hrayr··on Django 1.10 released
Looks like channels was not included in 1.10. Is there still a plan to package it with Django or is it better served to be a stand alone app for now?

According to channels' documentation:

> You can install Channels as a library for Django 1.8 and 1.9, and it (should be) part of Django 1.10.

hrayr··on Django 1.10 released
I'm still stuck with Django 1.4 for one of my projects, it's such a big hurdle to upgrade it. I wonder if it's worth to just straight up rewrite it in 1.10.

Some of the highlights:

- Full text search for PostgreSQL.

- New-style middleware to solve the lack of strict request/response layering of the old-style of middleware.

- Official support for Unicode usernames.

hrayr··on The world's cities with the most bookstores and libraries per capita
There are plenty of Barns & Noble's around Los Angeles. They're usually located in town centers (Americana at Brand, The Commons, etc.) and most of them are treated as such with open reading areas for children and a coffee shop for adults and students. It's one of my daughters' favorite spots, I hope that element doesn't go away anytime soon.

I was confused as to why I have a downvote button now, I just realized I barely passed 500 few days ago, woo.

This is a nice visual depiction of why LA and most of the west coast is so nice year round.
hrayr··on Images solved: auto crop, auto quality, auto responsive, auto everything
Is there a library that has similar functionality? I rather take care of image manipulation locally, it seems such a waste of bandwidth and resources to send large images just to have them cropped.

Edited to say the service itself looks awesome, I just wished it was local.

Who would you say has the creme de la creme of software security talent, and can you with a straight face say that they have not been compromised at some level?

Security is hard, but I wonder if it's P VS NP?

hrayr··on Habitat — A new approach to automation
Home Automation is what first came to mind when I read the title. With this in mind, reading the blurb on the website sounded like, oh they're talking about building home automation software...

"build automation, IT automation, deployment automation, etc" would have saved me some confusion. Or simply compare yourself to other solutions out there will help me understand what category this new piece of utility and name fall into.

Funny how you're trying to avoid breaking your streak of not mentioning nazis.

hrayr··on How to Get Out of Bed

They don't sound like fairy tales, they sound like things that work for them and perhaps others. It's OK that some tips are not practical for you, it doesn't make them any less useful.

You won't see the top menu links.

hrayr··on Ask HN: Do you keep a programmer journal? If so what do you document and how?
That's a great use case, thanks. Do you keep one? If so, how often do you find yourself going back and finding a solution from your journal? I feel a lot of my bugs are one-offs, maybe I'm not seeing a pattern because I'm not documenting them properly?
hrayr··on Twitter’s updated Mac app wasn’t made by Twitter
> PS: I thought @jack was going to open the third-party ecosystem back up again. That also has the potential to help address this problem. Did that not happen?

I asked Jack about the third-party ecosystem on his producthunt Q&A, he said Fabric is a strong offering and they're building more to repair relationship.[1] I don't know if them building developer tools is same as repairing relationships though.

hrayr··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
No offense taken. I used the word belief because this is my own personal perspective. Up to this point, everything that Amazon has done, it benefited me (personally), as a customer. This is one instance where I can't fathom a guess as to how it benefits me or any of their customers. Especially when they give an insulting reason, like customer confusion.
hrayr··on Amazon Will Ban Sale of Apple, Google Video-Streaming Devices
I had a long held belief that Amazon is a principled and trust worthy company... sadly that vision is crumbling before my eyes.
