hopelite··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I was just reminded of another glitch in iOS, when typing if you select the left most suggested word, the selection highlight is not only aligned with the rounding and position of the underlying rounded background, it literally overlaps/extends beyond the background. Again... rather gross.

Lobbying is not going to have an effect on that unless you have magnitudes greater pain to dish up than the industry lobbyists have gifts to bear. It's a big circle of mutual gratification and you aren't in it. If you have been lobbying that long with no effect, it's because of that. If you have any information, you should think about taking it to the OMG to see if they are interested, able to do a candid hidden camera thing. That might make a difference if it is done right.

I get your point and think it is a matter of when things are relatively "perfectly" done as in iOS/MacOS, every little anthill seems like an eruption volcano, but let's also not make excuses for some of the rather disgusting issues in Tahoe that Steve Jobs' would have never allowed to ship.

I can't recall them all right off the top of my head, but I waited til 26.2 to update because of all the comments I saw about glitziness, and this resizing issue is just one of the quirks I have noticed are still not resolved; not to mention that my M4 Mac has not crawled and locked up as often as it has since I updated to 26.2. But again, to put it in perspective, that's only been very little hassle compared to what seems to be nothing but misery, suffering, and existential questions suffered by the wretched souls condemned to Windows.

Edit: another issue I have noticed in iOS is that now things like saving bookmarks in Safari is no longer a two step/tap process using long-press, it's a three step/tap process....WHY?? Same with "add to home screen". Also, the long press horizontal context menu (i.e., copy, paste) now does not slide left to reveal more options, it just changes mode to a vertical list. What is going on??? That's sickening...in my opinion. Horizontal, vertical? Pick one.

Second Edit: I just experienced another Tahoe glitch in at least Safari, where hyperlinks become un-clickable and the only way to resolve that is to seemingly restart safari. I don't find that acceptable in Safari of all places.

hopelite··on Eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece (2023)
It wasn’t as much focused on high level information visualization as Dark Sky, but I also still miss the original Wunderground and its precipitation prediction cones and radar features that were accurate down to the second back before it was acquired by the weather channel, where it went to die of neglect.

This topic raises an issue I’ve had in mind for a while, companies are not realizing their true value when they sell out to some exit, as is evident by the fact that the companies Andy what they created end up being taken out behind the shed. If a competitor is willing to pay a certain amount without extreme pain to the point of convulsion or you don’t get air tight contract that prevents killing off the service/product without it remitting back to the founders or being made open source, you are being low-balled.

Taking the Wunderground example, those folks would have ended up owning the weather channel and probably buying or merging with Dark Sky and being the data provider to Apple instead of the Weather Channel characters (in case you don’t know about that entity) owning and killing off their baby.

I’ll at least give you some credit for effort, where the other CIA mush-mind just sent a link to peek CIA-brainwashing central link, but you’re clearly arguing in bad faith because you’re so mentally deranged from the life long conditioning.

But you are a well trained NPC, repeating all the installed “knowledge” you have faithfully, with no ability to even realize the inherent contradictions in your statements and beliefs, largely because what you have been conditioned with like a good mindless NPC is only what the ruling class wants you to know for a fact and then infect others with in places like Reddit. You’re a good zombie infecting and devouring those brains, lacking any ability to recognize you serve those who hate you and you say you hate.

But not matter how angry reality makes you, it does not change whether you hear it from me or not at all.

You are an inherent contradictions, just like the ruling class wants you.

hopelite··on Replit founder Amjad Masad isn’t afraid of Silicon Valley
Considering circumstances all over the West, pretty soon everyone will be “terrorist sympathizers” or a sympathizer of whatever the next enemy boogeyman du jour is of the abusive ruling class. And it’s not your favorite political sport team that is good and never does that, while the other team always does it and is evil. It’s being done in the US and it is being done in the EU as well as in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand; not even to mention Israel, but that can’t be considered the West.

So I realized who you are. Of course it’s you, living so far away from any and all effects or impacts of those people you have no problem thrusting on others. You’re really a bad person just alone for that mentality, a pure narcissist, prescribing for others that which you want nothing to do with just so you can live a delusional fantasy of being a good person.

Again, if you’re so convinced of how wonderful foreign nationals themselves on Americans against their will, how about you just put up a sign welcoming them all to squat in your house and live on your property and freeload off you; instead of prescribing that misery on others. You’re really a sick and evil person, you know that. How about you do unto yourself first, what you do unto others.

hopelite··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
Speaking of middle school mindsets; so by your logic, you should take in how many strangers into your home against your will? …and if your infantile logic has any value, why don’t we just cram every single human on earth into the USA, at your expense of course, right?

What immature peasant-logic people as yourself don’t understand is that no, there is negative net benefit to the common person, while the common American is deprived of that benefit which goes primarily to the richest, and of course the freeloading foreign nationals. Nothing about America has gotten on any controlled measure better without the increase in foreign nationals that have been imposed on the citizens of America against their will.

Is it really as simple as that you have no dignity and are just a self-interested person that enjoys living off the theft of Americans?

And again, your infantile mind cannot seem to grasp that removing a squatter from your home is in fact justified, regardless of how much negative economic impact it would have by depriving that squatter of your assets and living in your home.

Why do you types not understand these basic things? Is it really as basic as that you’re vile? Depraved? Narcissistically callous towards the people you harm? Is it really just because you enjoy making others pay the cost of your decisions while you benefit?

How about we just make you pay for all, every single cost of the foreign nationals that are squatting in America at the profit of the ruling class? Of course not, you would prefer others pay the cost with the misery you cause them.

hopelite··on Eat Real Food
Something this does not actually seem to address is that even our “real food” is also polluted with massive glyphosate. And no, it is also something that is a massive problem in Europe, including meat, which does not get as regulated as vegetables and fruits, so levels can often be even higher.

This young woman did an excellent explanation of the overall state of things in a YouTube video, for anyone that wants an intro. https://youtu.be/s64PNMAK92c

hopelite··on Shipmap.org
Why not simply say “Somali piracy” since that it what is happening and the Somalis are doing as a feature of their nationhood, if one can call it that. The piracy is not a disease afflicting the Somalis, they are perpetrating it just like how a robber robs you, he is not afflicted with robbery against you. Where does that kind of nonsensical mentality even come from. I’m old enough to remember being taught to avoid the passive voice, but these people today are something else with their mentally detached perspective. Are you shooting yourself in your own feet or are you afflicted with being shot in the feet?

Edit: Also, yes, I noted correctly what it said, I’m not sure why you felt the need to act as if a reframing of the claim causes some inaccuracy. But also, neither are the waters afflicted by piracy, it’s still just Somalis engaging in piracy… human’s engaging in piracy, not some disease or animal afflicting the water like a pestilence … just humans choosing to be dirty, as evident by their choice to engage in piracy.

I see people really don’t like seeing Somalis as humans with equal agency and responsibility. That’s the kind of racism that is so pernicious.

hopelite··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
That would not be useful. A far better solution would be to drive up rates to make/force landlords unload properties they could only afford at lower rates and also deport the roughly 30 million foreign nationals that are currently in the USA driving up costs of everything. It’s basic supply and demand, but ironically the immigrant supporters are allied with the billionaires and generally wealthy who profit from piling in ever more people into the same supply of housing and amenities and resources.

I agree, but besides the fact that people overlook that the “C” in LLC is “Corporate” and most private rental investors will have put their real estate in an LLC; is that the real problem at the core is cheap, i.e., devalued money and low lending standards, that has made inefficient and reckless lending and investing possible, essentially the inverse of the BNPL ticking time bomb and the cousin of the housing bubble, i.e., fraud.

With house prices being driven up by reckless lending through a debased currency, you enter a feedback loop where every inflating currencies drive prices higher, which only fuels a further frenzy of lending (including through FOMO) to driver prices higher once again.

hopelite··on The mineral riches hiding under Greenland's ice
It seems a distinction needs to be made between what is being discussed. The ruling class of Europe has cheered it on, even if the peasants complained; but as with so many other things, it’s wholly irrelevant what the peasants want, as you highlight. Americans also were 90%+ opposed to entering WWI and WWII and Vietnam, but that doesn’t change that it was done to serve ruling class objectives.

That’s long been the system; the peasants are manipulated or forced to enter into the meat grinder for the ruling class. See the Ukraine for reference.

But rejoice, soon robots and drones with fight each other instead … or maybe get rid of “useless eaters” more efficiently? It could go either way, or both.

hopelite··on The mineral riches hiding under Greenland's ice

It all hinges on the midterms. Things will become clearer as to how they are going in about the next 6 months or so. There is a real chance that Trump’s faction may have finally caused to much damage for even his base. But never underestimate the impulse for knee-jerk voting or the opposition’s capacity to save its enemy from its own mistakes.

We will see how much that holds this midterm. Trump has wrecked so many things though, it’s hard to tell how things will go, cling on out of desperation or throw him overboard to the sharks?

hopelite··on The mineral riches hiding under Greenland's ice
How do you figure? This show is actually going to be rather boring. The setup has long been completed and Europe will not even squeal all that much.

What, with the Ukraine trap and the narrative hole of Russia marching on Paris, Europe is going to do what against America for taking Greenland? Europe walked itself into a trap and it has no clue it’s even happening.

There is a tiny chance something else is being done, but it’s such a small chance it’s not even worth mentioning. Reality is that this thing we still call America is starving hungry and it smells European blood in the water, and is furiously rubbing its hands over Greenland’s resources and Arctic access. And no, Europeans, the Democrats will also devour you now that they’ve also smelled the money in the Potomac. The Empire must eat.

No, Europe is already drugged, muzzled, and strapped to the table… it will be over soon, Europe.

hopelite··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
It’s an extremely uncomfortable conflict and contradiction between corporate organization, finance “capitalism”, engineering, and creatives; in addition to individual vs group dynamics.

Corporate structure is driven by exploiting and using value for and by a de facto nobility (the c-suite).

Finance “capitalism” seeks to extract value, be it short or long term.

Engineers are motivated by building and creating value.

Creatives are driven by changes for changing’s sake to remain or get a seat at the table.

The uncomfortable reality is that these are inherently conflicting interests that are pulling and pushing each other, but mostly top down.

It’s essentially the “colonialist” exploitative model of existence using creators to leverage rather than extract natural resources, a system that is increasingly not suitable for the modern, technological, commoditized world. AI is a good example of that; it arguably diminishes the value to n degrees of both engineers and creatives, while also leaving the “nobility” and their neo-aristocratic corporate system out in the open exposed as revealing it not only as having no clothes on, but utterly abusive, useless, and downright evil. And no, that’s across the whole political spectrum, not just the opposite of your silly system approved political sport team.

hopelite··on Bison return to Illinois' Kane County after 200 years
Do you recall anything about where those herds are, because I’ve only seen research showing that all treated herds have identifiable cattle DNA, i.e., https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-09828-z
hopelite··on Bison return to Illinois' Kane County after 200 years
Unfortunately there are apparently no real true American bison anymore. A sturdy a while ago showed that all American bison in all of North America have varying degrees of cattle DNA. They’re basically all “beefalo”. They are quite different from cattle in many ways, but they aren’t actually really American bison anymore. Those technically are extinct by objective measures, not all that different than if you breed one dog with a different one, the offspring is neither of the parents and also basically nothing at all until some defining characteristics are identified, reproduced and named at least as a sub-breed.

It seems you may be making assumptions that the formatting and typesetting of any particular edition were intentional or even deliberate on the part of the author, not any number of people, from editors to printers, who could and would have influenced those things for various reasons.

Something I am rather familiar with is brought out by your mention of the German edition/title; that the continental market seems to generally produce books that are far more densely formatted, i.e., smaller font and typesetting, thinner pages, and leading to overall tighter book formats. I actually appreciate it when, e.g., a book is 1/2 the size and weight, and usually also made far more durably; but it will invariably compromise any author intention related to the arrangement of the lettering.

Maybe you can confirm that based on what seems to be your English and German editions of the same novel.

hopelite··on Google Opal
> lost direction years ago.

I’ve never thought of Google as having some clear direction short of having dominated with the pagerank search.

It reminds me of people who invented a thing that is ubiquitous and therefore just sits there printing money all their life, but basically every single other thing they’ve done since then has been at abysmal returns on capital (ie, where they would have been better off just not doing anything and putting it in the money market… their contribution was extremely negative), while they delude themselves into what wonderful success they’ve been because the one-shot invention keeps printing money.

One exception might be YouTube, but if I recall the story correctly, Google was going to shut it down too when one guy (I don’t recall now) made a proposal and single-handedly turned it into the powerhouse it now is. But that’s just dumb luck on Google’s part. That guy could have also just as well have been somewhere else at that pivotal point and Google would have killed off YouTube like it has killed off so many other projects because it lacks the actual competence to follow through with things… everything always remains with a sense of being half-baked.

That reminds me of a thing I stumbled upon a while ago now, that technically speaking several of Google’s core offerings are still designated as Beta projects behind the scenes. I’m not sure why exactly, but even if it’s just an oversight of background clutter, that seems symbolic of Google; the disheveled, disorganized, cluttered personality that has not resolved loose ends smothered in decades of other loose ends.

hopelite··on Google is dead. Where do we go now?
> how the thread was full of bots talking with other bots

I am sure there are some dead giveaways, but how can you be sure about that?

What I have experienced is both going into forums/discussions someone said was bots talking to bots, with no real clear indication by any of the many markers I am aware of that it was in fact bots; and also comments calling responses bots seemingly as a manipulative dismissal in response to something that was not the consensus or commonly approved position.

I say that because my impression is that what is happening is a full on breakdown of civic discussion and conversation as a whole. The internet destroyed IRL public forums (pubs/bars, clubs, etc) and the draconian COVID policies took the death knell to many more, and now bots and the seemingly bigger issue of immediate distrust of everything, seems to also be destroying online conversations of all sorts.

Yes, you’ll be able to have small group meetings and maybe even voice/video only conversations, but that brings a whole host of other systems changes with it, especially as mass surveillance long surpassed anything the worst tyrants of history could have ever even dreamed of implementing. It all seems a shift into unhealthy territory as a civilization in general, including since essentially all western governments cannot be trusted by their own people anymore.

hopelite··on Nicolas Guillou, French ICC judge sanctioned by the US and “debanked”
Unfortunately this seems to be exactly the slope the West is going down after dismissing all the crazy talk of conspiracy theorists who warned of this very thing.

I haven’t seen anything about it here, but another example that is worse because it’s an attack on a private person, is the EU recently sanctioning the former Swiss intelligence officer Jacques Baud, living in Belgium which he now cannot leave, for seemingly, essentially reminding the people of Europe and EU politicians’ of the things they said.

hopelite··on List of domains censored by German ISPs
I wonder what the overlap is of people who find out about one of these URLs, but also does not know how to use a VPN? It seems to me like it would be near zero.

I also wonder if there is some kind of legal requirement for ISPs to engage in that kind of immoral, inhumane, and authoritarian censorship?

I get the “stealing is bad” argument, but far worse and an evil slippery slopes is depriving humans of their human right to free will.
