hotcrossbunny··on Berners-Lee 'Sorry' for Slashes (2009)
+1 just for the Victor Borge reference. Maybe his first ever appearance on HN? Who knows?
hotcrossbunny··on Online classes are not worth cost of full tuition
Also the self direction is neither taught nor encouraged in the existing model of education
hotcrossbunny··on Online classes are not worth cost of full tuition
This is as much about their lack of historic engagement with new platforms than a fundamental difficulty in adapting the teaching process or content. Universities have been very invested in a high cost model. It's time to change. This like many things we are now discovering are ripe for reform and have lacked only the right catalyst to set a painful but necessary progress in motion.
hotcrossbunny··on Programming at the REPL (2018)
Eric is a super nice guy too. The whole clojure community seems uncommonly decent in my opinion
hotcrossbunny··on Programming at the REPL (2018)
Also check out @reborg and his much underrated YouTube channel. I really hope he can get his book finished
hotcrossbunny··on Programming at the REPL (2018)
If not already mentioned, John Stevenson's Practicalli site and YouTube channel are very good and active. If you are going down the Emacs route for the first time, his contributions in and around and explaining Spacemacs are pure gold
hotcrossbunny··on An English Clergyman’s Advice for Quarantine
I think I could use a little help expanding no 19. "Be firm and constant in the exercise of rational religion. Considering he was a clergyman, whatever did he mean?
hotcrossbunny··on Atari Floppy Disk Copy Protection (2014) [pdf]
Need a bad sector on your disc? No problem, just make a little sticky tape handle on the last edge of the disk in the drive. Open the drive door, leaving the disc in and spinning. Then wait till the computer says go, and pull really hard on the disk against the drive head. I couldn't believe this worked back when I was 10.
hotcrossbunny··on The Weirdly Enduring Appeal of Weird Al Yankovic
THIS is a great little number!
hotcrossbunny··on KafkaHQ
https://operatr.io also expanding into this space
hotcrossbunny··on An Experiment on Code Structure
Can you elaborate a little please? It's unclear to me if you are taking about merging data, code changes, or something else
hotcrossbunny··on The Meritocracy Trap
Summarised conversation I had with my interviewer during a FAANG interview:

Me: So why do you work for FAANG company X? Interviewer: Mainly so that other companies will take me seriously when I'm looking for my next gig

I appreciated the honesty, but disappointed that this was the honest response

hotcrossbunny··on Software design is also about relationships
You are so right regarding the communication challenge. But rising to that challenge can be immensely rewarding, both on a personal level and for growing a vision for the emerging software. Big ups indeed to Kent for writing about stuff like this, but also to all you folk who thought it was worthy reading and commenting on.
hotcrossbunny··on The charm of buying old workstation hardware on the cheap
If you do go for it look out for one with an original battery that may well fall into the battery recall that Lenovo has been running for years. A "dead" battery to the seller may represent a free replacement from Lenovo without any cycles it's clock.
hotcrossbunny··on A Tiling Desktop Environment
Couldnt agree more.....I type on my X220 with 9 cell battery.
hotcrossbunny··on CQRS and Event Sourcing Intro for Developers
... caution.... absolute caution
hotcrossbunny··on Have a personal web site
> Today, anyone can broadcast. But that doesn't mean that everyone should broadcast.

I don't agree here. Perhaps "not everything should be broadcast" might be better?

hotcrossbunny··on Have a personal web site
I would up vote this.

There's a distinction between self promotion and genuine honest expression of who we are, what we presently think is true.

I feel like there is something fundamentally human when people try to do that with each other.

hotcrossbunny··on Have a personal web site
I'm going to opine that you probably are a lot more interesting than might think.

Granted that most people's lives don't serialise down well into a regular stream of weekly episodes. If one can put aside the requirement to "be someone" on the internet, I think maintaining a personal site can be a really great form of self expression, albeit with a few provisos.

hotcrossbunny··on Barking drones used on farms instead of sheep dogs
NZ cracked the robot sheepdog back in the 70s https://youtu.be/T1cmPNYb5Ko
hotcrossbunny··on Harder programming questions do a worse job of predicting outcomes
Broadly speaking, that used to be how design patterns were often treated in interviews. Could you recognise, describe, code, discuss pros, cons and applicability for pattern X in given circumstance. Pretty easy stuff to cram unfortunately, which may be why they may have fallen out of favour in recent times as proxy measure for brains, but depending on the role in question that sort of material was often more likely to be useful in the job than a similarly broad knowledge of algorithms
hotcrossbunny··on Train ferry
I'm about 20 years too late, but me and my boys still think it's flipping cool to drive our car onto a train that goes under the sea to France. Love it.
hotcrossbunny··on Hello Ruby and the magic of programming
Loved the point about needing to think about/teach curiosity for the core ideas of computer science aside from the keyboard and screen
hotcrossbunny··on The State of Agile Software in 2018
Well said!
hotcrossbunny··on How Hillsong Church conquered the music industry
Took me quite a while to work out you weren't talking about pancakes
hotcrossbunny··on Bombing forest fires sounds ridiculous, but is grounded in physics
To add unbounded credence to this idea, it's basically what Macgyver did using nitroglycerin to put out a wellhead fire in the 1985 episode "Hellfire"
hotcrossbunny··on The BASIC Engine
Yay for Atari basic!
hotcrossbunny··on Designing the Perfect Date and Time Picker
A sitter for the kids, good restaurant, fine food and a glass of wine with my...er.. time picker. Oh wait. Damn punctuation!
hotcrossbunny··on Roadmap to becoming a React developer in 2018
Perhaps it's less useful as a roadmap, and more as a React centered map of the frontend tech landscape. Some crossover with Thoughworks Tech Radar perhaps?
hotcrossbunny··on Doing Windows, Part 1: MS-DOS and Its Discontents
