herendin2··on Venus could have been habitable for billions of years (2019)
Have a look at the Silurian Hypothesis. If one can examine things very closely, literally on the ground, then the window of detectability might extend to hundreds of millions of years, even billions perhaps. But from orbit, there's not so much hope of detection after a million years
herendin2··on Venus could have been habitable for billions of years (2019)
The oldest known undisturbed area of the Earth's surface is only about 2 million years old

It turns over very fast in geological time

herendin2··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
The canal isn't very deep there. Scuttling it would make the situation much worse
herendin2··on Adobe Photoshop's 'super resolution' made my jaw hit the floor
Upscaling could be described as the decompression stage of a lossy compression algorithm
herendin2··on Avoiding the Clothes Dryer Is Expensive
Anecdotally, combo washer/dryers are less reliable than separate machines. Maybe because there are more components that could break?

Don't know about third world, but compared to Europe and Asia, large homes with space for two machines may be more common in the US?

herendin2··on Can Governments Stop Bitcoin?
>I wonder if the different treatment is due to Bitcoin coming of age in the Obama era instead of the GWB era like those other examples?

>is it even technically possible for them to shut down Bitcoin if they wanted to?

You've almost answered your own question there. It's not more difficult to shut down due to a change in government behavior, it's difficult to shut down because it's highly decentralized, unlike earlier digital currencies

herendin2··on Data Immutability, Verifiability and Integrity Without the Blockchain Overhead
>Any party explicitly trying to cheat would face the court...

This is the exact issue that currency-based Blockchain systems avoid, at great cost - the essential requirement for a centralized third party to resolve all disputes

herendin2··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
I'd see locked firmware as a bug. Nvidia probably wouldn't agree.
herendin2··on Python 3.x: RCE in Python applications that accept floats as untrusted input
It sounds like an extreme minimal instruction set computer (MISC), and it's surprising how much is possible with even just one or two opcodes - that can easily be Turing-complete
herendin2··on Nvidia announces mining GPUs, cuts the hash rate of RTX-3060 in half
Nvidia is effectively incentivizing the cracking of their driver and firmware security signing with millions of dollars. Because a person who cracks it can build a more profitable mining farm

It's a sort of accidental bug bounty and I wonder if Nvidia have really thought this through?

herendin2··on Requests dropped when using Cloudflare’s free tier for a commercial project
But, I thought in your case you did know something was wrong: client complained and you saw 503 errors?
herendin2··on Barcode scanner app on Google Play infects 10M users with one update
The developer's street address, as shown in the malwarebytes screenshot, is obviously either incomplete or bogus. There's no city or country, and a weird unit number. Is Google Play really approving apps from such dubious sources?

Or does Google have the full address? Seems unlikely

herendin2··on 'Megascale' structures that humans could one day build
The Panama and Suez canals are also counter-examples. They were almost useless before they were completed
herendin2··on How the novel coronavirus has evolved
It's important because focussing on that 20% might be far more efficient and effective
herendin2··on Burnt $72k testing Firebase and Cloud Run and almost went bankrupt
Nice to have, but people want a throttle that shuts off dead at a certain number of dollars
herendin2··on US Navy destroyer shoots down an ICBM in milestone test
Thanks for this. I think I was probably wrong. Because the US reportedly used the SM-3 but did not use the SM-6 in this demonstration. That latter weapon has been claimed capable of stopping missiles with the characteristics you described, like the Chinese DF-21
herendin2··on US Navy destroyer shoots down an ICBM in milestone test
The Chinese test was very specifically with extremely long range (2500 miles) ballistic missiles, not conventional anti-ship missiles

https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/37662/chinese-long-ran...

herendin2··on US Navy destroyer shoots down an ICBM in milestone test
Context: China very recently claimed to have struck a ship at sea over a thousand miles away with an ICBM fired from the interior of China. That's an obvious threat to US carrier group-based force projection

So this demonstration looks likely a response to that, not specifically about WMD threats this time

Probably both these tests were under ideal conditions, as usual, but they're about sending a message as much as anything practical

herendin2··on Study helps explain why motivation to learn declines with age
"Stay hungry. Stay foolish" is an attempt to counteract this tendency
herendin2··on “I monitor my staff with software that takes screenshots”
Or paying someone to do it?
herendin2··on Memorizing a Deck of Cards
And also a type of intense mental exercise that is probably healthy
herendin2··on How Nespresso's coffee revolution got ground down
That's a very interesting idea. Any idea of the name of that Dutch company?
herendin2··on SAS Rescue 3 Trapped British Diplomats in Albania
>There are always rouge actors and..

rogue, not rouge which would imply these actors have beautified themselves with cosmetics

herendin2··on Patient 91: How Vietnam saved a British pilot and kept a clean Covid-19 sheet
Though I agree with you, I think this patient was receiving mechanical ventilation as well as ECMO. I don't know if they were simultaneous

Edit: Another plus for ECMO is that ventilation procedure creates a serious infection risk for doctors and nurses, but ECMO doesn't. Losing a doctor costs a lot more than $100K

herendin2··on Cryptocurrency Now Fully Legal in South Korea
OP asked for any reason to hold funds in USDC instead of USD, because they firmly believed there was no reason. I suggested one reason.

Your imagination beyond that is up to you.

herendin2··on Cryptocurrency Now Fully Legal in South Korea
They may make certain unjust laws, such as arbitrary civil forfeiture, impossible to enforce.

So ... you're in favor of innocent people having their money confiscated on the spot without due process?

herendin2··on Cryptocurrency Now Fully Legal in South Korea
For example, USD 10,000 is the absolute maximum you can bring into or take out of the US, or move between accounts in the US, without intrusive and possibly annoying declarations of source of funds, and potential exposure to instant civil forfeiture if you are deemed suspicious [0].

Stablecoins may not be practically subject to these restrictions (they may have other very serious risks and limitations, but not the same ones as USD).

So choose whatever currency is best for you. Isn't it nice to have a choice?

herendin2··on Critical PayPal Security Hack: Multiple Thefts Now Reported–Check Your Settings
No, the journalist could easily find independent evidence that suggests the corporate statement is bullshit.

It should be challenged and ridiculed. That is the journalist's duty, and they failed.

Their job is not to be a copy and paste machine for company press releases.

herendin2··on Ask HN: Am I right to ask for a raise?
You sound considerate and a little unconfident about money negotiations, which makes me think you're probably the kind of person who is paid less than your work deserves.

Make sure they understand the value of your work.

Think about how you will feel, and what you will do, if your raise is denied
