hettygreen··on The Enhanced Game – Sports, without drug testing
I know you got down-voted, but the whole website is definitely fishy. At first I was expecting it to be a campaign for selling "enhanced" supplements, but a high-effort satire to say "well, see how rediculous it is to let trans people compete in sports???" is plausible, sadly.
hettygreen··on The Enhanced Game – Sports, without drug testing
Why is the website so.. propaganda-ey?

It sounds like they're casting atheletes who willingly take banned substances as a persecuted minority group that we need to stand united for, on par with the fight for LGBT rights or something. It's all super-defensive, like it was started by a few atheletes that got caught. The section called "Science is Real" tries to cast anti-doping as anti-science.

Watch one of those documentaries on Lance Armstrong. Getting blood transfusions in the back of a van doesn't look fun.

But I'm all for it. Why stop at substances? Use CRISPR to give a swimmer some webbed-feet.

hettygreen··on The Banality of Genius: Notes on Peter Jackson's Get Back (2022)
For those that are interested in seeing artists conjure up hit songs, check out the documentary "Billie Eilish: The World's A Little Blurry". There are some scenes showing Billie and her brother sitting on a bed in their parents' house coming up with lyrics and melodies for songs that would go on to sell millions, win grammys and totally change their lives.

I'm a huge beatles fan, and while Get Back shows sparks of creativity - for the most part it, it shows a few childish rich dudes high as all hell dicking around in front of cameras in a super-weird situation that they put themselves in trying to document themselves writing an album.

The World's A Little Blurry on the other hand shows two siblings battling through some tough shit and turning it into gold on a shoestring recording budget.

hettygreen··on The anatomy of a smart bulb
I just purchased like $1500 worth of linear LED's from these guys for my workshop. I'm really sensitive to LED flicker and these were one of the only websites I found that specifically talked about flicker and claimed their LED's don't do it.

Does anyone else notice when LED's flicker at 60hz?

I was in a restaurant last week that had some of those LED's made to look like old time lights and the flicker in the room was terrible. If anyone moved their hand or the menu, you could see the strobe effect very easily.

hettygreen··on Is the world finally ready for ethical porn?
I guess I'll go first:

xconfessions by Lust Cinema is pretty good, especially the early ones. They are a collection of 15-20 minute long films based on fantasies that people have submitted. They have a natural progression showing the lead-up (the "why are these people having sex? part) and the actual sex feels pretty genuine.

Any others?

hettygreen··on The 115F Heat Is Killing Phones in Sardinia
I'm the CEO of a startup specializing in personal electronics and communications equipment designed to withstand rising global temperatures. We're in our second round of funding and are ramping up production as we speak. Our goal is to get global-warming-hardened phones into the hands of nearly every human on the planet before it's too late.

Sure, the mass-manufacture of 5 billion more phones is only going to contribute to this global warming, especially since we're making these in third-world countries under lax environmental laws. But that just means we'll be selling even more phones!

hettygreen··on The hidden cost of air quality monitoring
I live in an area where there is no air quality monitoring stations nearby, and was thinking about setting up my own little station to contribute the data.

I mostly look at aqicn.org and wondering if the airgradient kits can share data with that website?

I think I need someone to explain to me how some of these open source air quality monitors share their data and what websites can use the data.

Serious question: If I'm working from home, what's stopping my employer from replacing me with some dude in India or something for 1/3 the price?

I'm just having a hard time believing that we're at this moment in time where life suddenly got better for workers.

hettygreen··on Telly Is the First TV Paid for by Brands
Sure... but is there not a bunch of logistics related to procuring the hundreds of parts in the TV's bom, organizing international shipping, distribution and sales required to get the TV to the exact same grocery store as the lettuce?

The lettuce is grown in my own country and is already picked and tended to by low-key slave labour (migrant workers).

hettygreen··on Telly Is the First TV Paid for by Brands
Yes! This the dystopian future I was hoping for!

What's crazy is that TV's are already crazy cheap. I was in the grocery store a few weeks ago spending $5 on some lettuce and right next to the checkout was a big stack of 50" TV's that they were selling for $199.

I'm simplifying here, but how is mining a dozen rare-earth materials, making a handful of integrated circuits, casting a flawless LCD panel, pick and placing circuit boards, winding coils for magnetic speakers, molding a case out of plastic and shipping the entire large box across the world the equivalent of growing 40 heads of Romaine lettuce? Doesn't the lettuce just kinda grow from seeds with occasional watering?

Maybe a good startup would be a refrigerator that only opens after you let it track your movements, preferences, listen in on your conversations and then watch a few targeted advertisements in exchange for some free lettuce?

I stopped by Centralia on a road trip, it's a bit of a "tourist destination" in the atlas-obscura sense.. It was a very weird place. Roads were buckled everywhere, smoke was coming out of cracks.. enitire neighborhoods were abandoned and houses missing, etc.

hettygreen··on Samsung “space zoom” moon shots are fake, and here is the proof
This is just make hipsters get into old point and shoot digital cameras... good thing I kept my Canon A540.

All the subtle trickery manipulation that the smart phone's doing to reality is concerning. Smoothing people's faces, making their eyes pop, enhancing the shit out of the colours, and now plopping fake objects overtop of the real ones.

Future concerns of this technology should range from a low-key disconnect from reality, to the complete inability to photograph certain objects or locations.

Imagine dusting off a 30 year old digital camera, finding some AA batteries to put in it, snap a selfie and then realizing just how ugly we all are and how washed out the polluted world actually looks without a bunch of narcissism-pandering enhancements.

hettygreen··on Carmack Unscripted
Imagine if all of this money and brain power went to designing pleasant civic spaces where we could meet each other face to face.

The idea of a future where everyone is at home with screens strapped on their face, talking to their bubble-friends in a simulated tree-lined park while the outside world turns increasingly hostile is pretty sad.

Serious question: Has anybody else noticed that it's gotten very hard to talk to other people face-to-face lately? I feel like I'm expected to be an anonymous and obedient dopamine dispensing machine for the other person. Even worse, I've also noticed myself doing the same; getting home and then realizing I spent the whole conversation bragging or ranting while barely letting the other person speak. It's like the odds of having an even back-and-forth interaction is <20% post covid.

hettygreen··on Whatever Happened to Plasma TVs?
All of the comments about the heat generated by these old TV's has me contemplating repurposing them as electric heaters. They can even be looping some xmas time fireplace video.

But seriously, would these be any less efficient than an electric baseboard heater?

If the repurposed plasma screen heater is consuming 400W, is it releasing 400W of heat?

hettygreen··on Bay Area Vintage Base Ball
You're right, my bad. Was super-fresh though, and I can't imagine everyone just magically got along by 1886.
hettygreen··on Bay Area Vintage Base Ball
"1886 rules, equipment and etiquette."

I want to make some sort snarky comment about how slavery would have been legal and rampant in the era these people are choosing to glamorize.

But at the same time, I totally get it.. as an avid ice hockey fan, the game is now ruled by high-tech equipment and more importantly big-data analysis that has diminished personal creativity and the "art" of the game. Footage of historic games are also completely void of billboard advertisements everywhere and that strange artificially hyped environment with screens ordering fans to "CHEER LOUD NOW!".

hettygreen··on The Hidden Worlds of the Klein Tools TI250 Thermal Imager
I really admire the writer of the firmware here. This person spent the extra time to embed the actual data into the image. This is the kinda stuff I'd love to see officially documented in a PDF by the manufacturer, if we actually owned the things we owned.

My FLIR camera that I use for electronics only exports in JPEG, with the GUI baked into the image and some pretty crappy JPEG compression artifacts. Lame.
