howlin··on Meat made from recycled carbon dioxide
Instead of elaborate carbon capture infrastructure, it seems more straightforward to just use photosynthetic organisms like algae. Either engineer algae to make the proteins you want, or engineer yeast or some other microbe that can take the products of algae and convert to these proteins.

Honestly it sounds like a needless and impractical gimmick.

howlin··on Three Arrows Capital reportedly facing insolvency
Seems like the entire capitalization of crypto is around $1 trillion. The total value of housing in the USA is a bit over $40 trillion. So that should give you some sense of scale of the crypto market versus other markets that pose systematic risks.
howlin··on The big six matrix factorizations
Now apply them to the data used to identify the "Big Five" personality traits! This is an interesting application of factor analysis/matrix factorization:

howlin··on A plastic bag’s 2000-mile journey
It seems like the only sane way to make use of refuse mixed plastic is to incinerate it for energy. Perhaps as peaker plants that can be brought online when there isn't sufficient renewable energy to meet demand.

Burning plastic is clearly dirty, but with sufficient heat and airborne pollutant scrubbers I doubt it's any worse than coal.

howlin··on How to use weekends for mental health
It's trivial to hire house cleaners to come in once or twice a week, and to keep things minimally tidy in between.
howlin··on Antarctic sea ice hits lowest minimum on record
The extreme seasonal summer/winter swings in light levels makes this undesirable, independent of the temperature.
howlin··on The underground economy of solitary confinement
|After I am financially independent, I want to try to get state/federal funding so that I can go back to prisons and teach programming AND partner with companies to have jobs/interviews lined up for release dates.

There are certainly NGOs who will help you with this mission. Do some research and let us know.

howlin··on City Generator
"watabou" is already famous for Pixel Dungeon, one of the best Rogue-like games for mobile. It's inspired many forks as well.

This project looks to be on the way to another interesting contribution to OSS.

howlin··on Why punish a scientist for defending science?
One somewhat cynical way of describing the mentality at play in more militant wokeism is to recognize that a lot of people consider social capital to be a zero sum game. A power struggle. In order for one faction to make advancement, another faction must be weakened. Dialogue from this perspective is not going to be productive if there is no common interest. This perspective on social power is by no means a recent invention. Even within science itself it's undeniable that there are power struggles. Plank famously said that "science advances one funeral at a time".

It's very jarring to find yourself on the receiving end of something that appears to be an unprovoked attack. And you might be totally justified in that belief. But it's worth considering for a moment if there might be some amount of truth in what they are saying. If you are living your whole life inside an exclusionary fortress of social power, you might be totally unaware of the battles happening outside the walls.

howlin··on The main thing about Phenylacetone meth is that there's so much of it
Yes, the degree "free will"/willpower factors into a decision is much more of a spectrum than a binary. I'm just pointing out that drug addiction shifts your decisions away from the free will end of the spectrum.
howlin··on The main thing about Phenylacetone meth is that there's so much of it
Drugs destroy your ability to make good decisions. They are essentially hot wiring the brain's reward circuits which directly feed back into the brain's decision making processes. Most obviously, it's almost never the case that addicts consciously choose to become addicted.
howlin··on PinePhone Pro Announced
I have one from a year or so ago, and it just collects dust right now. If I understood how utterly unusable it was and how unusable it would continue to be, I would have preferred to just donate to Pine's organization rather than have them send me clutter.
howlin··on Death of the Calorie (2019)
> Cardio is important for overall health, but you aren't going to burn enough calories for it to be a major source of weight loss.

You need to build the stamina to keep it up. But assuming you can maintain a moderate to strenuous pace for 30 minutes you can burn off a small meal's worth of calories. An hour of moderate running can be around 600 calories for an adult male.

howlin··on Dogs distinguish human intentional and unintentional action
> When I try to pet her, she does not appreciate it by often trying to scratch me.

Animals will often misinterpret an attempt to pet with an attempt to grab. It helps a lot to attempt to pet with the back of your hand rather than your palm and fingers.

howlin··on Single cortical neurons as deep artificial neural networks
Brain tissue needs to optimize for a lot of things other than computational efficiency. It needs to stay operational for decades with minimal replacement of parts and it needs to be resilient to a fair amount of bumps, diseases and chemical injury. Silicon chips don't have to be build to survive these conditions so it's possible they can be much more efficient at the computational aspect.
howlin··on Probably Approximately Correct – A Formal Theory of Learning (2014)
PAC is great in some ways because it is one of the best ways of proving things about what you can do with finite samples. But practically the bounds will mostly be too weak for an application, and empirically measured error rates will usually be much better than the PAC bounds.

There are two other good features of a PAC analysis of a problem that often get overlooked:

* you need to precisely define a model for how your data is being generated. This helps you reason about the data source a little better and to quantify your expectations of what you are expecting to see. You can turn this into anomaly detection by identifying highly improbably input data to your model.

* doing a PAC analysis will give you a principled method of ranking different methods for modeling the same data. Without anything else to go on, a ML algorithm with a better PAC bound is probably a better first choice than an algorithm with a weaker or no PAC bound.

All of this provides a better methodology to approaching a new model than the typical one of building random deep learning architectures and then pulling the slot machine arm to see if you hit a jackpot.

howlin··on Probably Approximately Correct – A Formal Theory of Learning (2014)
> (independent from other estimates)

That little phrase is doing a lot of work in your theorem :)

howlin··on Machine Learning Is a Marvelously Executed Scam
| it doesn't understand the data it has and doesn't have individuals who have the competencies to hire analysts to help them;

Yeah, this is common and often explains why ML projects fail. ML won't magically understand data for you. And if you don't understand the data you are feeding into your ML pipeline, you will almost certainly have a garbage-in-garbage-out situation on your hands.

howlin··on Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger life cycle assessment (2018)
It seems hard to make sense of your objection here other than as a statement that past acts that might be considered wrong were how we got to where we are today. I don't think it's unreasonable to acknowledge our history while also recognize we shouldn't repeat the wrongs of the past.
howlin··on The Discipline of DE (1978) [video]
So far the comments here lack much context. The film here is what I believe is a student project of Gus Van Sant who went on to be a professional movie director. The narration is from William Burroughs, who's most famous for "Naked Lunch".

One interesting fact about Burroughs is that he was a chronic drug abuser and managed to shoot his wife during some sort of drug fueled accident. The message in this little piece can be easily interpreted as Burroughs trying to analyzing his own mistakes that lead to her death.

This is really just scratching the surface of how odd and complex Burroughs' life and psyche are. If you are a fan of surrealism, the beatnik movement or other larger than life writers like Hunter S Thomson, it's worth giving his work a chance.

howlin··on Kelly Criterion
Kind of. Most simple models for continuous payoffs will assign a nonzero probability to losing all your wealth or your wealth going negative. The Kelly bet size for any thing with a nonzero chance of "ruin" is zero.
howlin··on Kelly Criterion
Kelly can work if you can properly model your uncertainty over the probability of outcomes and take this into account. You can either do some sort of Bayesian averaging over your posterior belief of the risk, or you can use the pessimistic side of the confidence interval of the actual risk probability.
howlin··on Toxic people could become a reality, scientists researching snake venom say
There are tradeoffs, and in many situations machines have a clear advantage over biological organisms.

In aviation and space, there are serious issues in keeping biological organisms alive due to oxygen levels, pressure changes, and G forces. A purely autonomous system would be able to be more maneuverable in more environments than any system that also needs to keep a meat bag alive.

The other thing machines are great at is patience. Land mines can remain operational for decades, just waiting for their opportunity to detonate. Biological organisms have much higher passive maintenance costs.

howlin··on Venus could have been habitable for billions of years (2019)
Venus has lost almost all of its atmospheric hydrogen. Teraforming a planet like this to sustain life would be quite a challenge.

Here's an excerpt from the wikipedia page ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terraforming_of_Venus )

Difficulties include the fact that the production of organic molecules from carbon dioxide requires hydrogen, which is very rare on Venus. Because Venus lacks a protective magnetosphere, the upper atmosphere is exposed to direct erosion by the solar wind and has lost most of its original hydrogen to space.

howlin··on Red seaweed supplementation reduces enteric methane by over 80% in beef steers
The problem is the millions to billions of people who are living in areas that will become virtually uninhabitable due to temperature changes and sea level rise. The first way climate change will seriously negatively impact humanity is through geopolitical conflict and a massive refugee crisis.
howlin··on Texas was minutes away from months-long power outages, officials say
> Hell I'd run on an infrastructure platform if I had any idea how. (And of course the means to run.)

All that is required is to know there is a problem and to judge who is likely to have a workable solution if you seek them out.

Politicians don't know anything about technical issues. A good politician's strength is in knowing when to defer to experts and to judge who is a good expert.

howlin··on The Miyawaki Method: A Better Way to Build Forests? (2019)
There is some interesting thinking to be done on "native" versus "adapted" when it comes to planning new forest. It's a reality that the climate is changing and there are many introduced pest species that are all drastically changing the landscapes. On the Pacific coast, the combination of drought, sudden oak death disease and pine beetles are rapidly changing the flora and also the fauna when food and shelter disappears.

When you plant a new forest today, do you try to preserve the native species or do you anticipate what species will thrive in the area 20-50 years from now?

howlin··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
I mostly agree with your point, but it has to be said that poker players are creating entertainment value for each other. Even if the cash portion of the game is zero or even negative sum.
howlin··on Meals based on vegetable protein sources (beans and peas) are more satiating (2016)
Try a grocery that carries Taiwanese (most asian grocers) or Mexican food. These places usually have it for sale cheap.
howlin··on 2-Acre Vertical Farm Run by AI and Robots Out-Produces 720-Acre Flat Farm
Anywhere near the rustbelt is going to need their soil thoroughly tested for contamination. But maybe that's not too big a deal when you amortize the cost over the entire life of a farm.
