holdenk··on Novell to Los Angeles: Drop Dead
Personally I think this is more a case study in how not to do PR. We have a company (well city) announce they are moving to a competitors product. Do you 1)Give them a call and try and see if the relationship can be salvaged? 2)Failing that allow them to go ahead with the migration, but let them know should they decide compelling featutre you offer is important, you'd be more than willing to help them migrate back to your offering in the future OR Write a press release, suggesting that your customer is making a bad decision?

To me, it seems that criticizing a past customer based on there choice to use another service provider is simple bone-headed. I mean you can say these things internally, but to publish a press release?

holdenk··on A Job Posting in JSON
This reminds me of a company in Ottawa that posted a job offer in the TXT records for their domain. Admittedly that company shortly later on went bankrupt in a billing dispute with Bell Canada, but still pretty cool.
holdenk··on Poll: What is your primary *nix distro on your home machine?
I've been using Ubuntu @ home and Debian for servers (and RHEL for day job), but I'm considering dumping Ubuntu. dontzap and stuff like that is crazysauce.
holdenk··on Blacklisted as Malware: a Downside of using Amazon EC2
You can try something like http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx , it checks a bunch of RBLs all at once.
holdenk··on The Forest, the Trees, and the Bag Fees
I could be wrong, but from looking at the authors data, and the writing, it seems as if the author is "massage" his interpretation of the data to fit his hypothesis (which could very well be valid). The author suggests "You can draw a straight line: The faster they added fees, the more their revenue fell." While it may be true for the worst performing carriers, this trend doesn't hold with the "least bad carriers" (Alaska fell faster than AirTran but added fees later, Southwest fell faster than JetBlue, but doesn't have fees). While I do see the point the author is trying to make, and it may very well be valid, I'm not prepared to reach the conclusion "The faster airlines add fees for basic services like checked bags, the faster their total revenue declines.", the data he provided just doesn't show that. edit:typos
holdenk··on Null-prefix certificate for paypal
VPNs however add considerable latency as well as cost and complexity. Its not like there is no down side to using VPNs. If your using SSH and a web browser which isn't susceptible to the current SSL exploits, I don't see why I would want to use a VPN over Wi-Fi.
holdenk··on Announcing ABTests.com
I wonder if its any different from http://www.google.com/websiteoptimizer . Hopefully someone posts once theres something there.
holdenk··on Ask HN: how do people solve the 3 Google Code Jam problems in 25 minutes?
I decided to use haskell as it has been awhile since I've touched it, I made the mistake of not compiling with -O for the first question (and it did not complete in the 8 minutes). When I re-ran afterwards (sadly no points) with -O it completed very quickly.
holdenk··on Source: Apple And Google Agreed Not To Poach Workers
Could you explain how this is a nice gesture?
holdenk··on Ask HN: How to promote Android applications?
I hadn't thought of putting the QR code on the site, neat idea :)
holdenk··on Why writing a Windows compatible file server is (still) hard
One of my first jobs during University involved automating windows interoperability for a small Linux distribution. I must agree with the author, "Interoperability with Windows is hard. But somebody has to do it.", I'm just glad I don't have to do that anymore :)
holdenk··on Apparently AT&T has started blocking 4chan
Reading some of the threads, people are suggesting that they go out and cut AT&T fiber (hopefully people are too lazy to do this).

But in all seriousness, if this does turn out to be an attempt at filtering, does anyone have recommendations on things that could be done by non-AT&T customers to help convince AT&T that this is a bad idea?

holdenk··on Network Solutions breach exposed 500k credit cards
Most of the time I see people looking for different payment processors, security doesn't even seem to enter the list. Is this something that we need to consider when picking a processor, or are they all pretty much equal?
holdenk··on Mororola's new free Android IDE
How is this different from eclipse+ADT?
holdenk··on Ask HN: What website project are you working on?
I'm working on two things right now ( http://web2.0collage.com & http://pcfspam.com ) I'm hoping to wrap up the first (a lot of it was an experiment into how to do basic PR) and get started on the second after exams.
holdenk··on An Open Letter To Jona Bechtolt
interesting. From reading it, it sounds like the author is going to make it difficult for the pirate to move in the circles which the author has influence in? Personally I think I'd prefer to give the pirate the chance to pay for the software first, but I may have miss-read the blog post.
holdenk··on My real-time operating system
CS452 for the :P I hear rumours they are moving away from x86 for that course, have you heard anything about it?
holdenk··on US animal-rights extremists firebomb scientists' home, car
sadpanda :( Using violence to make a point about animal rights seems a little odd...
holdenk··on Seattle meetup?
schweet
holdenk··on Ask YC: What's your Rails setup?
So I might be a bit odd but for the rails site which I did run for awhile the db layer was sqlite replicated on each machine. Since it only did reads this turned out to work better than MySQL. Everything was on EC2 instances (except for the dev instance on my laptop). The correct combination of technologies depend largely on your application, what are you building?
holdenk··on Can anybody recommend a web-traffic service?
You could try writing interesting content and growing organically rather than paying for traffic. The kind of traffic you are likely to get from a lot of these traffic services is of dubious quality. What subject area is your blog about?
holdenk··on Ask YC: Are you religous?
I'm not religious and religion makes me somewhat uncomfortable . This may be in part since religion is largely considered a private/personal matter in Canada (or at least Ontario :P).
holdenk··on New library to help building spam filters in haskell (parallel DNSRBL lookup)
Its my first haskell module, so any comments on how to improve it would be greatly appreciated :)
holdenk··on Smart classification using Bayesian monads in Haskell
Looks interesting. Are there any classification libraries for haskell?
holdenk··on Zoitz Horror story
I blame scheme :P but maybe I'm a little too optimistic about the kids :P
holdenk··on Microsoft, Icahn offered Yahoo $2.3 bln annual revenue
So Yahoo thinks they can get ~$1.4bln in add revenue besides the amount from Google which they already have? Does there past financial history suggest this?
holdenk··on OpenMokos begin shipping in the US
So its $399 , but I got a debug board to go along with it.
holdenk··on OpenMokos begin shipping in the US
It does, they are tri-band the online store is just poorly laid out (it is either 850/1800/1900 or 900/1800/1900) depending on which model you select.
holdenk··on OpenMokos begin shipping in the US
Yes, thats what I mean.
holdenk··on How do you prepare to launch your app?
TechCrunch will cover people who don't break the silence through them, but they try to be a news site so they seem much more likely to cover a recent launch than an old launch.

You could always just have your sign up page check for news.ycombinator.com as the referrer if you wanted to expand your beta just to the HNN audience.
