hpvic03··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2019)
AdQuick | Senior Software Engineer, Full-time | Venice, CA | Onsite or Remote | https://www.adquick.com

AdQuick is like AirBnb for Outdoor Advertising. Our mission is to make outdoor ads (e.g. billboards, transit ads, etc.) easy to both buy and measure.

We are an early-stage startup: we're 3 years old, we have 30 people total and an engineering team of 9. The founding team consists of startup veterans who were early employees at Instacart. We've raised 3M in funding from Garry Tan & Alexis Ohanian's VC firm, Initialized Capital.

We have all kinds of interesting problems to solve:

* Building a consumer-grade product experience for marketers planning/buying/executing outdoor ad campaigns that includes searching, sorting, filtering, grouping, tagging, commenting, etc.

* Mapping: efficiently displaying 1M+ points on a map, integrating census data & other data layers onto maps with visualizations

* Analytics tools. Some examples: pulling data from our customers' ads accounts (e.g. AdWords, FB Ads) to visualize the impact of their outdoor ad campaigns. Using anonymized movement data to track visits to brick-and-mortar stores. Scraping Instagram and using image recognition to track social shares.

* Coordinating things in the real world to printing design assets and install billboards

* And much, much more

We're looking for:

- Experience in Ruby, Rails, React, Webpack, Postgres or similar technologies

- 3+ years experience working on production systems

- People who actively want the startup experience: taking a lot of ownership, having a big impact, and building amazing products that customers love.

AdQuick is Kayak for Outdoor Advertising. Our mission is to make outdoor ads easy to both buy and measure (think billboards, posters, transit ads, etc.).

We are a 2 year old startup with 17 people total and an engineering team of 7. The founding team consists of startup veterans who were early at Instacart. We are funded by Garry Tan & Alexis Ohanian's VC firm, Initialized.

We are doing some really interesting work with ingesting data from many different sources (Google AdWords/Analytics, Facebook Ads, Yelp, Foursquare, Demographics, etc.) and then visualizing it on maps. We use that data to help our customers plan and execute campaigns. Then after campaigns, we use some of that data plus other sources to help our customers measure the effectiveness of their campaigns.

We're looking for:

- Experience in Ruby, Rails, React, Webpack, Postgres or similar technologies

- 3+ years experience in working on production systems

- Strong sense of ownership and product sense

Shoot us an email at jobs@adquick.com if this sounds interesting to you!

hpvic03··on Ask HN: Best books on AI?
If you want to get into actually implementing deep neural nets (what everyone is calling "AI" these days), then look at TensorFlow and Keras.

This is a good getting started book for TensorFlow:

https://www.amazon.com/TensorFlow-Machine-Learning-Cookbook-...

hpvic03··on OpenAI and Microsoft
Seems like Microsoft is trying to do to Google in AI what Google did to Apple in Mobile, using OpenAI as a vehicle.

i.e. if you aren't the leading innovator, the next best thing to do is to make the technology free and widespread.

How does having to register to see the storefront relate to the transparency of item prices?

I didn't say the markups were available on a per-item basis, I said you could see which stores were marked up and which ones weren't. Just click on the store dropdown, and you'll see this:

http://i.imgur.com/KElc00R.png

We'd rather not mark anything up at all, and if something is marked up, we'd prefer to tell you by how much, but we can't do this right now for structural reasons.

If you're worried about unknown markups, just shop at any one of the stores that says "Prices are same as in-store," and you're safe.

That being said, everyone at Instacart would agree with you -- secret markups suck, which is why we built this feature to tell you which stores are priced the same as in-store. The unknown markups don't exist because some guy in a smoky room twirling his mustache hatched a devious plot, it is just structural. The user interface should have reflected this reality earlier, and it didn't, but now it does. We really do want to be as transparent as possible with our prices.

If you have any specific feedback I can take it directly to the consumer products team, or you can email feedback@instacart.com. They love feedback, positive or negative :)

hpvic03··on AmazonFresh rolls out mandatory $299/year ‘Prime Fresh’ grocery membership
Engineer from Instacart here.

As of earlier this year, marked up stores and non-marked up store are now very clearly listed on the site.

hpvic03··on YC Research
This is great.

I always considered getting a PhD and becoming a researcher, but decided to remain an engineer for the time being because I've heard so much about how the academic research system is broken, both with politics and low pay.

If this model works, it might not only help existing researchers be more productive, but it might motivate other people considering this career to actually do it instead of other careers.

hpvic03··on Alda: A music programming language
Can this language produce an actual grand staff notation, e.g. in a pdf format?

I'd like to use to write down compositions, but it would need that feature to be useful. If I could write down compositions in Vim that would be killer.

hpvic03··on Show HN: FundingHunt – Daily Updates on Startup Funding
Why not use the CrunchBase API rather than depending on people to submit funding news?

I would like to be able to subscribe to certain VC firms or angels to see what they've invested in and get a daily or weekly digest.

I actually built this thing myself, but CrunchBase recently made their API more restrictive so it doesn't work anymore.

hpvic03··on Ask HN: Do I give up now?
I think if you're looking for an idea and constantly switching from one project to the next then you've got the wrong mindset. Take the time to solve a real problem for a group of people, and find an authentic way to reach them. Pick something that you personally care about, that you would work on for free (because you will be for a while).

My indicator for successful startups is:

1. They solved a real, significant problem for me (if it doesn't help me then it's not generic enough and then there's not a big enough market, though this does not apply to enterprise startups).

2. I use their product/service every day (or at least once a week)

3. What they built is cool

Does your work fit that criteria?

And if you're doing it to get rich, you'll have better luck joining an early stage startup that's clearly taking off. The first 100 employees at Google and Facebook made way more money than the median startup entrepreneur.

hpvic03··on Ask HN: Internships for a 13-year-old?
Socializing in high school != socializing in an industry.

I think you'd learn more about how to socialize with adults in an industry by hanging out with them... at work. And these are the people you want to get along with anyways.

hpvic03··on Ask HN: Internships for a 13-year-old?
Many people who are the best at what they do started their careers very early. If someone wants do that then I don't think you should discourage them. Being satisfied with your career and work over the span of a lifetime because you spent the time to get good at it is more valuable a few years of goofing off.

Besides, age 13-14 is when you start high school, and that's when things get real anyway. If you intend to apply to a top school you need any advantage you can get, and work experience in jobs that are actual careers is impressive.

hpvic03··on Lockitron Announces the $99 Bolt, a Deadbolt You Can Unlock with Your Phone
What does the other side of the lock look like? That's not clear from the website.

Also, what happens if your phone is dead? This is a serious issue that's not mentioned anywhere on the website. It would be nice if there was a physical key backup.

hpvic03··on Show HN: Nvestly, Never Invest Alone
This is really cool, nice work.

It feels to me like all the online brokerages are stuck in the dark ages. I'd like to be able to trade on a nice modern site with good reporting tools. Maybe you guys could build that eventually. I'm sure in the meantime I will be interested in watching people who are doing really well -- that information is extremely interesting to me.

hpvic03··on Ember Tutorial
To persist data you'll want a backend. That's a fairly important piece of any application which is why I included it in the tutorial. You could ignore the Rails parts of the tutorial and create your own backend.
