Posting a poll about Edward Snowden on Hacker News is like posting a poll about Sarah Palin on Fox News.

Perhaps it's a good thing that you have to read his whole piece to know what he's saying.

Awesome. I had been using this bookmarklet:

hodgesmr··on An Open Letter To Recruiters
I'm always perplexed at how annoyed the dev community gets at recruiters. Sure, it's weird when they don't put forth an effort, but come on, you're getting unsolicited job offers multiple times a week! We're EXTREMELY lucky that our industry is flourishing right now. So many people have been unemployed for months (years) and they can't so much as get a phone-call.

Take the recruitment as flattery. If you're not interested, delete it and move on. Better yet, forward it to someone who might be interested.

hodgesmr··on Ember.js is driving me crazy
While you're not wrong, this doesn't speak at all to the issue that the OP is expressing. While you might think his/her style is messy, it should still be valid. Commented-out code should behave the same way as deleted code.

hodgesmr··on What is really happening in Ukraine
Uhm, Ukraine is an independent, sovereign country. Comparing Ukraine to Texas makes no sense.
hodgesmr··on What I Wish I Had Known Before Selling to Google
I was surprised at how short this article was. I feel like a lot more than 240 words could be dedicated to "What I Wish I Had Known Before Selling to Google".. most of which was just filler for "think carefully about the return on investment, including the effect on team culture, not just the bottom line" and no real insight or guidance.
hodgesmr··on Bro pages: like man pages, but with examples only
This is a neat idea. I won't comment on the name--but observations on the tool:

Looks like anyone can submit examples to this. Users need to be very careful before blindly copy-pasting the "example" scripts into their shell. Hopefully the voting system will remedy this, but that's not guaranteed. While not nearly as dangerous as copy-pasting from the browser[1], still proceed with caution.

hodgesmr··on Intro to jQuery: Learn jQuery with Street Fighter and Hadoukens
I think the tutorial is nice and does a good job demonstrating the power that jQuery offers over plain old JS. But if a newcomer to web dev came across this, it seems to not relay the point of what jQuery is: a JavaScript library. IMO, "learning jQuery" is a rather abstract concept and in the grand scheme, developers would be better off spending time with plain old JavaScript and making themselves familiar with how to read the jQuery API. I know this sounds rather "RTFM" of me, but that's not quite what I'm going for.

Good job on the tutorial. But I hope new-comers will look for JavaScript references for future education.

hodgesmr··on Intro to jQuery: Learn jQuery with Street Fighter and Hadoukens
While I applaud the time the author took to write this, isn't the message a bit misguided? Wouldn't it be more useful to encourage people to "Learn JavaScript and how to read an API"?
hodgesmr··on WebViews Are Not To Be Trusted
At least native app forms don't look so much like the authentic website. Harder to phish, but still possible I suppose.

Soon I plan to port my personal blog to Empress, but that hasn't happened yet. However, if you're curious, the Quick Start instructions will get a demo running locally for you!
hodgesmr··on Show HN: Empress - Blogging with Ember.js and Github
Thanks for the interest! I agree, and I do intend to put something up on my github user page. I want to do some custom styling first (since the project is just a template) and also port my old blog from Wordpress.

You're absolutely right! This was a learning experience. I made it open source so that the community can help improve on things I may have done wrong.
hodgesmr··on How to deal with negativity on Twitter
"Celebrity" developers on Twitter are much like political pundits on cable news. They say polarizing things to get a reaction. They aren't gunning for ratings, they're gunning for followers so that they can up their personal star-power in the industry. They speak loudly to sound smart.

Venmo looks like it's trying to make a dent in Paypal's market. They've got a pretty good mobile solution. Though, I hear their eating losses with almost every transaction right now (everything is free, other than debit cards)
