herrherrmann··on StreetComplete: Fixing OpenStreetMap, one tiny quest at a time
Wow, that is one well-documented migration project! Thanks for sharing, I wasn’t aware they are so seriously on it.
herrherrmann··on CoMaps – FOSS Offline Maps
You can look up who the contributors are, e.g. in their open-source repo: https://codeberg.org/comaps There are also issues and projects with lots of discussions about what to prioritize, etc. So, bashing that “community” is too fuzzy is perhaps not very warranted. (Although I guess they should add a section “Who makes CoMaps?” to the FAQs or so.)
herrherrmann··on Building relationships with customers through support didn't turn out as hoped
I thought we’re talking about Building Relationships for a second. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2666920/Building_Relation...
herrherrmann··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
You can check this crowdsourced list for the compatibility of banking apps: https://github.com/PrivSec-dev/privsec.dev/blob/main/content...

Authenticators should work normally, as far as I know (unless Google Authenticator does anything special). Can’t say anything about Google Wallet. There might be more lists/forums where people share which setups are (not) working well for them.

In general, I had these concerns as well until a few months ago. But I am much more optimistic these days that things will just work well out of the box (have read many positive sentiments in blog posts and here on Hacker News).

herrherrmann··on Cleaning up after AI rockstar developers
I’m sure the general premise around AI-generated code is accurate. That being said, I’ve definitely had interesting moments where e.g. Claude produced code that matched the pre-existing codebase quite nicely, and slowly started building up its memory of how new pieces fit into the codebase in an idiomatic way. Then again, it started to throw in Tailwind-based CSS classes all of a sudden, because it assumed that Tailwind had been set up (it wasn’t).
herrherrmann··on Perry Compiles TypeScript directly to executables using SWC and LLVM
> IMO the maintenance story is more or less solved if you can keep AI agents refactoring and improving it in a loop.

That’s a weak argument, though, if the future of AI is totally unreliable when it comes to cost and quality. Right now I definitely wouldn’t want to depend on being able to infinitely access AI tools for such an important part of the toolchain.

Aside from that it’s just not attractive to trust a project made by one person.

herrherrmann··on Using AI to write better code more slowly
Did they? Genuine question, because I do wonder if people in some industries in the past were ever anxious about these specific things (especially skill attrition).
herrherrmann··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
Works well for me! Have been using Kagi for well over a year now. (I assume you’re talking about the German search results, not their German UI.)
herrherrmann··on Using Kagi Search with Low Vision
You mean the search results are loading slow? I’ve sometimes noticed that, but not really to a degree that it was significantly worse than Google.
herrherrmann··on London Mayor Blocks Palantir
Yes.
herrherrmann··on The Future of Obsidian Plugins
I had the same worries! It’s great to be positively surprised that it’s all good news in Obsidian’s case.
herrherrmann··on I'm going back to writing code by hand
That workflow just sounds exhausting to me. Would I always need to consider how much of a blast radius my AI-generated code might have? Sounds like there’s so much extra management going into these micro decisions that it ultimately defeats the purpose of generating code altogether.

I could see value in using it during the prototyping phase, but wouldn’t like to work like you described for a serious project for end users.

herrherrmann··on Why TUIs are back
There are a lot of points in there that are just generally bad in modern applications – e.g. UI inconsistencies, lack of automation and general configurability (shared ways to handle windows, layouts, keyboard shortcuts, etc.). I think it’s fair to say these things are just hugely lacking in modern operating systems. Linux might come close, but only with lots of tinkering. macOS is clearly lost and degrading now, and Windows was never close to having these qualities.

I don’t know if TUIs will be the answer, but it’s an interesting development!

herrherrmann··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
Sometimes it’s just about using the path of least resistance. I’ve also contributed to Apple Maps’ and Google Maps’ data, even though I’d prefer to exclusively contribute to OSM and other open platforms instead. But, it was just easier to go through a quick form in the (Apple|Google) Maps app, because that’s where I was at that point in time. Maybe the excuse is laziness and/or force of habit?

Edit: I also imagine the reach of the mainstream platforms to be much higher (e.g. Windows vs. Linux or Google Maps user reviews vs. <is there even an alternative?>).

herrherrmann··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
Maybe the GitHub comments didn’t properly load due to the weekly partial outage.
herrherrmann··on Industrial design files for Keychron keyboards and mice
They have at least the Q11 as a split keyboard model. Or did you mean something else?
herrherrmann··on The Appalling Stupidity of Spotify's AI DJ
Nice idea! Let’s hope that some other platform executes this (let’s be honest, Spotify doesn’t care about humans in any way).
herrherrmann··on “This is not the computer for you”
Depends on the kid’s hobby and purpose of the computer. I’ve always known that MacBooks are better for music making (especially driver hassle, audio signal reliability, etc.). Could I afford a MacBook as my first laptop? No. Did I buy a second-hand MacBook as soon as I could afford it, and have been happy with it since? Yes. As a teenager, I would’ve loved to buy a new MacBook for 500/600€.

I’m sure most other applications are less Mac-optimized, though (software development, 3d/graphics editing, gaming, …).

herrherrmann··on Ki Editor - an editor that operates on the AST
Thank you for that! I find it really daunting to try a new editor, but having a vs code extension as an entry point really helps me and increases the chances of trying it out soon!
herrherrmann··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
I wouldn’t put too much hope into foldables, at least not because of Apple’s involvement. They also released the Vision Pro. And there’s still the unsolved(?) problem of the screens getting easily scratched/destroyed if they’re not heavily protected and kept clean. (There are some informative teardown videos, e.g. by JerryRigEverything.)
herrherrmann··on /e/OS is a complete, fully “deGoogled” mobile ecosystem
Absolutely. This is handled very badly, and I was also surprised about the bad UX on that screen.
herrherrmann··on Leaving Google has actively improved my life
Apple is very anti-consumer, locking devices down, using planned obsolescence, fighting hard against movements for more open and fairer market practices and standards (e.g. switching to the standard USB-C port, allowing third-party app stores, exploiting developers releasing software on their platforms).
herrherrmann··on You Want to Visit the UK? You Better Have a Google Play or App Store Account
It doesn’t really seem like humorous hyperbole, though. It’s currently just factually incorrect. And it’s in your power to fix it, especially if you agree now in retrospect!
herrherrmann··on Instabridge has acquired Nova Launcher
Ugh, quite annoying. My next phone might be an Android (instead of the current iPhone), and I was looking forward to returning to Nova Launcher, after having used it many years ago as my favorite launcher. This feels like a big no-go now.

What are other good customizable launchers on Android nowadays?

herrherrmann··on Apple Creator Studio
Uff, I sure hope you are wrong! I don’t want to use the iCloud library for photos, but have my photos available as digital files elsewhere on the ssd. Of course, your prediction makes more sense from Apple’s standpoint, unfortunately.
herrherrmann··on Apple Creator Studio
I was also surprised to not see Photomator included. Wouldn’t it perfectly complement the lineup? I hadn’t thought of such a pessimistic interpretation, but now I’m worried as well …
herrherrmann··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
Super cute! Might try it out soon (my partner and I are both working from home most of the time).
herrherrmann··on Orion Browser
I’m surprised to hear about the bugs. I’ve been using Orion on iOS very happily for a week or so now, and haven’t encountered any issues. I’m actually close to writing a praising blog post for it!
herrherrmann··on Subreply – An open source text-only social network
Most of their other posts on the front page also aren’t exactly charismatic (or plain childish). A good early warning sign to stay away from that place!
herrherrmann··on Show HN: A Raycast-compatible launcher for Linux
Have you ever tried a launcher as powerful as Raycast? I can only recommend it. I use it for quick calculations, currency conversions, file lookups, translations, looking up http status codes, joining meetings, finding emojis, quickly checking my calendar, etc. etc. – so, perhaps a singular function might not warrant a launcher, but the sum of functions and keyboard-centric UI make it very valuable for me in my daily workflows.
