hit8run··on MGL – OpenGL 4.6 on Metal
Nice to see that someone does apples job here… plain stupid for devs that they don’t support OpenGL.
hit8run··on Turbopack, the successor to Webpack
The webpacker rails 6 approach was a mistake that has been fixed with rails 7. Rails 7 offers a very good solution.
hit8run··on From zero to 10M lines of Kotlin
Delete Facebook.
hit8run··on Stop Scanning Me
The situation in Europe is very bad. We have a conglomerate of corrupt people in power positions that are waiving anything their lobbies want them to. Living in Germany is the worst with the new government. They manage to destroy every form of wealth the citizens had. Decisions are made based on stubborn ideology and not on what’s best for the country. If you’re living in the US and ever thought your politicians are bad I invite you to have a look at Germany. Very weird country.
hit8run··on Ableton Note – A playable iOS app for forming musical ideas
I love Ableton. They simply offer the best workflow. I use it for more than 10 years and I can reproduce almost every sound I hear in a song and quickly compose anything that comes to my mind. I also bought Logic but it just didn't click for me.
hit8run··on Codeberg: A GitHub alternative from Europe
At this point why not just use a repo on one’s own server and have everything under control. No other party involved.
hit8run··on Helix: A Neovim inspired editor, written in Rust
Tried it a year ago or so and liked it. Offers smart defaults.
hit8run··on A near-disaster at a nuclear weapons lab takes toll on America’s arsenal (2017)
Be the change you want to see.
hit8run··on A near-disaster at a nuclear weapons lab takes toll on America’s arsenal (2017)
Maybe just stop building nuclear weapons!? The last thing the world needs is more of this shit.
hit8run··on DALL·E Now Available Without Waitlist
F$ Microsoft and their shady move to lock openai. To be honest I am not interested in their offering. Yes they were fast. But there are also many true open source models available now. I don't want Microsoft to decide what I am allowed to do with it. Also they hide usable features behind a very expensive paywall and limit the budget to something like 25$ per month LOL. So actually they are like: "Here is a glimpse of it. But build nothing with it for broader audience. We want to see what you come up with and then copy paste it into our own products."
hit8run··on 58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere
Line height 1.75 lol no thanks.
hit8run··on $ rm Important.txt (uh oh)
Can one also enable system bin for terminal (zsh)?
hit8run··on W3.css – A minimal alternative to Bootstrap
Good for minimal stuff that’s fire and forget. Their official GitHub Repo is not in sync with the latest release on their website. CSS classes often contain !important rules which makes it harder to customize. No use of css variables so good luck with darkmode. They don’t make use of flexbox or css grid. A
hit8run··on Serving a high-performance blog solely from memory, using Rust
Can you use more rust to serve the 7 readers of a blog? You know what: use caching or something that compiles to plain html (hugo, jekyll etc.). No need for hardcore memory optimization.
hit8run··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
Former SAP employee here. The ERP market is ridiculously complex. Legislation, TAX, complex organisational structures and a million things to get wrong. One of SAPs hidden superpowers in my opinion was and probably still is ABAP and the GUI Builder. The combination of the two enabled consultants to create dynamic internal applications with little effort smoothly integrated into the whole system. So they were doing low-code way before it was a thing in our industry. As you can see the blog authors (retool) try to achieve something similar 40 years later and it is still a challenge.
hit8run··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
I think he was one of Englands greatest child molesters.
hit8run··on Elixir – Phoenix LiveView Native
Interesting perspective that resonates with me. What do you think of firebase + flutter with regards to single dev empowerment and entry barriers?
hit8run··on Slack’s free plan change is causing an exodus
ffs just use IRC. Not proprietary. You can host it yourself. All your base are belong to… yourself.
hit8run··on Design the next iPhone
I ejected from this status game and went utilitarian: iPhone SE 3.
hit8run··on Labstack/echo: High performance, minimalist Go web framework
Wanted to say the same! Standard handler signature is quite helpful.
hit8run··on Autodesk criticised by 35 named architects (2020)
Well kids. That’s why you don’t want an uncached CMS. Error establishing database connection…
hit8run··on Go 1.19 Released
Useless comment. What framework you use?
hit8run··on Go 1.19 Released
I like go and I can program it very well. But for full stack web dev Rails is still my go to choice. Less headaches. I don’t need to setup everything by myself (sql layer, middlewares, background jobs, validation patterns, i18n, authentication, authorization, security concerns, caching, mailing, migrations and a million other things).

There’s just nothing comparable from a developers productivity perspective to what Rails offers.

Would I write a command line tool in Go? For sure.

How do others think about Go for web dev?

hit8run··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
Wow. One can never satisfy these woke little know it alls hah?
hit8run··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
Apparently the person who downvoted does
hit8run··on Python is Actually Portable
Fits on every usb drive lol
hit8run··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
No one needs Zuckerberg and his shitty services.
hit8run··on Crystal 1.5
Congratulations on 1.5. An interesting language that I personally enjoyed when toying around. I like the approach to "meta"-programming via macros.
hit8run··on AWS open sourced the AWS console design system
It is interesting that you automatically assume that I didn't have many touchpoints with JS just because I don't get the hype.

Actually quite the opposite is the case. I was happily writing loads of vanillajs, tons of Angular(1) and wrote several years codebases in emberjs. Besides that I worked with Vue and yes also React once.

React brought nothing to the table that was helping me ship faster and make less unimportant decisions. Back when I had to touch react every week there was a new flavour how to handle routing, state, validate forms and sync to the backend. Ember and Angular had a good default there and were not harder to use.

(Nowadays I tend to stay away from fat js frameworks but mainly because I went indie dev and need to be resource efficient building full stack apps with Rails. But that is a different story. And yes I worked with Go, Python, Java and C# in the backend too.)

hit8run··on AWS open sourced the AWS console design system
Why is react so popular? It’s just covering a small part of the stack and doesn’t bring much to the table? There were so many other solutions before and so many other solutions now. Are people attracted by the name Zuckerberg? Srsly I don’t get the react hype. Didn’t get it 7 years ago. Don’t get it now…
