> Jin reported that the proof was obtained with the assistance of OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol model during an approximately sixteen-hour autonomous reasoning session in ChatGPT Work, after which he checked the resulting argument

You're wrong

> People have been correctly excited about the many "sudden" breakthroughs LLMs are making in Maths

That people ARE making, surely not machines. Like Terence Tao or Knuts did using the tool to their advantage, for example it would have been impossible for me to prove the same thing Tao did with an LLM. Same reason I believe programmers won't go away

hollowturtle··on Ask HN: AI writes better code than me. How to keep my identity?
> Now you can do it without writing code.

That’s just a gigantic bs you wouldn’t be able to stir an ai without code writing knowledge this approach in the long term we will make all of you shilling people go back to hand code crucial parts of the business logic

hollowturtle··on Ask HN: AI writes better code than me. How to keep my identity?
> When AI writes better code than I do

Have you ever asked yourself maybe you’re not that good and you can still learn and improve and be relevant?

hollowturtle··on Ask HN: AI writes better code than me. How to keep my identity?
> The real problem is that AI is now too good.

We must live in two different worlds, it must be like that

hollowturtle··on Ask HN: How to Vibe Design as Engineer?
To start with would you be willing trying inputing Claude with the following instructions? No rounded borders, no excessive padding/margins, no rotated cards, no excessive shadows. More compact/dense ui but also increase base font size a little bit. Make the dark ui the default, use a less neon green color on dark mode, contrast is not great, same for the foreground color. A little nit: On mobile there's an annoying horizontal scrollbar.

Maybe you have fun saying if it converts better or not! I'm fan of a/b testing

If you do let me know ;)

hollowturtle··on Ask HN: Why is AI civil tech and not military first?
> You're absolutely right! I killed a bunch of civilians that have nothing to do with the terror group we talked about, let me update my memory
hollowturtle··on Ask HN: How to Vibe Design as Engineer?
it looks identical to god knows how many other sites and also uninteresting for the same reason. How would catch attention of a customer? With a card slightly rotated over another? That's abysmal
hollowturtle··on Ask HN: Are you still using AI code autocomplete?
I liked Cursor autocomplete a lot, it was very smart and adapted very well to your intentions, then, and they never will tell you, when they launched coding agents the autocomplete feature was somehow tuned down, not by being dumber but by being too proactive, so it resulted useless most of the time
hollowturtle··on Ask HN: Are you still using AI code autocomplete?
then tell us why you still have a job?
hollowturtle··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
> Repeating these things won’t make them true or protect your job.

Most of these things are just true as of today.

> You protect your job by learning how to use new tools as the technology advances.

Sure and the more you learn the more you see how hyped they were and reality untangle

> Engineers don't ask a tool to write code.

And what they ask? They create loops or graphs? These tools ultimately vomit code anyways

hollowturtle··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
Very much not a skill issue; even with the best spec, guardrails and evals, frontier models will just do the hell they want.

> one-shot secure, performant code.

I call it reverse skill issue; it feels secure and performant because you can't verify properly, it feels right but it's actually broken in many nuanced ways. You can measure performance and produce a broken measurement as well. It's not as simple as you make it

hollowturtle··on HTML Can Do That
> Figma uses React for the UI panels. Google Docs uses the DOM extensively too.

Tangential uses of the dom, the core app is on the canvas

> I don't use Google Chrome.

Who cares? They have an almost monopoly and they dictate what to implement on the web, it's already happening that many sites don't work on firefox because they've been only optimized for Chrome. And btw Firefox will implement manifest v3 as well. If you're not using Firefox or Safari you're still using chromium. We don't even have the capability anymore of developing alternative browser engines, the spec is a monster and the various attempts are still very far away.

> No one has decided this, it just happened because web browsers were in the right place at the right time

Exactly and since this is the current reality I don't see why we couldn't have better browser tooling for rendering near native stuff like we do on desktop frameworks. Developer tooling for the desktop already exists since ages but web folks have injected desktop apps as well with bloated stuff like electron

hollowturtle··on HTML Can Do That
You can have programmatic apis for accessibility, SEO pages can be dom based, performance of figma is better than if implemented via the dom api, developer experience? you just get the best and stop pretending you have capable people that spend a day on discussing effects in react.

> My web browser is my agent

It's very likely not anymore, otherwise Chrome wouldn't have pushed for manifest v3

> I wish Figma and Google Docs were just offline-usable desktop applications.

I wish this too, but since we have decided app distribution to be web based, we need serious tools for making serious apps

hollowturtle··on Show HN: Huzzah – a novel approach to coding with AI
I mean if you can write pseudocode then just code it yourself, very often that would be almost the same number of tokens/lines
hollowturtle··on HTML Can Do That
You confuse marketing websites with productivity apps, google docs, figma and many more already render on a canvas using webassembly or not. It's a matter of exposing the right tools
hollowturtle··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
What is then the impact of dissolving plastics in a few years? Can't believe it's a zero impact scenario. We can't still figure out what microplastics do to our health. As usual the best solution is the simplest: prevent plastics to ever reach the ocean. As simple as that and that doesn't costs much
hollowturtle··on HTML Can Do That
An "HTML Can't Do That" would be hundreds pages long, and at the pace of getting features like dialogs every decade we're limiting ourselfs on any further development and creating serious apps. It wasn't created for apps, it was created for light document formatting. When we will pretend a drawing api we can call directly from webassembly? Outside of web ui frameworks are doing just fine and way better and more performantly than html and dom

hollowturtle··on Linear algebra done right
For those who find Linear Algebra Done Right too much to start with, and those who don't get why Strang starts with matrices, I can't recommend more "The dark art of linear algebra" read this first. With this you can then tackle every other book on the topic more easily
hollowturtle··on Stop Killing Games: It's time to sue Sony, join us
Why not going with both? Choice is never bad for the consumer, even if the majority or sales is digital. I usually buy both and they just lost me, I won't buy into their dystopian store
hollowturtle··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I mean in which lucky place of the planet you live in? I dunno u but where I live it's 40 degree celsius out there and all over europe. I'm a remote worker and most time of the year going outside is just not possibile, over heat or too cold or raining like it never did before(climate change you know)
hollowturtle··on Soon We'll Share Blueprints, Not Code
Blueprints are code the same as current code is blueprints over machine code. I myself wrote a good amount of code and done a bunch of visual programming, they're basically the same. AI is not good at high level blueprints because implementation matters
hollowturtle··on Zed DeltaDB
I would pay the cost of a license for a good editor. I did with sublime+sublime merge. I did with Intellij. I did many times
hollowturtle··on Zed DeltaDB
> Every change is linked to the agent conversation that produced it

A total nightmare and imo every dev should push back using this stuff. You'd otherwise have management brag about you not being a good communicator with the ai agent, the same management that have no idea how to steer these tools.

I really like Zed the editor, I'm not sure I like the path they getting into

hollowturtle··on AI doesn't generate working products, that's still your job
> An experienced engineer using modern AI tools can move at a pace that would have been unimaginable five years ago.

I dunno sometimes I think I should have sticked with a simpler solution coded by hand with more tradeoffs, than trying doing more and spend days back and forth in an endless feedback loop. Or fighting back the Agent that is more than happy to over produce.

IMO the problem is not the single developer using more agentic tooling, it's the whole work chain, who reviews your changes use agentic tooling assistance and over produce a lot of feedback and you're back with the clanker making many decisions that just drains you at the end of the day. I miss the times where we released many more simple things sith many more tradeoffs and business decisions
