hpb42··on Mercedes EVs can go faster for $60 a month
> If a car company decides to artificially cripple their car so that you feel forced to pay extra; another car company is going to see that as a golden opportunity to undercut.

Or to join forces in a cartel.

This was the reasoning behind the Phoebus Cartel[0], although in the business of incandescent lamps not car manufacturing. Osram, Philips, Tungsram, Associated Electrical Industries, ELIN, Compagnie des Lampes, International General Electric, and the GE Overseas Group were part of this organization to reduce the longevity of lamps to increase sales. It is a fascinating story :(

hpb42··on Sōzu – HTTP reverse proxy in Rust for immutable infrastructures
If I understood it correctly, if you change the code of SŌZU, you need to open-source not only your fork, but everything that can be reached/connected to by SŌZU.

Google has a policy against using APGL internally, nor in your company equipment[0].

The primary risk presented by AGPL is that any product or service that depends on AGPL-licensed code, or includes anything copied or derived from AGPL-licensed code, may be subject to the virality of the AGPL license. This viral effect requires that the complete corresponding source code of the product or service be released to the world under the AGPL license.

hpb42··on 'Ultramassive' black hole discovered – bigger than the majority of galaxies
The article is about the Abell 1201 black hole. The paper referenced in the article is paywalled though[0].

And Wikipedia has a List of most massive black holes[1]. Quite fascinating, although the list is about their masses and not their sizes.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but the Abell 1201 black hole and the others in the list are near the theoretical limit of a black hole's mass (5 * 10^10 solar masses).

hpb42··on Ask HN: Contractors, what is your hourly rate?
> project fees plus monthly retainers

I am new to the contractors game, could you elaborate a bit more on what that means?

Do you charge hourly + some monthly flat rate? Is it for short term contracts?

hpb42··on Memory safety for the world’s largest software project
This sounds really interesting! Is the source available somewhere?
hpb42··on Quick fixes to your code review workflow
You can also configure git to fetch the GitHub PR branches[0]. Add this line to your .git/config:

    fetch = +refs/pull/*/head:refs/remotes/upstream/pr/*
This has to be done in each repository you have checked out locally, but maybe it is possible to also have this done globally. But I never tried to do it.

hpb42··on Understanding the bin, sbin, usr/bin, usr/sbin split (2010)
ArchLinux symlinks /sbin, /bin and /usr/sbin to /usr/bin. And also /lib, /lib64, /usr/lib64 to /usr/lib:

$ ls -la / | grep -e bin -e lib lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Dec 6 23:41 bin -> usr/bin lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Dec 6 23:41 lib -> usr/lib lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Dec 6 23:41 lib64 -> usr/lib lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Dec 6 23:41 sbin -> usr/bin

hpb42··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
I got a new laptop for work that has: 1 USB3 type A, 1 USB-C, 1 Thunderbolt4 in USB-C connetor, 1 HDMI, 1 audio jack, and 1 Power connector. No ethernet. My boss bought me a caldigit element hub to be able to connect mouse and keyboard... We were all disappointed when we realized there was not enough "normal" USB ports.
hpb42··on Ask HN: Single-person creations that have stood the test of time?
I believe ImageMagick[0] fits the criteria.

There's even an XKCD[1] about it.

hpb42··on Thunderbird’s New Home (2020)
I've been using Claws-mail[0] for a couple of years now. It is ugly, but gets the job done. It is simple, can index tens of thousands of email, has native support for GPG, and, most importantly, it's super lightweight.

Downsides: bad support for HTML emails; calendar integration is not good; it is single-threaded, so you can't do a lot of things simultaneously (like fetching work e-mail and browsing personal mails), but this is not a huge problem IMO.

hpb42··on LXC vs. Docker
I did not know there were so few distros packaging LXD [0]. It does not come as a surprise that Canonical would not endorse non-snapded LXD though. And it is sad.

What do you mean by "After 2 warm-ups"? I've seen this expression in the context of benchmarks before and it puzzles me.

Does it mean you are doing this operation enough times to trick the kernel to cache everything in RAM? Or you run it 3 times and chose the fastest timings?

hpb42··on It is 2018 and this error message is a mistake from 1974

hpb42··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
For arrays/matrices I'm falling back to Fortran. It has builtin support to matrix/vector multiplication (and other operations of course). There's no need to install other libraries, or to deal with virtualenvs, or package managers. Fortran is not that sold creepy thing from the 70s anymore, Fortran90 (and later) is pretty elegant IMO.

hpb42··on Ask HN: What are the three most expensive tools/services that you use?

hpb42··on All C++20 core language features with examples
Exactly.

Also, i'm terrified of this idea of "library-manager download code from internet and run on this machine", without all the tests and QA of individual dependencies like we have in Linux packages.

Also, i've seen so many times people adding dependencies to projects because they did not know the standard library already had what they needed. I get it, it is easier to "pip install foo" than to look for "foo" in the docs. I don't think any sane person can learn everything that is available in the standard library, but searching the docs is always insightful.

hpb42··on The sound of the dialup, pictured (2012)
Is there an audio recording of "modern" handshakes somewhere?
hpb42··on Why are most climate models in Fortran?
C++ is widely used for High Energy Physics. The ROOT framework [0], developed at CERN, is mostly C++.

I'd be tempted to say that Rust could be used as well, but the equivalent of MPI and OpenMP for Rust is still not as fast as in C++/C/Fortran.[2] That's easy to understand: there are decades of investment in MPI/OpenMP for C/C++/Fortran, and Rust is not there yet.

Also, in some cases where high throughput is needed, languages with garbage collector are not suited. In this scenario, deterministic execution time and deterministic latency are very important. Not directly related to HPC, but Discord migrated from Go to Rust for this reason[2].

hpb42··on Ask HN: Is abuse from supervisors as common in industry as in academia?
There are abusive people in academia and there are abusive people in industry. And there are respectful people in academia and in the industry.

I had the displeasure of choosing an abusive supervisor. And I left him, started fresh with a different supervisor, and everything worked out nicely. That is possible, although people don't talk much about that. During my studies, I heard about some very abusive supervisors from colleagues, and also heard about good supervisors as well. In one of my exchanges, i worked with an awesome supervisor. She was brilliant, respectful, always helping, and invited us to many outside activities like hiking and other stuff.

My first job outside academia had an environment that was more toxic than with my abusive supervisor. Not only the boss had some "weird" behavior, but also the coworkers were complicit and accepted that as "standard boss behavior". Now I work at a different company, with an awesome environment.

I know people happy in academia, and I know people happy to have left it. I also know people unhappy in industry :/

hpb42··on Spy pixels in emails have become endemic
As an end user, what can I do to help reducing tracking in e-mails?

Politely sending and email to Company Foo? What are good arguments to write in there, so that _anyone_ working in Company Foo can understand the problem?

I don't expect companies to start using plain text in emails, although I'd love that...

hpb42··on Ask HN: Do you wake up with anxiety?
> I want to do a pulse check to see how common it is for folks working in tech, to suffer from this level of anxiety.

Common or not, if you have anxiety/depression it means something is not right.

If you can afford, try therapy, go to a psychologist. It is better to get professional help than to get random free advice from the internet. And also: eat properly, sleep properly, exercise properly...
