homosaur··on A case for something, anything more simple than WordPress
I'm so weary of people pitching the solution to WordPress and then tossing a proprietary cloud hosted thing at me. That's a complete non-starter.

All the time I hear from fellow devs "oh don't advertise you use WordPress, it's irrelevant to clients." Tell that to my bank account and all the jobs I've stolen from agencies who wanted to use their BS proprietary CMS.

I sell WordPress like this: when you want a rebuild in 10 years and I'm in Thailand smoking drugs with your money pile you just gave me, you'll be able to find someone to work on it no problem.

There's plenty to dislike about the WP codebase, but we all have to remember that WP was made in an era when coding reasonable software in PHP was nearly impossible. Nothing backwards-compatible can happen there that isn't going to destroy all the millions of existing sites. It's still pretty freaking easy to build a site with, especially when you compare it to other CMSes of that era.

Moreover, their development roadmap is actually really solid. I like where WP is going. I unfortunately would no longer recommend it for basic blogging due to its complexity but as a CMS, there's really not a lot of free software options that can function on that level without extensive database programming and security knowledge.

homosaur··on JavaScript Allongé is free
How does other people being able to now access the book for free affect you at all? Besides, you got the ebook, it's still not free.
homosaur··on JavaScript Allongé is free
Reg: Is there a way after reading the book to donate a few bucks in a tip jar? It's unlikely that I ever purchase this ebook but I would maybe like to toss a 10 spot your way for the value I will extract from this.

homosaur··on I Am An Object Of Internet Ridicule, Ask Me Anything
It seems like the hipster-as-a-pejorative thing started around the total collapse of the music industry in the mid-2000's and unfortunately was driven by indie scenesters who resented the influx of popularity when say, Modest Mouse had a song appear on say, One Tree Hill. The primary aesthetic religion of the indie scene from punk onward, no matter what the genre or style, was D.I.Y. so suburbanites who went to Hot Topic to grab Iron Maiden t-shirts were profoundly reviled.

This happens in any insular subculture. Do I even need to mention the "geek girl" bullshit?

The problem has quickly become that this revulsion has also played into the jock-centric bullying of anyone who dares to be different--"my football coach won't let me grow my hair long so now let me go punch that faggot with the plastic frames" sort of crap. Any indie community that still exists needs to rid itself of all this baggage for that reason alone.

Whatever utility the word "hipster" had as a pejorative, if any, is gone. Internet killed pop culture and it's dead to stay. The most popular cartoon character now is effing Grumpy Cat. Anyone should consider anyone else using "hipster" as an offhand pejorative to be no greater than a classroom bully, no different than calling someone a dweeb in the 1980s.

homosaur··on Show HN: Ditch Black Text to Read Faster, Easier
WOW, I just tried this on some text and although I think I'd need some more objective tests, it FEELS faster, like significantly so.
homosaur··on How Poverty Taxes the Brain
You do have time to read, though. You just stated you have 2 hours on a bus.

In general, the point of something like castle doctrine is to maintain defense of life, not property. If I went down to the edge of my property and someone came onto my property and was not threatening me you can't then shoot them. The argument for castle doctrine is you can consider the act of home invasion itself to represent deadly force and can respond freely.

Castle doctrine is a states-only policy and the feds have no position on it. The second amendment states only that people's right to bear arms shall not be infringed, it doesn't state anything about the application of force.

I don't want to get into this debate on HN but there's not that much evidence that the 2nd Amendment was meant to be a check on the army. It's related to the long-standing English principle of the right to self-defense and the English Bill of Rights of 1689. The English always thought you had the right to defend yourself with deadly force and a long standing tradition of a natural right to bear arms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right_to_keep_and_bear_arms

I get what you're aiming at but if you're holding the shotgun, that's not government. Government is when I cede the right to protect my forest with a shotgun in order that a government entity will do it for me. We give government a monopoly on force under the agreement that I generally should not be shooting people to protect my rights.
homosaur··on Don't Fly During Ramadan
When people who are in the majority, politically or ethnically, say they aren't in a police state it's usually because they aren't yet being targeted.
homosaur··on I am not a css hacker but please HN change your css. smartphone experience suck
This is not about design or layout, it's about antiquated and unacceptable code. You could fix all the problems I'm complaining about and not change the look or feel one pixel. I'm actually surprised that any programmer worth a nickel including PG can stomach keeping such poor code in production.
homosaur··on Judge sentences Bradley Manning to 35 years
If you paid attention to the sentencing hearings, it was clear that the chain of command should be largely responsible for the happenings of the Manning case. They repeatedly ignored and swept under the rug issues related to his mental state and fitness for duty, and a lot of it was done for the reasons of DADT.
homosaur··on Tesla Model X
Oh right, I guarantee you this is correct. It's the popularity of high center of gravity cars like SUVs combined with a lack of driving ability. Nice thinking.
homosaur··on I am not a css hacker but please HN change your css. smartphone experience suck
I agree with you but I think doing things like eliminating table layout and having some sort of improved experience on mobile would not affect usership at all. You could keep the look and feel the same. There are profound technical issues with the site that affect everyone that could literally be addressed in an afternoon if anyone cared.
homosaur··on I am not a css hacker but please HN change your css. smartphone experience suck
I'm resigned to the fact this website will never improve at all.

Trail mix is elementary school crap, we trail Nazis have all moved to pemmican. Better density and energy content.
homosaur··on Tesla Model X
Not even an SUV. They only made it flat and crossover-looking so they didn't have to admit it's basically a hatchback. Far closer to a wagon, honestly.
homosaur··on Tesla Model X
This could actually be even lower on the highway as well due to the smart suspension (optional, but common) that lowers the car at highway speeds.

Why are suspensions softer in the US? Is that simply related to the fact that a large slice of the rural market is driving on unpaved roads frequently? I would assume this would be an issue elsewhere in the world also, but perhaps not in Europe.

homosaur··on Tesla Model X
That's absolutely true, but you also don't need a special mechanism to pop the hinges.
homosaur··on India: the Story You Never Wanted to Hear
Well most of those cultures you just said are not objectively worse also have the death penalty, so I'm not sure where you're going with this. This sort of moral relativism is not really helpful to anyone or any society. Enforced gender roles are morally objectionable because they are not compatible with justice, period.

There's a difference between saying a culture is bad because they eat an animal you think it's wrong to eat and that they mistreat an entire sex and if you don't see that, you need to work on your moral system some more.

Yes, BSA believes this while ignoring things like this: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/ex-cop-s...

This was in my hometown.

This fat fucking sack of subhuman dogshit was also a resource officer at the school and the interim chief of police. When he was the resource officer at my high school, everyone called him "Baby Huey."

See the Red Cross forcing id Software to change the red crosses on medpacks to pills. I mean who gives a shit, on any level? But some enforcement lawyer got a bug up their butt and they are paid to do this exact thing.

One of the many reasons I don't donate to Red Cross, actually. Too much money on advertising and lawyers.

homosaur··on Tesla Model X
Ah, henge pin charges, makes sense. I suppose you could just kick the doors off at that point.
homosaur··on Tesla Model X
I like Tesla and I like this car okay, but that is not a crossover. I have a Nissan Rogue which is on the smaller side of the crossover range and the body height it still significant enough where you could tell it's certainly not a sedan even with a casual glance. The only similarity that has is the flat back.

Good luck as well with those falcon wing doors when you're trying to park at your downtown football stadium or of course, wanting any roof accessories. Once again, not a crossover, because crossover basically means a small engine SUV. This is a sedan with a flat ass.

Wouldn't there be major safety concerns during a rollover? How the hell would you get out of your burning Model X?

homosaur··on David Miranda detention legally sound, says Scotland Yard
The fact that SY thinks "legally sound" is the important issue shows how much of a disconnect there is between government and public.

It's pretty obvious that half if not most of the crap the NSA is pulling the in States is explicitly illegal and that does nothing to raise the ire of most politicians, the president, the lamestream media, and the NSA itself.

That's what happens with a police state, people are only targeted when they're on the wrong side.

homosaur··on My Final Post
That's why you get paid. Plenty of people build cool stuff in their garages and never distribute it to the world. Lots of people worked hard for the money they pay to these companies, too. That's no excuse for incivility though.

Yeah I only asked because I agree with the above poster that we can't consider WebP common yet but was unsure if I was forgetting something. I can see the utility in this then, at least as a stopgap.
