hoofhearted··on Ask HN: How different is AWS/GCP/Azure in everyday work
If you have an understanding of basic computer science, full-stack development, and the type of different services required to run an app; then you should be fine if you have experience with one versus the other.

Each cloud provider has their different features and quirks, but their underlying services are pretty much the same when it comes to managed servers for computing, data storage, caching, queuing, notifications, email, network policy, etc.

Basically what I am saying is that if you have a deep understanding of AWS or GCP, what each service does, and how billing works; then it just comes down to what each provider names their service, such as RDS or S3.

If you are trying to jumpstart your career with AWS and already have a deep understanding of GCP, then watch some quick AWS cloud practitioner guides on YouTube. If you feel comfortable enough with what they are talking about, then you can go take the cloud practitioner certification test in person next week and add that certification on your resume for less than $200.

hoofhearted··on Ask HN: Advice for leading a software migration?
Original strangler fig post is here: https://martinfowler.com/bliki/StranglerFigApplication.html
hoofhearted··on Ask HN: Advice for leading a software migration?
Follow the strangler fig pattern, and map out every single task that is required in the migration on a whiteboard.

Write tests if you can, and set up a staging environment for V2 that you can setup and tear down easily for battle testing way before going live.

From there, break the tasks up from above into their business domains, and abstract those into new api services that the v1 system can use without any downtime.

For a frontend migration, that’s a whole different story and you would have to provide more details such as “moving from legacy Angular 1 to React 18 while it’s running”.

Same lol.

Seeing this thing show off its tech in the flesh was incredible.

The ability for it too scrub off speed from full tilt at 2000 mph is just beyond imaginable.

If something is chasing you at full speed, and you can just hit the brakes mid air; suddenly the hunter becomes the prey lol

Awesome work dude!

It's great to see how much you have evolved the project.

hoofhearted··on Ask HN: Best way for a Markdown based blog and eBook?
Hey I’ve been working on a little hobby project for easily creating markdown based websites and blogs, using TipTap for the content editor and Git as the storage mechanism.

I’d love to hear what you think!

So are you saying that you would appreciate an editor that saves your posts in plain old html?

Any preference of storing said posts in a database or .mdx markdown file?

hoofhearted··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
Some of the issue here is that it’s actually a pretty nice area here in Baltimore, but our police force is currently understaffed and overworked.

One big issue here regarding policing is that our city elected officials can’t tell the city police force what to do.

You see, when the civil war broke out, the state took control of the police force so that the mayor couldn’t lead a confederate coup.

Flash forward to today, and those powers still have never been returned to the city. The mayor and city council set the police budget, but the chief of police takes direction from a state run board.

So there is a big disconnect between citizens voicing concerns to city council members, and those members only ability is to “talk to the major”.

When the cats away, the mice will play off with some stolen cars.

Fix the cars.

A brand new $60,000 car shouldn’t be so simple to swipe.

They probably spent less time stealing my neighbors car than he did waiting on the credit check to buy the car lol… it’s crazy these days with cars.

Sooo they have been stealing Infiniti's from my area recently with relative ease allegedly by using a Bluetooth obd2 reader connected to an android tablet running a pirated copy of some Nissan service tech software.

Nobody from any of the Infiniti groups is 100% certain how they are doing it, but the best theory out there is above.

Just the other night, a crew of dudes stole 3 Q50’s from my neighborhood with relative ease.

Here is the ring cam video my neighbor posted:

Server Components introduced in React 18

JavaScript is going through another major renaissance, and I see a big future for it.

Traditionally in the last 20 years, Rule number 404 of development has always been “thou shall not use JavaScript on the server side”.

That rule has been flipped on its head in the last year or so, and I see a big future ahead for server side JavaScript.

No, that is where the efficiency in Hero Icons comes from.
hoofhearted··on Comcast says hackers stole data of close to 36M Xfinity customers
Correct.

This is just tinfoil hat speculation of course lol.

When this Citrix zero day was disclosed to the public a few months ago, they mentioned nationstate actors.

It seems that Santa Clause is finishing up his naughty or nice list before rejoining the little lost island of elves with the rest of mainland North Pole.

hoofhearted··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
ReactStrap is npm though.

That was the last time I used bootstrap about 2-3 years ago before going all in on Hero Icons, Headless-UI, and css design tokens and utility classes (Tailwind)

hoofhearted··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
I should mention that I did a study about 6 months ago for a government client, and successfully convinced them to migrate away from Bootstrap 4, Font Awesome, and an in-house patchwork of 10 years of different css styles, to Tailwind CSS and Hero Icons in their mission critical app.

It took many long brain dump sessions, and some help from the U.S. Digital Service and Tailwind themselves.

At the end of the day, Tailwind solved more problems for them than it created.

You wouldn’t think that moving from loading icons via css versus loading them via inline svg’s would make a huge difference; but I found that it can actually reduce a second or two of render time from a legacy and bloated code base.

hoofhearted··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
Tailwind and Hero Icons eclipsed Bootstrap and Font Awesome in NPM downloads a year or more ago.

hoofhearted··on OpenAI suspends ByteDance's account after it used GPT to train its own AI model
P.S. if I was in the position of OpenAI and Sam Altman, and Bytedance kept playing games after we had slapped their hand; I would just “shadow ban” them based off IP and user history, and serve them back garbage results to throw off their models :]

Garbage in = Garbage Out

hoofhearted··on OpenAI suspends ByteDance's account after it used GPT to train its own AI model
You just block their IP’s; Gain intel from internal employees; Have the expensive law firm start sending C&D’s and prepping that law suit.

If you tell someone that they can’t use your product in a certain manner, and then they go to extra lengths to circumvent your measures to gain a profit for themselves, then there is going to be big civil and criminal legal problems.

State sponsored or not; Bytedance has a bank account and business license here in the U.S.

hoofhearted··on Ask HN: What is the best way to get into Physics as a coder?
Hang out at places like Barnes and Noble while you code and drink coffee.

Pick up books from subjects that you think might interest you while you hang. Read a few chapters and decide if the book/subject is for you.

If you really love it; buy the book and take it home.

I did this for a number of years, and absorbed a lot from coding, general physics, quantum mechanics, and even tried to dabble in Astro physics.

hoofhearted··on Plane got to top spot in project management on GitHub in less than a year
I believe one major difference between GH issues and Jira tickets in an enterprise setting is the lack of time estimating and work logs in GH.

I know that a lot of enterprises use the time estimates combined with the work log in Jira to time box sprint cycles based off of how long it took to complete past tickets.

hoofhearted··on My open source project got stolen by a HN user
What’s your goal here mate? To teach me some life lesson or something?

You are coming off as a bit controlling and narcissistic. It’s a bit creepy that you befriended me on discord just to capture screenshots to use against me on your blog, started following and cyber stalking the contributors to my project. I bit more creepy that you went behind me online and made posts “warning” the public about me.

I didn’t do anything wrong. I forked the Outstatic project, which had the Vercel copyright MIT license at the time of forking, and I went with that. There was no author or entity mention in the license, so what was I supposed to do exactly?

I didn’t steal anything, and you are kind of just making up your own rules regarding open source software and giving credit because I didn’t fit in your little perfect world of open source software.

I was not aware that I had to also run any of my videos or social media posts by you first for permission before posting.

You never actually confronted me about any sort of concerns or violations, nor have you given me any chance to make updates or modifications to suit your complaints.

You have instead been on a social media campaign spreading drama and knocking me down to push your own product up.

What kind of credit are you looking for exactly?
