hogu··on Silicon Valley Is Not a Fad
NYC has a similar meetup culture and a great tech community. I'd bet Seattle, Austin, and Chicago do to.

The difference is that other cities have diversified economies with multiple hot industries.

hogu··on Why the world's software engineers are moving to Singapore
I'm posting this because my inlaws are in SG (we're in NYC). The idea of moving there is appealing. I gave a talk at the SG python meetup in 2014 and the sentiment I got at the time was that the tech scene was pretty depressing. Low wages, competing with outsourcing firms, etc.. Has it changed? I'd like opinions from locals (not propaganda from the SG govt)
hogu··on The key to building an idea seems to be blind faith
There is a whole culture of boots-trappers who focus on testing and making pre-sales rather than sinking time on blind faith. I just came home from hanging out with them at

https://www.microconf.com

I don't see why blind faith is necessary for the majority of ideas.

hogu··on Ask HN: How to find profitable side project idea?
I know this sounds dumb, but I found this to be very useful

https://jamesaltucher.com/blog/the-ultimate-guide-for-becomi...

It's an entertaining read, but the premise is

- idea generation is a skill - you need to practice - come up with 10 garbage ideas per day (and occasionally one or two are good)

hogu··on Google terminated our business via our Google Play Developer Account
I tried paying my outstanding balance (peanuts) but the system won't let you after you're banned
hogu··on Google terminated our business via our Google Play Developer Account
No. I had just started and I was banned before my first billing cycle. The assign account managers to all new clients to help you get setup properly
hogu··on Google terminated our business via our Google Play Developer Account
I don't think you can - once you get banned, they run you through some automated thing which usually just tells you the decision is final, and you're banned for good. Then you CANNOT talk to someone. And if you do speak with a customer service rep that finds out you've been banned, they have to stop talking to you.

I had an account representative from google at some point. As soon as I was banned, all my calls were routed to voicemail automatically.

hogu··on Google terminated our business via our Google Play Developer Account
I was also suspended.

- Having friends inside google does not help (I suppose at some level they can, but L5/L6 engineers aren't enough)

- Creating a new account with a different credit card does not help. Subsequent accounts they can link back to you will also be banned

- I haven't found a solution yet, except for keeping all of my new projects outside of google (no google analytics, no google search console (which obviously still allows your site to be indexed) no gsuite. That way if I never need google advertising, a co founder can pick it up and google has no way to trace the company back to me.

hogu··on Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes
Yes you can. I'm serving a 1 year non-compete and my former employer encourages getting non finance work because they hope you never go back to the industry
hogu··on I Can No Longer Recommend Google Fi
Is anyone using GCE? This is making me pretty worried. I'm operating a jupyter notebook service where every user gets their own volume. If my account was suspended and we no longer have access to user data that would be terrible. We can try backing data out to AWS but the egress fees would add up
hogu··on I Can No Longer Recommend Google Fi
I have friends at Google that are L5. When my AdWords account was suspended (long story but if you Google AdWords banned my hackernoom article explains) one of them tried to file a ticket on my behalf. Went nowhere. As far as I can tell internal actions like that go the same route as tickets that I file as a normal person. So don't let having googler friends give you a false sense of security.
hogu··on Ask HN: If you had two months off between jobs what would you be doing?
I had 3 months between jobs 3 years ago. I watched all of Doctor Who (never watched it before) and just generally relaxed, ate healthy, and exercised. I also spent 2 weeks traveling. This was very useful because I was quite burned out from the previous job.

I have a year off between jobs right now (finance non compete) and I'm using the time to bootstrap a company

hogu··on Why Jupyter is data scientists’ computational notebook of choice
I'm literally building this right now to fulfill this need. If you shoot me an email to hugo@opensourceanswers.com, I can let you know when it's ready. My plan is to charge a premium (similar to github prices) per user, and pass on compute costs directly to the customer with no markup

hogu··on A coworking space wants me to sign a 2 year non compete just to be a member
yes - I walked away, signing with another one nearby
hogu··on A coworking space wants me to sign a 2 year non compete just to be a member
I did - I spoke to the cofounders about it and they were firm - they believe they need it to keep someone from running off with their intellectual property (I'm not sure exactly what IP a coworking space has...)
hogu··on A coworking space wants me to sign a 2 year non compete just to be a member
I'm almost certain this one isn't enforceable and I probably won't ever do anything in that space (but remember that also means taking software contracts from coworking spaces as a consultant) but I still won't sign something onerous just so I can pay someone money to work in their office
hogu··on Making Pulled Pork with React Native, Expo, and Express
no bark though right?
hogu··on A plea for stability in the SciPy ecosystem
That's probably true for numpy 1.10-1.11, but I"ve seen other libraries make dramatic changes (for example changing the default behavior of a function)

http://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/version/0.17.0/generate...

pandas changed NaN handling for ewma pre 0.15, which can greatly change the output if your data is sparse

if everything goes to shit why wouldn't xapo just steal all the btc?
hogu··on Don’t buy the MacBook Pros even on sale, in my opinion
what's the battery for then? Just so you can move it from one place to another without shutting it down? And if so then it would only have to be enough of a battery to power the suspend right?
hogu··on Teaching Pandas and Jupyter to Northwestern journalism students
1 thing that might help

%run the_script_you_wrote_in_sublime.py

will evaluate the script and expose the script globals in the interactive namespace. Then you can mess around with the values and do plots. This gives you the interactivity of the notebook as well as the benefits of the editor you already use

hogu··on More microbursts are coming
Just curious, are you a father/rancher and a software dev? How did you come across hn?
hogu··on Ask HN: What happens to people who graduate and can't find an entry job?
Hi, have you ever done any practice interviews? You should get since honesty feedback on your interview/job search. It's possible that there is something you are doing that is sabotaging your chances which had nothing to do with your technical ability
hogu··on Mypy 0.3 Released – optional static type checker for Python
there are tons of businesses that write only python 2 code (like, every finance shop I've ever worked or consulted at)
hogu··on Show HN: Inline C in Python
thanks! looks really cool

btw - I suspect a different title might help get more traction on hn - inlining C isn't that interesting (scipy.weave has done this for years) but this approach to inlining is super cool, and can be extended to other langs. none of this is obvious from the title

hogu··on Show HN: Inline C in Python
wow that is pretty nuts! do you think it would be possible to add a quasi quoter that could inline cython?
hogu··on Comparison – R vs. Python: head to head data analysis
IF you do your stuff in R, how do you move it into production? Or do you not need to
hogu··on Making Cython as easy as Python
it may be worth checking out cytoolz
hogu··on Making Cython as easy as Python
fwiw - the best you can do here, is probably implement the dots yourself as cdef functions. If your arrays get larger, you can get a C pointer to the blas routine from scipy and call it from cython (which can be faster than the dot you write when your arrays are larger)
