hobo123··on I don't like passkeys
I feel if the _website_ needs to have support for your _password manager_, then that technology is way too fragile for me to want to use it.
hobo123··on I don't like passkeys
We really need Firefox Persona back...
hobo123··on I don't like passkeys
But that's another thing to avoid because now Google can lock you out of 100s of services at once if they ban your account.
hobo123··on I don't like passkeys
Wait, so I set up 2FA, printed the codes, but now if I ever lose my phone or it's stolen I'm screwed?
hobo123··on I don't like passkeys
I wouldn't even know how to sync any of those to my Linux PC.
hobo123··on I don't like passkeys
A German neighborhood social network uses this, and I prefer this over all other sites I visit that have passwords.

I only need a new login link when I switch to a new browser or device, so it's not really annoying at all.

hobo123··on Show HN: Snapdrop: Instantly share files between devices. No setup, no signup
Once I tried Airdrop between Macbooks it was very flaky. Haven't had any problems with localsend so far (Windows, Linux, Android).
hobo123··on Jemalloc 5.4.0
Better keep the wifi working, or your waifu could get angry.
hobo123··on Java 27 Released
If I'm not mistaken, OpenJ9 runtime offers some kind of precompilation and fast startup.
hobo123··on Java 27 Released
I once tried Kotlin for a pet project, but after a while switched it back to Java, since it's good enough, IDE support is better, it's much faster.

I guess if you use/like Intellij it's ok.

hobo123··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Well, my Galaxy S22 (from well: 2022), which still works great will no longer receive _any_ updates after February 27, so I'll have to get new one, or potentially suffer open security holes in the future.

Also, even now I only receive security fixed on a quarterly schedule.

Still not keen on switching to the walled garden - I like the apps I have, including custom browser engines. I like having F-Droid with open source apps.

Will probably get another Samsung, as they have extended updates to 7 years for newer S models.

hobo123··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Even with inotify failing, if the system is plugged in and idle, it could quickly do a scan for files with update date > last known indexed time and index those. Like once per day maybe. Wouldn't take much load or memory, IMHO.
hobo123··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
You mean like Zuck prevents me from seeing any Instagram content without login?
hobo123··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
Love this. Stay hungry, stay bullish. :D
hobo123··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Maybe reporting is the right idea, but Google the wrong target to complain to.

Maybe we should report obvious fraud or illegal content to the authorities.

hobo123··on Everyone should slow down AI development except for me
You mean the legalization argument, where people get well-dosed drugs from the doctor or pharmacy instead of mystery powder from the black market.
hobo123··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
Exactly.

If you want to test military missiles, you do it in the f'ing desert, not from New Jersey.

You want to run ai without guardrails, do it in an airgapped system or be held accountable.

hobo123··on We must pace the frontier
The different is who's operating. In one case you only tell the car to get from a to b, in the other case you explicitly instruct the ai to do things. If the ai causes damages, I'd say it depends on what you prompted. Did you try to find a security hole in system X, or did you ask it for harmless information (in which case rather the ai vendor might be held accountable).

All this is not how the legal system might or might not work, of course.

hobo123··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
I wonder if these could be dangerous if there is ever a leak releasing the CO2. I believe humans only tolerate very low concentrations in the air.

Happy they named it EcoCute, that's so much better than ElectroCute :)

hobo123··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Indeed, on modern laptops and phones every UI interaction should be instant (check out BeOS in 1995 for comparison). For background stuff, add some progress indicator.

Can't believe the crap OSes and frameworks add these days in terms of performance cost (and sadly, Apple doesn't exactly shine in that regard)

hobo123··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Then don't. Isn't the whole point of long support cycles that you can keep using your phone for 5 years +, if it serves you well? (typing this from an S22)
hobo123··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
I think local-first is a good heuristic in that it would avoid needless pushing of goods around the globe (or needless round-trips of lots of data around the globe).

Also, some people might like it if a product or service was made in US, Switzerland, Germany, Italy etc... for purely personal reasons (feelings).

hobo123··on The revolt of the reader
Clearly not, or this wouldn't be something people discuss at all.

There are lots of people who belong to the above groups, sure, but at least here in Germany Nazi is now applied to basically anyone who doesn't vote green, it's ridiculous.

hobo123··on GPT-6 Astra
I think there is value in an app you can drag/drop or exe you can just click (trust issues aside, maybe get them from some marketplace or walled garden) and that will keep working after the next OS update or get updates for future changes in XYZ.
hobo123··on GPT-6 Astra
It's called omakase, or rather aimakase in this case.
hobo123··on GPT-6 Astra
People will always pay for packaged convenience and a vendor that will keep things working/compatible in the future, IMHO.
hobo123··on Study: Blue light impairs the eye's ability to distinguish fine detail most
Also worth mentioning Twilight on Android.
hobo123··on DHS is using obscure law to snoop on journalists, non-profits, unions
You could say that the difference between "don't be evil" and having no backbone at all is quite a strong incentive (and strongly influences your brand valuation), but once your reputation is in the gutter, maybe it doesn't matter anymore.
hobo123··on GLM-5.3 is now open-weight
Welcome to production software, where you really want to pin all uncertainties and dependencies, and roll back in case a major problem occurs.
hobo123··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
With load on it and a bright room (= display reasonably bright as well) my M3 also doesn't always last 8h. But it gets very close. Intel machines are more like 3h in that case.
