howlett··on Ask HN: What's your backup setup?
I used to have a subscription to crashplan but that wasn't flexible (or cheap) enough when you try to backup multiple machines/phones.

Now I have a raspberry pi with an encrypted USB drive attached where I sync all files from laptops/desktops/phones/truecrypt-drives (I have an instance of pydio-cloud running too).

Then, once a week (or once a day depending on the folder) I sync everything to rsync.net.

howlett··on Ask HN: How do I break through the plateau in touch typing speed?
I never took lessons in touch typing and I learned to do it by simply spending too much time on the computer. I think the keyboard plays a big role as well, on a laptop I'm usually around 55-60wpm and on my desktop around 75-80wpm.

Also, when you type try to look/think at the _next_ word from the one you're currently typing, I've found that works for me.

howlett··on Ask HN: Mobile phone for pragmatists
I have an S5 mini which I use for pretty much the same stuff (some browsing, music and messaging). I think you can get one for less than €200 online (I got mine for €250 about 2 years ago).

Pros: Waterproof, good size, replaceable battery, SD card.

Cons: Haven't found any supported custom ROMs.

howlett··on Ask HN: Ruby Dev, is moving to PHP a step backward career wise?
You have the opportunity to get paid to learn another language. Give it a go, if you don't like it look for something else and by that time you'll have proof that you can pick up new (not 'recent') languages quickly.

But if they ask you to work with PHP 5.3, leave.

howlett··on Found a 16y old password protected Zip file with my mIRC logs
If it's from 2000 and they were created using WinZip up to v8.0, you can use the Passware Kit and the SureZip recovery as per http://www.lostpassword.com/attacks.htm#surezip

> SureZip attack decrypts Zip archives created with WinZip version 8.0 and earlier in less than an hour regardless of password used to protect it. At least 5 simultaneously encrypted files are required in order to process the archive. Archives created with WinZip are supported.

I used this when it first came out and even with a 60-char password, if there were more than 5 files it could extract them within an hour (sometimes less than 5 minutes).

howlett··on Facebook blocks Crypter which helped users encrypt messages before sending them
Note: I'm the author of a similar tool.

About 2 years ago I wrote Taniger which is a tool that does the same thing but without having to set a preset password for all chats (each message has its own encryption key).

What I found out during these 2 years is that facebook changes it's chat HTML from time to time making the encryption "not work" as it cannot detect the encrypted text. I believe this is what happened with crypter - but I can't be 100% sure as I don't have time today to check if that's the case (I tried installing it but I got an error message when I tried to set its password).

P.S. The Taniger site is currently offline as I'm re-writing it to support PGP encryption, but you can see a demo at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU57xQcAcd0 and get the code at https://github.com/sadreck/taniger

howlett··on 'Hackers' at 20
I pretty much owe everything to this film, it's how I started with computers. I didn't even have one when I watched it but the moment it ended I said "That's what I want to do!". Never became a "hacker" but at least I'm a developer and do something I truly love.

As for the accuracy of the film, I don't really have much to say. I don't expect films to be "too" accurate, if they were they would be called "documentaries". It's cool to see Gibson they way it was and them turning traffic lights green etc.

howlett··on Facebook Chats Are Being Scanned by a CIA Funded Company?
That's the exact reason I built (open-source) Taniger [ https://www.taniger.com ]

howlett··on Ask HN: I'm a first time freelancer with some questions?
I've always wondered why freelance developers compare to plumbers/electricians. You will hire the plumber for 3-4 hours of work and that's it - he'll be on his way. But we will be there for days/weeks/months.

I agree in charging as much as you want if you can solve a problem noone else can. In ~2002 a company had serious database issues with reporting queries running for over 24 hours. So they hired 2 people who charged 600 pounds each an hour. They both worked on the problem for 2 days and brought down the execution time to 3 minutes. In that case yeah, I think they can charge as much as they want.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a developer as well and I know the difference between a 40/h and a 80/h developer. But I believe an hourly rate must depend on how long you'll be working on that project, what you'll be doing as well and how critical it is.

howlett··on Why Programmers work at night (2011)
My view is that we work at nights / early morning because it's quiet. If I could manage to work in a quiet environment during the day, I would.

howlett··on Ask HN: What's your new year resolution?
Not if I do it first!
howlett··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
I'm working on Taniger https://www.taniger.com which is a real time Facebook chat encryption service. Quick demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU57xQcAcd0

Why it's cool: It's open source. It provides REAL real-time encryption without the hassle of "choosing a password", "copy pasting text" etc. Also same logic can be applied to any web chat service.

Code available at: https://github.com/sadreck/taniger

howlett··on You’re infected—if you want to see your data again, pay us $300 in Bitcoins
How is this any different from a virus that wipes (not just deletes) your data? It takes the same amount of time (actually wiping data would be faster) and the result is the same: No data.

Maybe the psychological part of "Oh God the file is there but I can't use it" or the fact it's ransomware?
