hostyle··on The global talent crunch
My personal anecdote: companies are idiots.

99% of these jobs are city based and require you to relocate. Why? If my work is all done on the internet, why can't my commute be aswell? Why should I have to constantly migrate when I have a perfectly good and happy place to live out in the country? Why isn't remote working catching on more?

All of these claimed shortages are in "IT" which is a very lose term. In Ireland for example something like 50% of IT jobs are phone tech support in foreign languages. We constantly hear of the shortages in this area - yet its low paid and generally requires foreigners to fill the roles. So why not try to hire actual foreigners? In actual foreign countries? Across the internet? Why try to hire expensively educated and irish people with a high cost of living and offer them minimum wage?

The shortage is never in qualified candidates. It's in qualified candidates willing to accept minimum wage. And if all that wasn't bad enough, foreign corporates get to pay extra low tax rates by moving to Ireland, just so they can try to screw the population out of a proper wage packet - all endorsed by the government of course.

I never realised that this was a thing, but now that its been brought up, this is a big issue that I've been facing at work for some time. I'm not a programming rockstar but I am the only programmer at work. And I can't seem to find any other programmers in similar fields in this town. I only found out recently that going to conferences for programming was also a thing, although they seem hugely expensive. I just discovered user groups too, but there isn't one within 100s of miles of me. Still, now that I know these things exist and why people go to them, I have something to work towards.
hostyle··on Things I set on new servers
What stops an attacker running rkhunter --proupd after he/she has installed backdoors in a few of your binaries ? I realise what rkhunter does (searches for common backdoors), but I can't see what advantage the proupd argument adds.
hostyle··on Contracting with the enemy: 80% of DOD contracts in Afghanistan may fund Taliban
Thanks. I was able to read it after a quick refresh and escape key juggle, but that I should have to do so is annoying.

For reference: this is what I get when i click on link (and every previous link from HN to that site)

hostyle··on Contracting with the enemy: 80% of DOD contracts in Afghanistan may fund Taliban
Please don't link to sites that require you to sign-up to read their articles. Yes, you can hack the DOM and remove the pop-over to make it readable, or hit the escape key at the right time, but why bother?

hostyle··on Are you an underpaid developer?
i think you have it pretty good :) 15 years experience here and i'm on the equivalent of 44k USD (small city in europe). i'm not happy with it, but it pays the bills and i have some money left over to have fun now and then. no pension included. no health insurance. i don't have a network and the only jobs going here are all very short contracts, so i'll stick with it while i can.

hostyle··on Show HN: Emails that Self-Destruct and Notify You When Read
Not sure what you guys are defining an email as these days, but all I get is the following text:

"NOTE: This email's content (shown below) will self-destruct after being viewed. -Sent w/ ghostmail <http://www.ghostmailapp.com/>

And nothing else. Plus when I re-open the message I get the same thing.

hostyle··on Version Controlling Wordpress
"I’m presuming you have ssh & root access to the server" - is might be a good idea to start the article with this sentence, rather than ending with it, as the entire story depends on it.
hostyle··on IMF Chief Economist apologizes for being wrong on austerity
dishonesty is part and parcel of the trade in banking and politics. competent people tend to stay away from dishonesty.
hostyle··on Linux is Burning My Laptop
don't bother donating to ubuntu. they don't fix bugs. they just add new "features" instead that break so many other things you forget about the initial bug altogether. try out debian or linux mint or any other distro. ubuntu is for sadists.
hostyle··on A Guided Tour through the Fundamentals of Git
It seems to leave out some important information. Eg. It refers to HEAD many times, but never seems to explain what this is? I can find out what this is easily enough elsewhere, but from my immersion so far I feel that it should be explained.

I really like the site though and have bookmarked it for later, and I will definitely try out the rest of it. Well done and thanks.
