hieronymusN··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
I think that my $25 will keep Flickr/Yahoo from pulling the same shenanigans Instagram currently is (I've been using Flickr since 2006, just went Pro today). And for that $25 I get a hell of a lot more features than Instagram ever provided (privacy, API, full size photos, etc). All my photos are stored on my phone or hard drive, Flickr is just for sharing. Seriously.
hieronymusN··on Ask HN: Any other readers Not working in a web-based start-up?
I build internal web applications and services for an insurance company. Not a startup, but not a big company either. We like to play with technology a lot, and since we're a JVM shop we've been sneaking in some Clojure apps. The core products we're working with may be boring, but we keep the job sharp and interesting.
hieronymusN··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
I fully understand that with a free product, I am the product. I go into that with eyes open, and happily used Instagram assuming they would eventually start serving ads near the photos, promoting photos or similar. However, using my photos as ads seems a bit of a stretch. So, I just happily gave Flickr $25 after deleting my Instagram account. Some things are worth paying for, because sometimes I don't want to be the product.

hieronymusN··on A painful Apple recall process
For the 2009 models you can remove the front glass with suctions cups. You can get the suction cups from Bed, Beth & Beyond. Removing the screen itself is trickier and requires undoing a lot of screws.
hieronymusN··on A painful Apple recall process
Agreed. Apple has replaced two logic boards in an old MBP (one for bad video card and one for fried firmware), the drives in my iMacs and swapped out a faulty power supply for an old Mini. I've found that if you're polite and competent the Geniuses will help you out. Doing some preemptive research and work like making sure you have backups, etc also goes a long way to ensuring a smooth experience.
hieronymusN··on A painful Apple recall process
I have two 27" iMacs under this recall and I live in Brooklyn. I simply called Apple and told them it would not be possible to transport these iMacs to a store in Manhattan for servicing as I do not own a car (which I don't). They sent a service person to my house to do the drive swap. The tech was a 3rd party contractor and highly knowledgeable. We had a good discussion about the engineering in the iMacs as well as the current state of tech.

In short, I called Apple and politely walked through the issues and they did not hesitate to help me out, even after noting that I lived geographically close to many Apple stores (Grand Central, 5th Ave, etc), but also acknowledged the difficulties in actually getting to them.

hieronymusN··on IE10 won't run Flash unless website is whitelisted by Microsoft
Developers, myself included, may not care about IE as a browser, but the vast majority of the people using my web applications most certainly do as they are using IE. So I care about IE in that I have to field a lot of support requests for it and ensure that the JavaScript I wrote doesn't bomb out on a dangling comma. Those IE users also pay my employer a lot of money to use those web applications to get their jobs done. So yes, people, as in civilian non-developers, do care about IE, quite a bit in fact.
hieronymusN··on SassMe: Visualize SASS color functions in real-time without compiling
You're right - we have a subtle math bug (JavaScript not known for its math precision..) SASS takes colors out to three decimal places, which we weren't. Will be pushing the fix to both GitHub and the live site shortly, along with some rendering fixes for IE8/9.

Updated: fixed on GitHub - https://github.com/arc90/sass-color-picker/commit/4b2fc4fcad...

hieronymusN··on SassMe: Visualize SASS color functions in real-time without compiling
Darken/Lighten adjust the L (lightness) value in the HSL representation of the color.

Saturate/Desaturation does the same for the S (saturation) value in the HSL representation of the color.

Adjust_Hue moves the hue of the color (H in HSL) around a 360 degree color wheel. (from 0 - 360)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV

If you look at how SASS handles colors under the hood, then yeah, that's how it does it.

Just to nitpick, the bit at the end about tattoos contains a lot of BS. You can't burn them off with hot coals (unless you want to take your skin with it via 3rd degree burns), and it takes more than 100 hours to get a body suit. Just sayin. Sounds like the guy was fed a line of BS and bought it. Go with Jake Adelstein's writings on the matter as he lays it out pretty bare.
hieronymusN··on The Cheapest Generation
Counterpoint: I live in NYC because I don't like driving and hate commuting. If I was into cars and houses, I would live in California or Texas.
hieronymusN··on The Cheapest Generation
It all depends on where you live and what your local market is like. I have a kid, and still don't need a car or house. I also live in NYC, so it's easy to do that. If I lived someplace like Houston, where there is almost zero public transport and houses are crazy cheap I might rethink things. That said, don't buy into social groupthink, don't buy a house if it doesn't fit your sensibilities.
hieronymusN··on The Cheapest Generation
This is because our current economy is skewed towards consumption with real estate and cars as the primary metric. I agree, I don't see it as a negative. I'm Gen X and I don't own a house or car.
hieronymusN··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
This isn't nearly as terrifying as the Cold War with the USSR. We're not threatened with nuclear war, nor having the near misses that could trigger it (Cuban missile crisis). No one is building bomb shelters in their backyards, because right now the balance of power is very much in the United States' favor.

Could things get there with another nuclear enabled power like China? Maybe, in time. Iran is not an existential threat to the US, not anywhere close to what the Soviets were. The Israelis see things differently I'm sure, but this is far from the situation in 60s - 80s.

hieronymusN··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
To play Devil's Advocate: How did they "fuck up big time"? From what I can tell from press coverage Stuxnet did exactly what it was supposed to do - damage centrifuges at Natanz.
hieronymusN··on Adobe & HTML
Books are designed. Lots of consideration is put into the typography, layout, rhythm and form of printed books, and those design choices stretch back over a hundred years. There is much more at play than "justification, and paragraphs, and if you're lucky a nice font."

hieronymusN··on Why Generation Y Is Causing The Great Migration Of The 21st Century
As a former Houstonian (and Montrose denizen), the one problem here is that there is a very good chance your job will not be in Lower Westheimer or Downtown. Which means you could very well be spending an hour on I-10 headed out to the energy corridor to work for one of the Big Oil companies.

Houston is a great 'secret city' that few know about, but the effects of its lack of public transport (insane traffic on the freeways) can be seen daily.

But you are correct, If I was to move back down there I would immediately try to get a place in the Heights or Montrose.

hieronymusN··on Why Generation Y Is Causing The Great Migration Of The 21st Century
The Houston Metro area grew 26.1% from 2000 - 2010 , http://www.houston.org/pdf/research/09AW010.pdf [PDF] so yes, not all cities grow along the same lines.

hieronymusN··on Advice From An Old Programmer
I'm a web developer in a marketing company. What you said is partially true, especially if your management doesn't really understand development (highly likely.) However, if you are able to look at the work that comes down, and come up with better ways to do it and engage management (rather than just being a set of hands to do their bidding) you can increase your value. You will never be as valued as you would be at a tech company, but you can try.

That said, there are a number of small development companies that focus on marketing. Meaning, they are small developer run companies that take on contract code work for marketing firms (mobile apps, HTML5, etc.) and they are by default developer friendly. If you're a good dev being beaten down by management in a marketing firm, then either find one of these companies or go start your own.

Hi edw519 - that was me.

I also made a slightly reformatted HTML version here http://static.v25media.com/edw519_mod.html - I just added anchor links so it was easier to navigate the sections and such.

Thanks for putting that all together, it's been an inspiration. Looking forward to Raganwald's as well.

hieronymusN··on Court Overturns Conviction of Ex-Goldman Programmer
It appears his acquittal was based on a technicality (language within the Economic Espionage Act) and he has pretty much admitted that he did something wrong (uploaded it to a server in Germany to bypass Goldman's security):

At trial, Mr. Marino, the lawyer for Mr. Aleynikov,
acknowledge that his client breached Goldman’s
confidentiality agreements, but insisted that he did not
  commit a crime.
So, it would seem that Goldman should rightly be rather upset about this, as much as I dislike Goldman, they seem to be in the right here?
