hidelooktropic··on Anthropic Cowork feature creates 10GB VM bundle on macOS without warning
Not sure what you have against it. Works great for me. No subscription required. And if I do want to pay for ad free shows and support creators it's easy to do so.

Use whatever you like but I don't think Podcast app users are rare by any stretch of the imagination.

hidelooktropic··on I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla
Yes. I want AI in some things (some)
hidelooktropic··on The English language doesn't exist – it's just French that's badly pronounced
You might want to review the influence of William the conqueror on the English language.

How can I get early access to this "Human" model on the benchmarks? /s
hidelooktropic··on Qwen3 30B A3B Hits 13 token/s on 4xRaspberry Pi 5
13/s is not slow. Q4 is not bad. The models that run on phones are never 30B or anywhere close to that.
hidelooktropic··on 996
Do those of us not cool enough to know already get to find out what 996 means?
hidelooktropic··on A poet's long-forgotten daughter created the first algorithm
She was long forgotten. Her notoriety is actually a recent phenomenon.

Unfortunately the GPL license makes it dead in the water for using something like this at work

hidelooktropic··on Alto turns your Apple Notes into a website
Notes is a writing tool that approachable and easy to use. It also works across the ecosystem on a syncing platform I already pay for and whose privacy I am comfortable with. I like the idea of setting up a simple text based website without needing to adopt a new editor. That's plenty value prop to me.
hidelooktropic··on Python classes aren’t always the best solution
Correct, the examples here are not real. They are examples.
hidelooktropic··on Python classes aren’t always the best solution
To be clear, "You might not need" does not mean "You shouldn't use"
hidelooktropic··on Python classes aren’t always the best solution
I thought readers would understand that an alternative to a class just meant you don't have to create one from scratch. Maybe not.
hidelooktropic··on Python classes aren’t always the best solution
Thanks, @dang
hidelooktropic··on Python classes aren’t always the best solution
True. Same could be said of namedtuples.
hidelooktropic··on Local-first software (2019)
I mostly agree with this, but sometimes it's not that simple in practice. I created an app that did exactly this and it resulted in inevitable file conflicts because I couldn't negotiate between the clients when a file should be allowed for editing.

hidelooktropic··on Waymo rides cost more than Uber or Lyft and people are paying anyway
The Uber comfort designation frustratingly has nothing to do with the condition of the vehicle. I believe the parameters are age, seats, and model.

From the driver's point of view, it just means that you are allowed to accept comfort rides but most of the time you're probably going to be picking up UberX passengers which are more plentiful. That means you're only slightly more likely to get one of the good comfort vehicles if you actually select the comfort tier.

hidelooktropic··on GitHub Copilot Coding Agent
UX-wise...

I kind of love the idea that all of this works in the familiar flow of raising an issue and having a magic coder swoop in and making a pull request.

At the same time, I have been spoiled by Cursor. I feel I would end up preferring that the magic coder is right there with me in the IDE where I can run things and make adjustments without having to do a followup request or comment on a line.

hidelooktropic··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
They said "so many" meaning a subset, and there are tariffs on other countries.
hidelooktropic··on Berkeley Humanoid Lite – Open-source robot
How does that work for things like taking out the trash, doing dishes, and folding laundry?
hidelooktropic··on Thank HN: The puzzle game I posted here 6 weeks ago got licensed by The Atlantic
Exciting news! I recently launched a daily puzzle game I created based on an idea I had in the shower: (https://everything.io) I’ve been seeing lots of people here sharing their projects, and it’s been inspiring—some seriously cool ideas out there!

My game is a bit different—it’s all about combining emojis to find the hidden emoji. Sometimes it’s wordplay, sometimes conceptual, and sometimes just plain silly.

Congrats to everyone building and sharing—loving the creativity here!

hidelooktropic··on Bare: Run JavaScript Everywhere
Same. The "runs on mobile" part I assume is Android only? How do I develop something for iOS that uses Bear? Seems like a limitation they wouldn't be able to lift but maybe I'm missing something

Update: from home page

> Built for Mobile > Embedding a JavaScript runtime on mobile is easy with Bare Kit. Bare Kit allows you to create "worklets" or isolated Bare threads which expose an IPC with bindings for Android and iOS. With React Native, you install `react-native-bare-kit` and create a `Worklet` instance passing the JavaScript you want to run.

So not an April Fools joke?
hidelooktropic··on Microsoft quantum computing claim still lacks evidence
I'm not defending Microsoft but "scam" is probably the wrong label for what they did. Nothing was literally sold to anyone. They made a misleading announcement about progress they supposedly made.
hidelooktropic··on Show HN: The creative emoji storytelling game
Yes!!!
hidelooktropic··on Show HN: I built didtheyghost.me, open-source tool for your next job search
I would love it if this tool exposes job postings where the company has no intention of actually filling them, just trying to collect resumes. But does it do this?
hidelooktropic··on Vtm: Text-Based Desktop Environment
Yeah. Am I missing the point that this leans so far into being as capable as a GUI as it can, that we lose something from starting in the terminal in the first place?
