hpen··on Why the CrowdStrike bug hit banks hard
We blame car manufacturers for defects from suppliers, but we don't blame platform manufacturers (Microsoft) for holes in their architecture?
hpen··on Why the CrowdStrike bug hit banks hard
This is a valid opinion and I don't know why you were downvoted (well other than the hacker news bubble mindset (or mindless-set).

How is Microsoft not to blame, it's their product? We wouldn't blame a Toyota supplier for a failure in a car, but we somehow segment that in the software world?

hpen··on Show HN: Zerox – Document OCR with GPT-mini
Oops guess I'm not sippin' the koolaid huh?
hpen··on Show HN: Zerox – Document OCR with GPT-mini
Yay! Now we can use more RAM, Network, Energy, etc to do the same thing! I just love hot phones!
hpen··on Automerge: A library of data structures for building collaborative applications
What do you mean? Svelte isn’t a language
hpen··on Researcher finds flaw in a16z website that exposed some company data
Actually, I think entitlement is the wrong word. Maybe more like "window washing panhandler who's upset because you don't give them money for their service"
hpen··on Researcher finds flaw in a16z website that exposed some company data
Ha my actual question was downvoted. I guess people are as entitled as they say.
hpen··on Researcher finds flaw in a16z website that exposed some company data
Wait, do hackers feel entitled to money for finding security holes, even if there was never any signal of such reward?
hpen··on Automerge: A library of data structures for building collaborative applications
Found it https://github.com/automerge/automerge/blob/b8f88cacc6f46f92...

Vector clock. Why not a Hybrid Logical Clock?

hpen··on Automerge: A library of data structures for building collaborative applications
Why a language and not a framework? I mean some langs even implement half their functionality in std libraries rather than part of the lang (as a preference actually).

I see their being overhead and what not that would make it very domain specific and less appealing for anything that doesn't need collaboration.

hpen··on Automerge: A library of data structures for building collaborative applications
What type of clock is used by this library?
hpen··on Ask HN: Performance of Apple Sillicon vs. ThinkPads (Or Other Linux Laptops)
I wanna preface by saying I'm a huge linux fan, but a couple things:

1. I'm not sure what kernel optimizations for CERN's x86 machine have to do with ARM Apple Silicon. I get that in abstract improvements "could" trickle down from that but once again without any performance benchmarks that is the definition of speculation.

Yeah, improvements and bug fixes get upstreamed but not every algorithm is going to optimized for the architecture of Apple Silicon.

hpen··on Ask HN: Performance of Apple Sillicon vs. ThinkPads (Or Other Linux Laptops)
Can someone say baseless speculation?
hpen··on I Hope Rust Does Not Oxidize Everything
Interesting, it's mostly concepts and architecture in my head, and less lines of code.
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Maybe he is a chatbot!
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
A better analogy: "it's like (engineering) a car without fully understanding how the engine works."
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Well if the implication here is that me and everyone else commenting in the subthread is crazy, i suppose that means you do like to argue but just not with logic.
hpen··on Gpu.cpp: A lightweight library for portable low-level GPU computation
Any performance metrics vs Vulkan, metal, etc?
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Clearly he is so special to our universe, and has such a solid reputation, that arguing with words and logic is beneath him. Duh.
hpen··on Ask HN: Why does no one seem to care that AI gives wrong answers?
This is a false line of thinking. Karpathy say's hallucinating is what makes LLMs special. LLMs are way more like compression with a mix of hallucination rather than anything else.
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Prestigious projects don't mean you don't have to actually argue with logic now
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Well finally you're trying to use some logic and critical thinking. Thank God.

For real you're as bad as me because you also reply and can't stop.

I'm not hearing voices, I'm talking about the context of the OPs question.

hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Your sense that an LLM being able to write a simple python script is good enough to replace engineers makes you reek of being a junior engineer. How do you justify such extrapolation?

Your original comment provides zero baseline for how long the bluetooth script would have taken to write without chatGPT, with or without experience.

hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
You too! You bring strong arguments btw ;)
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Ha I have strong opinions from experience, not feelings.

I think so too but the OP is asking about chatGPT and relatively near term tech (given the context of his question).

Your naivety about software engineering is not uncommon but it is misinformed.

hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
It’s also about risk. How fragile is your code base? You have no idea of its weaknesses without thinking through the implementation details.
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Nope. My point is that production apps at organizations are a lot more complicated than a toy app built from scratch by ChatGPT. Fundamentally, do you think ChatGPT will ever be able to produce accurate patch files? Thing is it doesn’t count newline characters or anything to specify the diff, it’s statistical inference and fails at this task.

Also, no one actually knows that LLMs with transformers will continue to scale. Every AI ceo says yes but that can’t be said without bias.

hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
Ok now ask ChatGPT to produce a git patch file for your production repo and see how far that gets you. Not far.
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
But honestly I hope everyone keeps pushing this “AI is gonna replace programmers” stuff. Will keep people out of the field and my technical chops will have higher market value.
hpen··on Ask HN: Does ChatGPT/AI enable anyone to code?
I think ChatGPT is just the next level search engine for coding. It doesn’t fundamentally change anything about building complex systems, just another tool.

I would never ship a production app built with ChatGPT. I need to know the intricacies of my code base. I wanna fix bugs in my head based on the architecture and specific implementation details. I need to know how fragile or not my system is and its weaknesses
