hox··on New Snowden Docs Indicate Scope of NSA Preparations for Cyber Battle
You are living with blinders on if you don't think every state in the world has espionage programs for both offensive and defensive purposes.
hox··on My Amazon S3 Mistake
There is, hence the emails and phone calls that were missed.
hox··on My Amazon S3 Mistake
And please for the love of all that is secure, use IAM roles. Even for your personal things. it's not that hard and you can stop things like this from happening even with the auth credentials.
hox··on Facebook’s First Female Engineer Speaks Out on Tech’s Gender Gap
Replace "women" with "a diverse team", and really that's what she said. And in my experience she is correct.
hox··on From hacker to hospice in seven weeks
If anything, this article points out one thing to me: spend your time doing what you love. If that's work, great. If you love your family or life outside of work more, do whatever you can to spend more time with them. Sacrifice by finding a stable, well-paying yet not "exciting" job that enables you to avoid 12 hour workdays that are normal.

If your significant other says you are spending too much time at work, that means you should make the choice over what is more important. You always have a choice.

hox··on Sherlock Holmes Debugging
Also known as the "Five-Whys" elsewhere.

hox··on Lean Recruitment – Hire faster and better
So the comments are focusing on the candidate, but how exactly does this reduce the "expensive" up front cost of resume review, phone screens, and on-site interviews cited? The described process still performs reviews and screens, but instead of 1-4 or so man hours per employee of engineering time "wasted" during interviewing, you are instead slowing the entire team down for multiple days to effectively onboard temporary employees.

Sorry, this makes next to no sense from the candidate's viewpoint or the company's.

hox··on Tim Cook Speaks Up
I'm not trying to get into semantics. I attend Catholic mass every Sunday and identify as part of the Catholic community, but that doesn't mean I let centuries old teachings dictate my own personal beliefs. That is the difference between church and faith. If I were to make the same statement Tim made, I would be making it from my viewpoint, not that of you or anyone else.
hox··on Tim Cook Speaks Up
Who is to say that one's definition of "God" must conform to what a church teaches?
hox··on Move Fast and Break Nothing
Twilio follows a similar model for large scale changes, but at a distributed service level using a shadow proxy (https://github.com/twilio/shadow) rather than having parallel code paths.
hox··on Show HN: Pagerbot, a chat bot for managing PagerDuty on-call schedules
Not everyone wants to use hubot. I actually think having a communally maintained bit as part of an engineering group can be kinda fun, but to each their own.
hox··on Twilio Adds Low-Cost, Two-Way MMS Picture Messaging to Its API Cloud
All US Twilio numbers.
hox··on Show HN: Traffic.wtf, all-emoji URL shortener weekend project
This project and most emoji projects I've seen are meant as light-hearted takes on an existing product. The added benefit of a URL shortened service is the extended character alphabet to choose from, thus shorter links.

Of course you can use all of Unicode for this for an even larger set of possible chars, but you lose the "fun" aspect.

In the end, it's about not being too serious about things.

hox··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
Very good point, and I agree that the hiring manager in place tends to be the biggest cause of bias in hiring decisions. However, more mature organizations tend to either have more checks in place or more formalized HR processed that can hopefully reduce the effect of bias in hiring.

Definitely not saying it's perfect; oversight can only all so much.

hox··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
True of course, but with startups this is more of a necessary evil; for larger organizations it is a sign of engineering dysfunction.
hox··on Myths About Working as an Engineer at a Startup
Things not addressed that I think are important:

1. Salary. Startups always seem to offer lower salary in return for said equity.

2. Career development. Startups demand that you build somewhat hacks solutions for the sake of time. In many instances you might not get the opportunity to learn how to do things right. Too much of this and you get used to building hacks products.

3. 80-hour work weeks might not be the norm, but what about 60 hour work weeks? that's a deal bresker for some.

4. Diversity. Startups are notorious for hiring people just like the founders.

hox··on Dissecting Message Queues
Not only that, but there is no attempt made to gather metrics based on similar configurations / feature sets. The author specifically mentions that the AMQP systems persist their messages to disk by default, and this was the configuration used for the testing. How, then, are the "benchmarks" even comparable to the ephemeral message queues that don't provide any sort of persistence? Why wasn't persistence turned off to provide more comparable tests?

And why were nanomgs / 0mq even included?

I despise articles like this. They only serve to clutter up useful communication on such technologies.

hox··on The App I Used to Break Into My Neighbor’s Home
You seem to only care about theft. What about restricting access to those who have other reasons to break into someone's property? Spurned lovers, coworkers, friends you can't really trust... The kind of people who would actually have access to take photographs of your keys to begin with?
hox··on Customizing Redis – Adding Graphs
Nice! Redis really does have a great code base to work with. I previously wrote on article on adding a custom datatype, essentially walking step by step through each necessary modification.

If interested, this article can be found here: http://www.starkiller.net/2013/05/03/hacking-redis-adding-in....

hox··on I Sold My Startup for $25.5 Million
Even with revenue projections and being able to work back to personal gain, employees often aren't privy to liquidation preferences and the variety of classes of stock that has been handed out. If an employee has 1% of a company and the company sells for $100m, the employee rarely sees $1m.
hox··on Manifesto for Async Software Development
not in the sf Bay Area. I swear every company out here requires one to show face 10 hours a day.
hox··on How I Feel as Young Father Involved in Early-stage Startup
Or 5, or get up early and be done even earlier.
hox··on When TDD Doesn't Work
nonsense. I'm not an advocate of large process by any means, but a number of principles of the agile movement can benefit developers of any skill level or experience. and more importantly it can help a team collectively more than it can help the individual. the trick is imposing these principles carefully, which almost every agile leader I've met fails to do.

I've never seen anything wrong with more communication between stakeholders and adapting a solution to meet their ever-changing needs.

hox··on Ruby Security Have You Not
You sir are a saint. Dealing with net_ldap and AD was the bane of my existence for a while.
hox··on Ruby Security Have You Not
This can be said of any open source library, but it is unfortunately true that the average Ruby gem seems to be more hobby-grade than enterprise-grade.

The fact of the matter is, if you are developing an application and are integrating 3rd-party code, always pay attention to what that 3rd-party code is, how well-maintained it is, and how the project has responded to bugs and vulnerabilities in the past.

hox··on Get Poached
but but but Steve Newcomb's post from the other day states "getting a full salary is generally not a good dependency - if it is, you've got bigger problems with that candidate."

sorry, had to. absolutely crazy that developers latch on to jobs where they are abused and overused for a mythical carrot.

hox··on Atlassian Valued at $3.3 Billion
Great to see both workday and veeva mentioned here, both tri-valley software companies proving that success can come in the Bay Area outside of Silicon Valley and San Fran.
hox··on Show HN: Siri, open the garage
An example using a Raspberry Pi and SiriProxy, which actually handles more than just the "open" command from a year or so back: http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=25118.
hox··on America's Young Adults at 27: Results From a Longitudinal Survey Summary
You're not alone, but I agree that it is odd when the age of your life-stage peers trends much higher than your own. getting married early on and having kids seems to be something many people don't consider until their 30s now.
hox··on Amazon Fire TV
