hexa22··on Senators introduce bipartisan antitrust bill to promote app store competition
I’m fine with app restrictions as they are. The problem is even apps which do not do anything special get removed from the App Store for a ToS violation. You can not for example publish an app that lets you download YouTube videos for example even though this does not require much access to anything.
hexa22··on Australia is becoming a surveillance state
There are far bigger issues in Australia right now to care about meta data logging. Climate change and now the vaccine delay consume all of the publics attention.

Metadata logging is a theoretical issue while the lack of vaccine supplies is a very real and immediate issue.

hexa22··on The Economics of OnlyFans: Most accounts make less than $145/mo
I guess then google should fire all of the low performing youtubers (blocking them from the platform) and send out orders for what content each YouTuber will be making. Since they are employees of google, they should be making google approved content. I suspect most will like the old system.
hexa22··on The Economics of OnlyFans: Most accounts make less than $145/mo
What about the value the employer creates by setting up a platform, initial investments which lose money to draw in users, and taking on all the risk and paying the workers anyway if a particular video flops.

Only fans is also the alt path if you believe employers are not paying you your real value, now you can skip them and sell directly to the public. You might make more money or you might have nothing.

hexa22··on The Economics of OnlyFans: Most accounts make less than $145/mo
You don’t find people on patreon, you find them on other platforms and then pay money typically for some way to interact with big personalities. I doubt there is much demand for scrolling through an index page of strangers to pay them money.
hexa22··on Show HN: Reddit clone built in no-code in two weeks
Reddit’s reliability is a major point and it’s something that has actually gone better. As horrible as the new UI is, back when the old ui was the main one, the site would go down almost daily and often for hours at a time.
hexa22··on Show HN: Reddit clone built in no-code in two weeks
Isn’t no code and GUI software builders an idea that has been tried for decades? Wasn’t Adobe dream weaver one of the early tools?
hexa22··on Firefighters bring large battery fire near Geelong under control
What does this question even mean? What does paying for mean in this context? Are you asking if Elon takes the cost out of his personal bank account? Or if they send every tesla customer a bill for new battery tech?

What is the difference between the customer or tesla paying?

hexa22··on Steam survey shows Linux marketshare hitting 1.0%
Force feedback worked fine on project cars for me
hexa22··on One-Thousand Year-Old Plants
You can split up many plants in to individual pieces which will survive.
hexa22··on Google and Facebook mandate vaccines for employees at U.S. offices
Is there any research showing that these people should not get vaccinated?

At worst it does nothing, at best it helps. I don’t see why google should bother with an exception here.

hexa22··on Please Bring Back Our Downvotes: Society Desperately Needs It
This is because the moderators will often ban all disagreeing members. I’m not talking about trolls, but genuine and good faith discussion.

Saying something like you don’t agree that investment properties should be illegal is enough to get you banned in many parts of reddit.

hexa22··on Reimagined toilets at a South Korea university transform human waste into biogas
It’s an actual product. My grandma in Australia has had one for 10 years.

I’m guessing it never took off because we don’t have that much of a water shortage in most places that washing hands is a luxury.

hexa22··on MicroLEDs Moving from Lab to Fab
Just like how all SSDs will fail after enough writes. A problem that I will never stress over.

I have had many oled devices for many years and I have never once seen noticeable burn in like I have never had an ssd die.

I’m not denying it exists. But the scale of the problem and the time it takes to occur make it a non issue for most use cases.

hexa22··on Show HN: Website changes design each time you blink
No. These things are designed to turn on and off hundreds of times per second to emulate dimming.
hexa22··on Microsoft confirms taskbar in Windows 11 no longer supports drag and drop
I’m sure Microsoft has the stats that shows almost no one uses drag and drop
hexa22··on The Alexander: Why did you build such a long piano?
Also how much time can be wasted by not being alerted of the common pitfalls.
hexa22··on Online ID / age verification: the death of online search
Doxing is far greater than being canceled for a reddit comment. An open source dev recently got doxed and had 4channers banging on their house windows at night. Swatting and similar activity is also an extreme problem.
hexa22··on Online ID / age verification: the death of online search
Won’t block Firefox which uses encrypted DoH dns.
hexa22··on The strange, sketchy emails a browser extension developer receives
Extensions have sandboxing and permissions but to be able to do anything moderately useful you need access to literally everything.

For something as basic as an ad blocker or a theme loader you need full access to every page.

hexa22··on All public GitHub code was used in training Copilot
There is a second best though. Apple offers image AI which is worse than googles but wins because it works offline.
hexa22··on San Francisco recorded a 753 percent rise in car burglaries compared to May 2020
I saw one YouTuber build a bike that was structurally unsound and would fall apart just after the thief started riding it causing them to hit the ground.

The new Bluetooth tracker tags from apple and Samsung might also help.

hexa22··on Google no longer requires AMP, but the replacement might be worse
It takes less space so it downloads faster.
hexa22··on Google no longer requires AMP, but the replacement might be worse
Most sites would use the user agent for this but I’m pretty sure HTML now has a picture tag which can have multiple sources so the browser can pick the source it wants.
hexa22··on MyBook Users Urged to Unplug Devices from Internet
Your bank has robust backup systems. If it gets hacked they just untransfer the money.
hexa22··on MyBook Users Urged to Unplug Devices from Internet
There are no programmers that work on this WD product. That’s the problem. The company cut off support. Which is entirely a management decision. You can see when management values support you get secure software. How often do we find out about google drive breaches?
hexa22··on How to Make Your Landing Pages Look Like a Design Team Was Behind It
Those are tacky and done by non designers. The thin font thing is real though.
hexa22··on Fastmail accounts blocked in Russia, here's what we know
Fastmail seems to be the best provider currently. Have only been using them for a bit but had no issues.
hexa22··on Fedora contemplates the driverless printing future
And who will maintain this fork? For over a decade CUPS is the work of a single developer. No one is exactly lining up to maintain buggy printer drivers.
hexa22··on Want a killer product? Become more opinionated
There are certainly two use cases here. One is pasting complex blocks where you want the whole thing to copy over. And the other is copying text out of an email or website where you want it treated as dumb text.

Word actually offers a solution with the “paste without formatting” but it’s lost behind the million features of word.
