hi-v-rocknroll··on Valkey achieved one million RPS 6 months after forking from Redis
KeyDB is awesome. Works great.
hi-v-rocknroll··on We spent $20 to achieve RCE and accidentally became the admins of .mobi
It's grotesquely insecure and not authoritative to rely on rando, unsecured WHOIS in the clear scraping contact details to "authenticate" domain ownership rather than ask the owner to provide a challenge cookie by DNS or hosted in content.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Sextortion scam includes new threat of Pegasus–and a picture of your home
Probably because the boiler room indentured servant/foreign imported slave the scammer criminal gangs maintain would have difficulty extracting money from a mark with any level of sophistication or agency.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Ex-CIA Officer Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Espionage on Behalf of China
There appears to be a cultural misunderstanding non-Chinese people aren't always able to fully appreciate or apply with nuance: There are some culturally (Han and other) Chinese people who feel greatest loyalty to ethno-national Chinese diaspora takes precedence over wherever else they're at, even if they become a citizen somewhere else. Furthermore, people who have been somewhere ~ 2-8 generations can span the gamut between assimilating or choosing not to. (There are nonzero very old, multigenerational Chinese families in California who don't speak any English.) I don't know but perhaps the CIA needs to work on its cultural intelligence, HUMINT, and opsec.
hi-v-rocknroll··on How economical is your local Taco Bell?
Since fast food access correlates positively with increasing local rates of diabetes and obesity, perhaps they should only be allowed a minimum distance from residential areas (and also a minimum distance from schools too).
hi-v-rocknroll··on US Gov Removing Four-Year-Degree Requirements for Cyber Jobs
This can be problematic in software engineering and real engineering roles.

I've worked at shops where they overpaid people but hired folks who didn't have CS degrees so they didn't understand time-space tradeoffs, algorithms, data structures, or how anything worked under the hood... they were just there to collect paychecks, lacked curiosity and pride for the craft, and went home.

hi-v-rocknroll··on DOjS – A DOS JavaScript Canvas with Sound
Nawh, I already have one.
hi-v-rocknroll··on My Homelab Setup
That's not the point. The point is fast links 10-100 GbE.
hi-v-rocknroll··on OpenSSH Keystroke Obfuscation Bypass
Perhaps instead shooting off individual keypresses with some random chaff packets, it would be wiser to have constant interval, constant low data rate, (say 8 KBps) data rate trickling packets through and let the other side throw away pick out the needles from the haystack of no ops. Good luck finding a side-channel in that.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Swiss BMW Driver Slammed with $116,000 Tailgating Fine Because He's Rich
Compared to the person making minimum wage (say $11/hr) receiving a $450 fine paid on an installment plan, I think this sends the right message.

Income proportional fines should also have an alternative minimum fine that weighs their entire liquid balance sheet value because it's entirely possible decamillionaires to billionaires keep their live expenses allowances low compared to vast assets they control.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Ask HN: Why is Pave legal?
They already expect people to work for next to nothing simply because they're "startups". Instead, maybe they should focus on hiring decent people AND paying them industry-fair wages.
hi-v-rocknroll··on My Homelab Setup
Pricey appliance-oriented development. And no fiber, which is critical for internet to home primary switch. And at least go with 10 GbE PoE+ for WiFi 7 APs. Non-cloud DVR security cameras are fine with ordinary PoE and 1 GbE (because cloud only WiFi cameras are inherently insecure).

I can haz a Unifi VM that works just fine running under VMware ESXi 7 (old) for free, along with a Samba and NFS NAS, Plex, PlexAmp, Transmission (with Deluge as a backup), RustDesk (on Docker), Docker and K8s boxes, and whatever else I want to throw at it. Those all run on a 512 GiB 96 thread box attached to a SAS 3 4U JBOD with 45 HDDs with PCIe passthrough to the NAS VM. 2 UPSes with 2 2U expander battery packs each; I probably should move to some sort of LiFePO4 UPS at some point.

Router is 10 GbE DECISO 740 OPNsense with Wireguard and IPv4/6 dual stack everywhere. Fast, configurable, and works.

Also have 2 dedicated 7950X3D boxes with 2x 100 GbE each for network load testing and development. 400 GbE maybe soon.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Tesla FSD no longer offered for purchase
There are multiple matters being conflated together.

0. Tempering customer expectations from overpromising.

1. Investors' concerns about liabilities of advertising autonomous operation, potentially implicitly implying unsupervised.

2. Culpability of drivers when "supervised" (within visual sight) operation fails in a manner that's not immediately physically controllable. What if summon runs into a person or runs over a pet?

3. Potentially replacing "original FSD" with a lower tier substitute at the same price point, or as a subscription only.

While I might jump to 3, 0 and 1 seem the most likely. 2 is still remains a big question mark.

hi-v-rocknroll··on DOjS – A DOS JavaScript Canvas with Sound
Time to fire up the Diamond Stealth Pro VLB 2 MiB on a socket 3 monster. :)
hi-v-rocknroll··on Microsoft Rolled Out AI PCs That Can't Play Top Games–and There's No Quick Fix
Bigger picture: I don't understand why MSFT would want to compete in what's ultimate a low-margin, commodity business that many others have exited. Are these loss-leaders not of sufficient quality, availability, or to their liking and so they need to have a choice available to push the software stack?
hi-v-rocknroll··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
Product from China in particular, what is sold as "red" is often red-orange.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Debian Developers Figuring Out Plan for Removing More Unmaintained Packages
When consumer culture infects engineering, it leads to pointless effort when security isn't an issue but the motivation is instead "new and shiny" rather than "it works but doesn't suffer from continual churn of minimal value, code bloat, the risks of large code changes for new features, or the churn of radical rewrites". Code that works now doesn't magically cease to work at any point in the future due to lack of "maintenance"; it's only when the assumption that all off its dependencies and tools must break it by design leads to an artificial need for maintenance. It's really a jobs program without adding significant new value.
hi-v-rocknroll··on EUCLEAK Side-Channel Attack on the YubiKey 5 Series
5.4.3 5C Nano here.

> L. So, Yubico is providing _free_ replacements, right?

Nope, mitigations. :(

hi-v-rocknroll··on Why bother with argv[0]?
coreutils-static did this too. The advantage of shared libraries and multiple-use single static binaries is they're only loaded once.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Why bother with argv[0]?
Arguing against legacy quirks is arguing against compatibility and arguing for throwing away decades of code portability guarantees through 20/20 hindsight perfectionism failing to consider the costs and burdens of reimagining the world with bikeshedding rants.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Steve Ballmer's incorrect binary search interview question
Ballmer was good at riding coat-tails of others as a supporting figure but eventually started running MSFT into the ground. He demanded to personally evaluate every M&A activity >$10M. No bueno.
hi-v-rocknroll··on Steve Ballmer's incorrect binary search interview question
Yep. Pigeonholing by narrow thinking individuals who aren't accustomed to ambiguity or lateral thinking, especially when exhibit talents in more than just technical areas, a person becomes "nontechnical" to a nonzero proportion of technical people while remaining "too technical" for a large fraction of business people.

PS: Recruiters generally come from the same cloth as car sales and sports, so they're not usually going to be the sharpest pencils in the drawer.

hi-v-rocknroll··on From Julia to Rust (2021)
In the "and Rust can be used for X" department:

Add new builtins to Bash using a shared library (or .bundle on macOS) written in Rust. Bash also allows running bash other commands from native code. (There's a rust crate for creating bash builtins, but it doesn't currently compile on mac due to some improper and some missing linker flags.)

hi-v-rocknroll··on TP-Link Breaks $100 Price Barrier with Its New Wi-Fi 7 Router
1. Use a reliable and separate FOSS router like a physical OPNsense (Deciso DEC740 or DEC850).

2. Use above router to VLAN (or use a physically-separate interface and network topology) and isolate less trusted devices.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Type 2 diabetes drug associated with 35% lower risk of dementia, study finds
Article:

- SGLT-2 inhibitors: canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, sotagliflozin, bexagliflozin

- DPP-4 inhibitors: sitagliptin, saxagliptin, linagliptin

Other beneficial drugs beyond/with/for diabetes and/or weight:

- Metformin

- AGIs: acarbose

- GLP-1 agonists: tirzepatide, semaglutide, liraglutide

- DACRAs: cagrilintide

Maybe in the future it will be possible to manage a person's glucose and related hormone levels in roughly a continuous keto or borderline low blood sugar state using the equivalent of an "insulin pump" and a real-time blood glucose monitor control system such that it doesn't promote low-blood sugar neurological symptoms.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Is there any way HN can implement a 'paywall tag' to save wasted clicks?

hi-v-rocknroll··on Can a Closed Nuclear Power Plant from the '70s Be Brought Back to Life?
Disclaimer: I worked a nuclear shop of ex-GE folks in the 90's.

It feeds an all-too-common techno-religious obsession rather than big-picture economic and risk management for specific projects in specific locations. One of the biggest hurdles and costliest aspects of proposing nuclear projects in the US is getting insurance first for construction and then operation, and the few insurers who can cover them aren't going to underwrite risky projects. It's so much simpler and cheaper to put up solar and wind nowadays that it doesn't make any sense compared to the past when renewables were very expensive. Renewables are the path of least resistance. Centralized and distributed grid storage in various forms then becomes a bonus feature that allows for more resiliency under load and unplanned outages.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Frontier is about to offer 7-gig fiber across several states
Google Fiber offers 8 Gbps in Austin for half the price. They're also piloting 20 Gbps in some areas.[0] I wished it were available where I live because the only maximum options currently available are 1 Gbps through either GVEC (fiber) or Spectrum (cable). Spectrum is slow and has outages occasionally. GVEC lacks useful information on their website and hides pricing.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Linux Pipes Are Slow
Citation needed.

Pipes aren't used everywhere in production in hot paths. That just doesn't happen.

hi-v-rocknroll··on Database “sharding” came from Ultima Online? (2009)
Offtopic: One of my college roommates made ~$5k USD from macroing the creation of items like gold in UO for resale. Maybe that's another kind of sharding?
