hmmokidk··on Ask HN: Recommend resources that helped your game dev journey?
If low level find someone find apprentice under and or Find a job in the industry.

If on with higher level stuff (using an engine) use youtube.

I am doing the self teaching thing for low level with a web and CS background and it is brutal. I am currently on a one month break because one of the challenges I faced was too much.

There are discord channels I join to discuss, ask questions and learn.

I rely heavily on youtube but yeah sometimes it’s a lot. Gamdev is insane.

If you’re just using an engine just focus on shipping small games and start from there.

Even if it means copying a tutorial and changing one little bit.

hmmokidk··on Ask HN: Would you take a "failing upwards" role?
Yeah. It’s on you to leverage the role and sell yourself appropriately, if your goal is to ladder climb. It will be a step towards a more successful position but yeah only if you can sell yourself / what you gained from the position well.
hmmokidk··on Ask HN: What about actual Artificial Intelligence?
Artificially creating thought is not possible. Maybe it’s possible to link existing brains to computers, grow a brain in a lab(?), anything else will basically be some lowly form of mimicry and a far cry from actual thought. I don’t think we will be able to reproduce what nature does to be fair. Unless somehow we bridge the gap between the digital and biological world, which would be neat although extremely morbid. Somehow getting a mouse brain to solve something, attached to a computer?

This is completely out of my ass. I think that’s the best anyone can give you at this point in time.

hmmokidk··on Why Twitter is such a big deal (2009)
decentralized twitter is just useless. i don’t understand the appeal.

when it comes to things like TOR they make sense and are sticky, or minecraft servers (if that counts). decentralization can be desirable, even something bitcoin like (distributing a ledger) can probably have something to offer if used to solve a problem.

I get what you’re saying, though. I think decentralization will be in vogue again, when it solves real problems.

In theory you could create a decentralized uber, possibly even something cash based, if anonymity ever becomes a concern again. Some services don’t necessarily need to be built by companies, they can be unnecessary middle men. It makes sense for drivers to run nodes themselves, be their own bosses, etc.

Kind of a neat idea now I want to build it.

Something like that may not get users immediately but something will inevitably happen that will get people interested in that kind of idea.

hmmokidk··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
Anecdotally TikTok has the best content for me as well. I can’t even place my finger on why I like it more than IG. I don’t know if it’s the slight differences in the content if surfaces. Even if I am just looking through music on both apps (I play guitar) something about TikTok is more pleasant and I really am not sure what.

if they were paid for exactly the value they produced the firm would not profit as all the profit would be paid out to those generating it
hmmokidk··on Just Say No to JavaScript
I love JS. Well, that's not true. I love it, and then I hate it, and then I love it again. And I am not sure how to respond.

It has warts. I have seen a staggering amount of flavors / styles of JS.

It is a really expressive language. But that is kind of a cope. You will figure out how to express your wildest ideas. But you will struggle to read others code.

Multithreading is...weird to say the least. Are people spinning up a server per core? Using PM2? Have they discovered the world of testing...without mocks.

If we don't criticize JS it will never get better. So writing off the criticism of the especially hateful BE dev stereotype isn't doing anyone any good. Take it in stride. Nobodies feelings need to be hurt.

Many languages evolve into other languages. JS does not really have that luxury, and I don't know of any langs that preceded it that were similar (my own ignorance).

It is amazing for what it is.

But...if we could start over with what we have learned over the years many things would certainly be very different.

hmmokidk··on Everything Is Just Functions: 1 week with David Beazley and SICP
The thing is, I find immutable is safer. Less side effects is more predictable. OO is used often when things can just be functions. I love gamedev, and OO makes a lot of sense there because all of the computations and unsafe code is kind of okay. But for webdev FP makes so much more sense. For SAAS something like elixir enables me to write more reliable / less buggy / better tested code.

hmmokidk··on My first game with Carimbo, my homemade engine
Although it is charted territory it’s very difficult. There is an extraordinary amount of concepts (depending on what you’re doing) and some are quite mathy. And software design seems pretty important, although I am not far enough along that it’s an issue.
hmmokidk··on LiveView Native Is Here
Really awesome work. I look forward to messing with this sometime, previously when I took a look it was too early and very rough around the edges.

hmmokidk··on Dell and Palantir to join S&P 500; shares of both jump
I don’t like Elon but Tesla I think deserves to be there. Stocks are kind of like how much people beleive in a company. And lots of people believe in them as they have products people like and a strong brand.

hmmokidk··on Ten Years and Counting: My Affair with Microservices
The only sane microservice amalgamation I worked on was with Elixir/Phoenix. It was event driven and that was the key. I think event driven microservices are an extemely powerful architecture but it’s still the early days for them until we can get really good open source support for replays, sectioning off events from a period, and lots of utilities like that as well as figure out all of the best practices.

I’ve built monoliths but never at scale, but don’t see why they wouldn’t have scaled incredibly well. I have built macroservices that have scaled super well (5ish services IIRC).

hmmokidk··on Elixir at Ramp
The hottest news in the Elixir community is that it is currently experimenting with set theoretic type / gradual typing. Some french PHD is working on it.

It is past the RND phase and in development at the moment.

It is highly experimental and not guaranteed to ship with the next version of Elixir. Right now the idea is to see if it offers any value in the first place. There are a lot of statements about what types offer. What the Elixir team wants to do is actually experiment to see if there's a benefit. Which is a really neat thing for a lang to do...to actually experiment like that is incredible.

As for right now, in a sense yes. It has this thing called Dialyzer - https://www.erlang.org/doc/apps/dialyzer/dialyzer_chapter.ht... which is a static analysis tool. This offers some non runtime type guarantees. But it is still a dynamically typed language. And the community is split on it IME. The errors are cryptic and there are some other issues. There's also Norm.

There are some things you can do to guarantee types during runtime, like match a function to a type. So when called with a string the implementation is different than with a boolean. So there are some run time type guarantees.

example of matching (return a diff string if bool or if nil):

def do_thing(n) when is_bool(n): "some boolean"

def do_thing(n) when is_nil(n): "nil"

There's also the concept of a struct which is like a typed object / map / key value pair thing.

hmmokidk··on Elixir at Ramp
I feel the same way about OO tbh. When everything is just functions + data types it's all much more easy to reason about and maintain.

I have no clue have LV scales. But I have yet to see a React application that doesn't drive me crazy with the amount of indirection and complexity!

hmmokidk··on Switching to Elixir
Live view has immensely less magic than react or nextjs.

In fact it's kind of crazy how much of it I understand given I haven't tried. The community is just all about simple tools and understanding them.

hmmokidk··on Things I like about Gleam's Syntax
I am way more productive with Elixir than any other stack i have tried. It’s actually insane. Things that seem almost unimaginable are so easy. Building an application that gets way larger than just a web app is so much more doable too. You’ve got everything you need right there and it’s so easy to organize in a conventional way. Testing every inch of it is so much easier.

It’s a brilliant technology. There’s a reason why there are so many evangelists.

So many people experience a new found joy of programming when they use Elixir.

And there are so many times I think “this would be so much easier” with Elixir when I work with other langs.

hmmokidk··on Unpacking Elixir: Observability
