hnriot··on NLUlite: Natural language parser and database
That's not what's meant by Natural Language Parsers. Most are trained on datasets in English, but given the right training they can work in other languages. NLP means a bunch of different things from POS tagging to dependency parsing. What this project is doing is semantic parsing.
hnriot··on NLUlite: Natural language parser and database
it's really simple to get an x64 linux VM up and running, virtual box takes just a few minutes to spin up. I think Linux makes the most sense, it doesn't really make sense for the developer waste cycles on porting when people can just use a VM to run it very easily.
hnriot··on NLUlite: Natural language parser and database
when you 'teach' it, the wisdom files that are saved are in plain old xml

for some URLs the data throws an exception, for example:

It's also really slow at learning. I have a ton of everything, cores, memory etc and it takes minutes to process web pages. I guess you do say that on the website that the free version is slow.

hnriot··on NLUlite: Natural language parser and database
you just have to use -d to specify where the data files are, the server can be anywhere. I moved it out of home to my dev environment without problems.
hnriot··on Inside DuckDuckGo, Google's Tiniest, Fiercest Competitor
"they" aren't reading email and what does it even mean "before I open it" - they host it!!! It's software that "reads" gmail. If you don't want google reading your email, then simply host it elsewhere. Nobody is forcing you to use gmail. It's patently obvious that they use gmail and the usage of their other free services to garner more information to maximize their revenue. Don't like it, don't use it. It's a simple as that.

It frustrates me no end to read stupid comments like yours. Of course they use what you freely give them to their advantage. There are plenty of email hosting options, viable search alternatives, viable mapping alternatives etc etc. Google don't have a monopoly on anything. They make you a simple trade; compelling products in return for profiling you, what you say, where you go and what your search intents might be.

I know perfectly well where google's profits come from. Who reading this site doesn't?

hnriot··on Show HN: Famous Outfits
Who wants to copy what some celeb has on??? I can't believe there's a market for this. Then again, I thought Twitter was a stupid idea...
hnriot··on Inside DuckDuckGo, Google's Tiniest, Fiercest Competitor
that's not the only reason, google's results are better because they have vastly more resources both in employee talent and data. It's not just something as trivial as keeping track of your search history.
hnriot··on Linux Laptop Recommendations
T440p, works great with Ubuntu 14.04. I've not figured out the driver for the fingerprint detector yet though. Not that I care much about that. The SSD makes it super fast to boot and autologin (~7 seconds)

hnriot··on The End of Big Twitter
I only use twitter for its nlp signal, I have zero interest in actually posting or worst still, actually reading any of it. twitter is like youtube comments, without the video. But it's great for what the aggregate signal it contains.
hnriot··on Our Use of Little Words Can, Uh, Reveal Hidden Interests
I was thinking as I read this that someone should capture the essence in nltk.
hnriot··on Ask HN: What are some Bay Area startups that don't use an open office plan?
I have considered that, but I don't buy it for one moment. Open plan offices have many advantages, you just need to hire people that are mature enough to deal with it. People who can self regulate. I don't mind some time spent on FB and HN etc, I think the latter is actually a net-positive, there are technologies that osmotically people become familiar with through reading about people's experiences. But FB is 100% a waste of time. Corporate IT don't block it, they just measure it and provide management reports on it's usage.
hnriot··on Inside Google’s Drone-Delivery Program
touching a rotor chops your hand off. Getting hit in the head by delivery of dog food kills you. It's kinetic vs potential energy. for your kinetic energy equation you need a lot of speed and a lot of mass. You can have one of those, but not both.
hnriot··on My year with a distraction-free iPhone
It sounds like even if you removed these distractions, you'd simply seek out others. As in replace one addiction with another, a very common behavioural characteristic.

The only way to deal with this is to better understand your own personality and try to learn how to get self control. There are lots of cognitive therapy based behavioural modification techniques. Self control only when it's interesting isn't really self control.

hnriot··on My year with a distraction-free iPhone
or just exercise some self control! I don't have to hide the kitchen knives in case I stab guests... It's not that's hard to ignore an icon.
hnriot··on Inside Google’s Drone-Delivery Program

hnriot··on Citymapper is what happens when you understand user experience
I wanted to try it but it doesn't seem to support San Francisco! What kind of app doesn't start with San Francisco, let alone not even include it :)
hnriot··on Ask HN: What are some Bay Area startups that don't use an open office plan?
What I find is that the people that work for me are much more distracted by FB and the plethora of other web distractions than other developers.
hnriot··on Earthquake early-warning system gave 10-second alert before Napa quake felt
I couldn't find how I could get this. I got a txt from the USGS but that was after the event and because I set up twitter to txt me that account, does anyone know how to get these early warnings?

I woke up, but in SF it wasn't much of a big deal.

hnriot··on The State of Oregon vs. Oracle [pdf]
it is absolutely ridiculous, they (the federal government) could have (did) build their own system and then host it for each of the states. Better still, host it in the ones where electricity can be generated cheaply. This is whole reason we have a federal system.
hnriot··on The State of Oregon vs. Oracle [pdf]
they should be able to for things like this, it's a grotesque waste of money for states to build their own system. It would be as insane as each state having it's own army or space program.
hnriot··on Show HN: Dumbphone – Turn your smartphone into a dumbphone
It's sad that you need to do this to feel calm. Technology is an every day part of the 21st century and learning to live with it , not running away from it is a far healthier approach.

Not sure how yo removed Safari since it's not one of the removable apps, but if you really want this why not replace that old iPhone 4 with an actual dumb phone, wouldn't that be the smarter thing to do?

All of your points are kind of sad, if you don't like reading stuff on a small screen, either don't, or get a phone with a bigger screen - removing the email app was the wrong solution. As for the comment about "forced to get around the city", well.. again just the dumbest thing I've heard in a long while.

I have the youtube app but I seldom use it. I seem to manage just fine with it on my phone and not opening it.

hnriot··on Create your own machine-learning-powered RSS reader
It's an option, not sure about NodeXL, wikipedia is already available in structured form in Freebase and DBPedia, but understanding something so complex as a reputation is beyond current machine learning. Bringing the pragmatic background knowledge to sentiment analysis is going to be one of the differentiations. We got 65% easily with a lexicon, we got 75% with SVMs and gobs of training data, we've gone past that with hierarchical aspect models and technologies like word vectors, but the problem of making improvements gets exponentially harder. Before social networks can play a role in sentiment analysis likely we'll see breakthroughs in coreference and similar problems that will help eek out more signal from training data. We can certainly use the "hive mind" to assist in this problem, even something as simple as collaborative filtering can help.
hnriot··on Create your own machine-learning-powered RSS reader
This is called ensemble classification where you feed the outputs of multiple classifiers as features into an ensemble classifier that produces the final result.

How are you using the Stanford NLP? That's all GPL?

There are alternatives you could look at for sentiment analysis but short "documents" like those referenced will always produce poor results because there's just not enough signal to work with. The training models need to have vocabulary overlap with the documents (at least for word features); try TextBlob which uses a lexicon approach rather than a classifier, or try rolling your own with an off-the-shelf SVM and pull labeled training data from one of the many sources (or generate your own using Crowdflower.) Small documents (tweets/titles etc) pose unique challenges, especially when there's irony or sarcasm involved or implicit sentiment through pragmatic knowledge. For example knowing Sarah Palin and how she's regarded automatically gives a person a head start in determining the sentiment of a short document with her name. This kind of pragmatic knowledge is hard for classifiers to learn.

right, but the small churches are franchises just like Taco Bell. They all belong to a bigger church.
hnriot··on Poll: How religious is hacker news?
"Don't underestimate humans' abilities to selectively ignore evidence" - right, that pretty much proves my point, you friend is not a scientist.
hnriot··on Poll: How religious is hacker news?
I would contest that. They can be either but not both. They are either not very smart biologists or not very devout creationists. Or more likely just attention seekers.
