honkhonkpants··on Choke Point of a Nation: The High Cost of an Aging River Lock
Any idea why it would take 20+ years to build? The largest lock in the world was built in 5 years.
honkhonkpants··on Learning to Read X86 Assembly Language
Ok.

It is though.

honkhonkpants··on Learning to Read X86 Assembly Language
I never felt more like stabbing myself than when trying to cipher out exactly which immediate values are possible on ARM, and which are not. X86 I happen to enjoy. It is not "the worst ISA" by any means. It has wonderful code density, which turns out the be very important. There's a reason that x86 won and continues to win.
honkhonkpants··on Supercapacitors Batteries charges in seconds without degrading
Energy density is the energy stored per unit volume or mass. Power density is the same thing, but per discharged per unit time. It is essentially a volumetric statement of the internal resistance of the battery or capacitor. Supercapacitors can be discharged very quickly compared to batteries of the same size, but the same sized battery contains more energy.
honkhonkpants··on Judge blocks Obama overtime rule, putting it in jeopardy
"Working class" people (with incomes below $50k/year) voted for Clinton.
honkhonkpants··on Supercapacitors Batteries charges in seconds without degrading
Well they are about an order of magnitude below state-of-the-art batteries in terms of energy density, and about the same distance above batteries in terms of power density. For phones this doesn't seem to make sense unless you want your iPhone to be 3cm thick. Maybe an application with greater power demands?
honkhonkpants··on Zero-Shot Translation with Multilingual Neural Machine Translation System
Pretty impressive, but even more amazingly their paper is in a single-column format that I can actually read on my computer, instead of pretending that I am reading printed and bound conference proceedings. Truly a giant leap for the field.
honkhonkpants··on Japan issues tsunami warning after magnitude 7.3 earthquake
Authorities are warning of at most 1m above high tide levels.

honkhonkpants··on Apple Abandons Development of Wireless Routers
You just said it was stupid. Then you said "If you are happy with your system don't change it." This is contradictory, and your first statement was just inflammatory.
honkhonkpants··on How Fake News Goes Viral: A Case Study
There aren't any. The Times bent over backwards to stab Clinton in the back at every opportunity, to avoid accusations of bias.
honkhonkpants··on How Fake News Goes Viral: A Case Study
Here's the news story that Fox News posted in its non-opinion, non-blog, supposedly-factual reporting section of their site.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/11/10/trump-protests-intensif...

Here's some quality facts from that article.

""" But observers online are claiming that, in some cases, protesters were bused to the scenes - a telltale sign of coordination.

“Anti-Trump protestors in Austin today are not as organic as they seem,” one local in the Texas capitol tweeted Wednesday, along with photos offered as evidence.

[...]

Rumors have also been circulating that the new batch of anti-Trump protesters has been bankrolled by individuals like billionaire liberal activist George Soros and groups like Moveon.org.

“WTF, @georgesoros busing in & paying #protestors to destroy cities is domestic #terrorism. #fakeProtests #BlueLivesMatter have tough days,” read one tweet in response to the viral picture of buses in Austin. """

Fox News runs pieces using these fantasy tweets as their primary source. They also run these stories on their TV network that your mom watches all day.

honkhonkpants··on How Fake News Goes Viral: A Case Study
There are literally zero comments on those other two, so they aren't discussions.
honkhonkpants··on How Fake News Goes Viral: A Case Study
I think the original fake tweet author's response to this is pretty revealing. He essentially retracts his tweet, while reserving the right to repost it again, and to post such false things in the future. Let's read his own word:

"While there’s no such thing as absolute certainty, I now believe that the busses that I photographed on Wednesday, November 9, were for the Tableau Conference 2016 and had no relation to the ongoing protests against President Elect Trump."

In other words, he is saying in that first sentence that he doesn't rule out that his original interpretation will eventually be proven correct. There's no such thing as an absolute certainty, after all! It remains possible that the 2016 Tableau conference and its 13000+ attendees were all an elaborate ruse to cover up an astroturf protest. We can't rule anything out prematurely! But he _currently_ believes that this might not be the case, in agreement with the overwhelming evidence. Currently.

"I don’t know that Donald Trump was talking about me (posted 24 hours after my post), but he’s among many with doubts"

Many people doubt this fact, in the face of overwhelming evidence, because people like Eric Tucker, Donald Trump and his campaign apparatus have spent the last year priming the public to believe crazy things that aren't true.

"Let’s not be afraid to say things when we aren’t completely sure"

Well actually yeah, let's just be afraid to do that.

"I value our ability to discuss with each other in a civil and respectful tone regardless of where our views may stand."

Except for that part where he gets up on Twitter and makes stuff up about people with whom he disagrees, and posts those made-up things as facts, he is totally 100% down with respect. Very respectful. None more respectful.

For reference the original tweet was "Anti-Trump protestors in Austin today are not as organic as they seem. Here are the busses they came in. #fakeprotests #trump2016 #austin pic.twitter.com/VxhP7t6OUI"

And this one already has 15x as many points, so deal with it.
honkhonkpants··on Google Cloud is 50% cheaper than AWS
The same reason that Google could launch Gmail with 100x as much free storage as Hotmail: Google's physical infrastructure is dramatically less expensive than everyone else's.
honkhonkpants··on Google reverses its ‘digital death sentence’ for Pixel phone resellers
Which part of the automation failed? It appears to have identified with perfect accuracy an organized ring of phone scalpers. I think their account abuse team should be roundly congratulated.
honkhonkpants··on Gmvault: Backup and restore your Gmail account
Ironically using some of these buggy tools can be an effective and swift way to get your account locked out or at least rate limited by anti-abuse systems. Read the code and make sure they are using official APIs and are coded sanely.
honkhonkpants··on U.S. chicken prices may have been artificially inflated for years
So funny. The current right wing enthusiasts don't even mention the cattle futures thing, which is the only outright crooked thing you can really hang off Hillary Clinton. It's all Benghazi all the time these days but to me the Clintons have so much of the small-time corruption in their history.
honkhonkpants··on Demystifying the i-Device NVMe NAND
Violating the timing specs for PCI signalling would put the whole system into an undefined state. It's possible you could glitch the thing on the other end into doing whatever you want. Who knows?
honkhonkpants··on Demystifying the i-Device NVMe NAND
That isn't what he's describing. He is commanding the storage controller to initiate DMA from host memory over the PCI-Express bus.
honkhonkpants··on Demystifying the i-Device NVMe NAND
Some big words mixed in there, but if you try your hand at this I think you'd find that making impedance-controlled differential traces on a PCB isn't much of a trick at all. It's a difficult engineering challenge if you intend to mass produce, but it's not a challenge if you intend to make 10 boards and you aren't cost sensitive and you don't care if 9 boards don't work.
honkhonkpants··on Demystifying the i-Device NVMe NAND
That isn't the point. This exploits the host, which holds plaintext data in memory.
honkhonkpants··on Go fonts
Images of the way a font was rendered on some output device are always going to look weird and wrong on another one.
honkhonkpants··on GPUs for Google Cloud Platform
Like I said, I'm just curious. Google has so much capacity that I'm not sure it would be important for their bottom line to move it between Google and customer workloads in quanta smaller than one physical machine. Your theory also requires Google to have a substantial standby workload that is currently not scheduled, doesn't it?
honkhonkpants··on GPUs for Google Cloud Platform
I'm curious to know what workloads you think Google is running on the same hardware that cloud customers are using.
honkhonkpants··on HP Unveils Mini Workstation
It's 8.5" on each square side and 2.3" high. A square 8.5" on a side has a diameter of 12".
honkhonkpants··on HP Unveils Mini Workstation
Even a Macbook Pro can drive 4 external displays and the internal display at the same time. The Mac Pro that came out in 2013 can drive 6.

The question is really up to the GPU makers to put the right output capacity on their cards, and the integrator to hook up all the ports and make sure the software actually works.

honkhonkpants··on HP Unveils Mini Workstation
Actually has a footprint larger than the Mac Pro which is only about 7" in diameter. This has a diameter of 12".
honkhonkpants··on Chevrolet Bolt EV Is the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year
You jumped from mean to median. The /median/ new car price in this country is about $22k.
honkhonkpants··on Chevrolet Bolt EV Is the 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year
Doesn't seem specific to electrics. I owned several trucks that couldn't tow that trailer. Towing capacity has more to do with the frame, brakes, and cooling than it does with energy and power. Still I think someone will make series hybrid pickups at some point. They already make big rigs that way.
