay $129 NZD (~335 PLN). Not symmetrical, but damn impressive nonetheless.
hrrsn··on Internet speed guarantees must be realistic, says Ofcom
Our government has invested a lot more into broadband infrastructure than Australia has. We rolled out FTTN (Fibre to the Node) for improved ADSL/VDSL years ago, and now FTTH is deployed in a lot of places so far. Australia proposed FTTH, then rolled back on that. So yes, we're generally much better for Internet than Australia.

Nope, 100% unlimited. Metered connections were a thing here 5 years ago, nowdays you generally get 80GB or so to start with and can upgrade to unlimited for a little extra. I pay $129 NZD ($91 USD~) per month for my unlimited almost-gigabit connection which is the most expensive residential tier available, and I can pick from any number of ISPs (there's like 5 major ones and plenty of tiny players) as the infrastructure is shared, unlike what you see in the U.S. with the cable companies.

hrrsn··on Internet speed guarantees must be realistic, says Ofcom
The New Zealand Commerce Commission got grumpy when ISPs started selling gigabit plans as 1000mbit, as it's not realistically possible for consumers to reach those speeds. So, instead of gigabit, we get "up to 900/400Mbps" or more realistically about 800/400, which, you know what, I can live with.
