hipsters_unite··on Forgotten by the Future, Some Take the Internet Into Their Own Hands
I hope this works - I'm sure plenty of people in Manchester would be prepared to get rid of their existing provider if this succeeds elsewhere in the county.
hipsters_unite··on If You’re Thinking of Launching a Social Media Startup, Please Don’t
While it's all been said before I did enjoy the article more than the title suggested I would. Plus the point about having a valid revenue stream is always worth hammering home again.
hipsters_unite··on Startups – Do Not Jump Over The Hills
TL;DR: "I'm not being heard through the noise! Time to complain." The sense of entitlement in this post is offputting, I agree.
hipsters_unite··on As 3D Printing Becomes More Accessible, Copyright Questions Arise
It's fascinating that physical goods manufacturing might soon have to deal with the same problems as the content creators at the bleeding edge.

Despite the terrible Microsoft execution, I think there is a real issue here about privacy... it's just that nobody in their right mind is going to weigh in just because Microsoft tells them to.

People are getting more aware of what happens to their data - and concerned about it - and while a political solution will probably be cackhanded, the tech community can surely do better than giants slogging it out over soundbites.

hipsters_unite··on Subtome: a better subscribe button
Long suspected that aggregating all sorts of feeds from across the internet in a simpler (read: more accessible) way than RSS is a potentially huge growth area. This looks like a good step in the right direction.
hipsters_unite··on I'm a 30 year old with no experience, I want to build a startup
>"it seemed a bit slow and thorough for what I'm trying to do"

Okay, so as somebody who quit their job to learn to code (I just didn't realise that was what I was doing at the time), I'll say: if you are going to code you have to be thorough. Codeacademy is a good start. I began by doing pretty much everything on that site in a couple of 8hrs/day 7-day weeks. From there, Treehouse, Zed, books, blogs, StackOverflow... there are a hundred ways.

Bottom line: if you want to be a technical founder you've got to commit to learning the hard way, be passionate and determined. Non-technical, you should read and type along to something like Michael Hartl's Rails Tutorial book so at least you've got your hands dirty with code and can understand how it works when working with a co-founder. For a brief intro to simple web apps, you might try the Essential PHP with MySQL course on Lynda.com as you can see the inner workings of CRUD etc.

I've been at it six months and I can hang out with devs and talk shop, no problems. You could probably get to where I've done quicker too. Good luck!

hipsters_unite··on Stop the music money stream scream: C.R.E.A.M.
Pretty well-balanced article. Like in the 'bad old days' the mega-artists that appeal to the mass market are the ones reaping the rewards of economies of scale.
hipsters_unite··on Who speaks Latin these days?
Read that article and replace every instance of 'Latin' with whichever programming language is least 'cool' this week. Way better.
hipsters_unite··on Web Development: A Crazy World
> "The hiring market is segmented by too many technologies for me to claim to be an expert at?"

I think that's a concern to many new programmers (myself included) when looking at the pace these tools and frameworks are coming out and then maturing.

hipsters_unite··on Show HN: Our weekend project – Daily doses of inspiration
How are all of the pages generated? Are they all curated user submissions?
hipsters_unite··on EU Data Protection: Proposed Amendments Written by US Lobbyists
Politician in "doesn't understand the internet" shock. It's an old story, I agree. Like when they wanted to "turn off Twitter" during the riots...
hipsters_unite··on About Not Owning Sh*t
That's exactly what I thought- I don't own much, but if you're a musician you have a guitar, an amp, some pedals, some cables... and I read, so I have some books... and I like music, so some records... could call it 'shit', but it's hardly the end of the world.
hipsters_unite··on EU Data Protection: Proposed Amendments Written by US Lobbyists
The audaciousness of taking those lobbyists' demands word-for-word and expecting nobody to find out in this day and age is pretty shocking.
hipsters_unite··on In the future, all space marines will be Warhammer 40K space marines
Ditto. Still have fond memories of GW from my pre-teens. That they'd do this really offends my adult (sci-fi reading) self.
hipsters_unite··on Learning to Code: Lessons from building a simple Rails app with Treehouse
The Hartl tutorial does start with static pages (in fact I believe that's actually the name of Chapter 3), but fair play - I hear good things about the Prag Prog book too.
hipsters_unite··on Learning to Code: Lessons from building a simple Rails app with Treehouse
While this is an interesting case (having done the Treehouse tutorial myself), I've got to say that you can't beat Michael Hartl's book for a decent intro to working with Rails.
hipsters_unite··on SoundCloud without the stupid CSS files
Agreed, the new design is better but the autoplay feature is frankly baffling - doubly so when you consider the lack of curation/low quality/irrelevance of 'related' tracks.
hipsters_unite··on The Atlantic posts sponsored Scientology story, moderates comments
I don't know. Although we are talking tail end of the 90s, there's passing reference in No Logo/The Shock Doctrine (forget which, but think the former) by Naomi Klein to lifestyle marketers that would follow a couple of people in their target demo around without their knowledge.
