heywire··on The CrowdStrike file that broke everything was full of null characters?
The number of times I encounter issues with Visual Studio not being able to write to the file I just compiled, ugh... We've even got an mt.exe wrapper that adds retries because AV likes to grab hold of newly created binaries right around the time mt.exe needs to write to it. Even our CI build process ends up failing randomly due to this.
heywire··on Story points are pointless, measure queues
Yep
heywire··on Reading my electric meter with RTLSDR
Yeah, it looks like ours are too (Itron Gen5). So I’ve pivoted to using “AI on the edge” with an ESP32 Cam to read my water meter. I already have an Emporia Vue monitoring my electricity usage, so I’m good there.
heywire··on Story points are pointless, measure queues
They’re working on other projects. Whether it is testing a general release for a customer, testing bug fixes, or testing a recently completed customization project.
heywire··on Story points are pointless, measure queues
Is there anyone else out there still doing waterfall and estimating in hours and everything is just going fine, or am I just that lucky?

I work on a small professional services team customizing a couple of our products for our customers. A few times a month we get a request for an estimate to add a new feature or workflow. We do a high level customer requirements doc, discuss it as a team, the seniors from each area (design, development, qa) each provide an estimate in a range of hours. This all gets wrapped up into a final price to the customer. If they approve it, we dive into detailed design and have them sign off on the result. Then we go into development for weeks to months, qa, and then release. Our processes really haven’t changed in over 20 years. We’re constantly ranked as one of the most productive teams, and get high scores on our post-project surveys from our customers.

heywire··on Reading my electric meter with RTLSDR
I agree. Right around the time I figured out the format of the data from my Elster electric meter, they enabled encryption across the mesh network. Luckily the water meters remained in the clear, and our natural gas utility uses Itron, which are easily read with rtlamr (like OP describes)

I actually have an appointment this week to have our electric and water meters replaced, as our utilities are managed by the city and they’ve switched to a new provider. I think they’re putting in Itron, and I’m hopeful readings can be picked up by rtlamr.

heywire··on PySkyWiFi: Free stupid wi-fi on long-haul flights
I called in and complained about an awkward romance novel cover ad a few years ago and they disabled ads for me for free.
heywire··on Family fight Samsung over fridge odour they say caused dizziness and memory loss
Whirlpool has worked out well for us. Had one for 10+ years in the last house and 3 years in this one, both without any issues.
heywire··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
Personal finance application, use it weekly.

Plenty of scripts and stuff to automate and data log various things in our household.

heywire··on Block AI bots, scrapers and crawlers with a single click
Kind of makes me want to build a dynamic web server that spews plausible garbage to poison their training set. Probably a bit like peeing in the ocean though.
heywire··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
It’s not hard at all. In fact, I use an iPhone, and they have an iMessage “service” or whatever it is called where I just text them for account related things. Every year I text them for a discounted renewal on my wife’s car. Last year I cancelled service on my car because I just wasn’t using it often enough. Of course they started offering a discounted price, but when I countered that I’m just not using it, they completed the cancellation without issue. Guess I’ve been lucky.
heywire··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
I know this wasn’t really your point, but most physicians around me use Epic MyChart, so I can book all that online. I also almost exclusively use email to communicate with our school district, and we’re in a small town.
heywire··on Microsoft Issues New Warning for 70% of All Windows Users
Big push in the retail POS space
heywire··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
Correction: my work laptop is a Precision 3571 (used to have a 3520).
heywire··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
I have both a Latitude 7370 for personal use and a Precision 3520 for work. Lugging that Precision around is a pain in the butt. It is big and bulky, noisy and hot. That said, as my eyes continue to age, the 13” screen of my Latitude does seem smaller than it once was, though the crispness of the 3200x1800 is much better than the grainy 1080p in the Precision. And I do miss the number pad sometimes. My perfect form factor these days would probably be a 14-15” in a similar profile as my Latitude (it is essentially a poor man’s XPS 13).
heywire··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
Touché. I was thinking Asahi / M1.
heywire··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
My Latitude 7370 is just about perfect. With gnome power profiles, I can easily switch between power saver, balanced, and performance, suspend/resume works fine. All peripherals work out of the box. It has a crisp 3200x1800 touchscreen that works great under Gnome. It is pretty much my perfect Linux laptop. I only wish the battery life was better, and that it had a more powerful CPU. It is fanless, so it throttles pretty quickly under load.

I ran some tests, and completely idle at 30% brightness I can get 7h under Linux and 8h under Windows, so Linux still has some room for improvement. But as someone who uses Windows at work, there is no way I could go back to that personally. Not unless they released an open source version completely cleaned of crapware and bloat. The Enterprise / IOT versions are the closest I’ve come to that.

heywire··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
What I want to know…can it run Linux? And can it run Linux better than a M3 MBA?

I don’t want Windows. I don’t want MacOS. I want a thin, efficient, fast, light, affordable replacement for my aging Latitude 7370 running Linux.

heywire··on Show HN: Spot – Simple, cross-platform, reactive desktop GUI toolkit for Go
I’ll have to give this a look! I’ve been looking for a simple way to use Go to write an internal development tool which is basically just a form with some buttons and text fields. I tried Gio, but had a hard time with wrapping my head around it. Right now I’m using wails and like it much better. This looks interesting and worth a look!
heywire··on Apple's risky bet on CarPlay
I’m happy with the way Mazda has integrated CarPlay. No touch while moving, the navigation wheel moves a highlight around the screen to select buttons/links. I find it much less distracting.
heywire··on Amazon ditches 'just walk out' checkouts at its grocery stores
Most of the retailers in my area have turned off the bag scale security. But I live in a pretty small town, so maybe theft is at an acceptable level where they’re willing to make that trade off. They’re also using more and more computer vision to ensure what passes into the cart is scanned (Everseen and others), so perhaps they’re finding better success with that than the bag scale.
heywire··on Kia recalls over 427K Telluride SUVs because they might roll away while parked
As the owner of a 2017 Tucson that drinks a qt of oil every 600 miles or so, I agree. So many stories in the Hyundai / Kia Engine Failures FB group. That’s not even mentioning the downright dangerous DCT (transmission)
heywire··on ShotSpotter: listening in on the neighborhood
Something along these same lines — I feel like I’m seeing those “Flock” cameras everywhere now. So between Shotspotter and Flock, you’re pretty much always under surveillance.
heywire··on FDA approves first medication to reduce allergic reactions to multiple foods
Somewhat related, I am allergic to an assortment of fruits and vegetables (celery, carrots, watermelon, cantaloupe, bananas, etc…). Most of my food allergies are related to Oral Allergy Syndrome. I’ve been taking Flonase now for more than a year for sinus congestion from allergies, and my food allergies have all but gone away. It has been great being able to enjoy these foods without my mouth, throat, and ears itching.
heywire··on Reverse-engineering an encrypted IoT protocol
Fantastic write up! Enjoyable read, and gave me some pointers.

Last I checked, AdGuard Home also did this.

heywire··on Microsoft Teams outage causes connection issues, message delays
We started seeing signs of issues Wednesday and Thursday with messages being out of order or disappearing and reappearing. Today has been much worse. Not even able to send images (though thankfully gifs still work lol).

Not sure if it is related, but in the same time period, Microsoft Family Safety has been flaky. My son will request more Xbox / PC time, I’ll get the notification, but inside the app there is no request to approve. Or I’ll get another notification hours later.

heywire··on What's that touchscreen in my room?
I’m happy with the Emporia Vue
heywire··on iMessage Key Verification
You sign into your personal Apple accounts on your work computer? Seems like a very bad idea to mix work and personal.
heywire··on Apple partly halts Beeper's iMessage app again, suggesting a long fight ahead
Almost 100% of my chat messages are through iMessage. The only ones that aren’t are group or individual threads with Android users (which btw have never seemed to be an issue. Reactions and gifs all seem to work fine, albeit in reduced quality compared to messages received via iMessage). Every once in a while someone will message me on Facebook, but that’s usually just to share a funny meme or something. I don’t have WhatsApp, signal, telegram, or any of those even installed.

40’s, male, Ohio, software engineer, for reference.

ETA: this doesn’t count work, where we use teams and slack, but I don’t have those loaded on my phone.
