hereforphone··on DNS Esoterica – Why you can't dig Switzerland
I'm changing my name to this
hereforphone··on Experian, you have some explaining to do
If someone somehow hacks your brokerage account and steals everything, you may be completely out of luck. The bank will consider it your fault, not theirs, unless it's a mass hack (multiple accounts). The law will probably agree with them, and you'll be out your savings.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Are you hiking? How old are you and how many kilometers can you Hike?
You can get a lot better at it, if you want. Start slow and ramp up slow or you will end up with foot and leg issues. In a few years you'll be walking over mountains.

I came here for this
hereforphone··on The Pentagon uses a secret program to wage proxy wars
Do you? Contacts in Afghanistan are sharing videos of people being whipped / beaten in the streets. And it reportedly gets much worse. I haven't seen anything about this mentioned in Western media.

This is reminiscent of how war protests in my liberal city stopped suddenly as soon as Obama was elected, and never restarted though he bolstered troop levels (initiated surges). The war was never the main point.

hereforphone··on The Pentagon uses a secret program to wage proxy wars
Do you believe the media has relatively clear political convictions? The treatment of presidents and parties in the US changes drastically depending on who's in power. It's almost like a joke.

Allow women in Afghanistan to live under horrible conditions under an oppressive ultra-Islamic regime. Strange how everyone forgot about that one as soon as the yellow/blue flag became a meme.
hereforphone··on Must be this tall to write multi-threaded code (2015)
No, you're absolutely right: Erlang is magnificent and superior.
hereforphone··on What FreeBSD can offer compared to other operating systems (2020)
The reason FreeBSD is not my daily driver is 1) limited video card support, and 2) limited steam/proton support. In other words, I game on my desktop machine, and play Windows games under Steam in Linux.

I have moved to using FreeBSD for my servers though, and am happy with it for the most part.

hereforphone··on Microsoft Purview: Additional classifiers for Communication Compliance (preview)
I shouldn't have to belong to a particular organization (especially a politically active one) in order to have a job in my field.
hereforphone··on CNN cutting back on over-hyping everything as “breaking news”
Does anyone outside of an airport still watch CNN?
hereforphone··on Coffee drinking linked to lower mortality risk, new study finds
Mortality risk remains 100%.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: How Do Chiropractors Work?
I've had good and bad ones. It's hit and miss. Good ones can change your life.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Plus free equipment donated by the USA. Plus no media coverage at all covering your atrocities because the media is aligned with those that pulled out, so everyone's going to focus elsewhere (Ukraine as an example).

I lived there for more than a year and a half. The things happening there now are terrible. But you don't know about it, because it's politically incorrect to discuss it right now. It's a massive tragedy.

hereforphone··on Ask HN: Is Elm Dead?
I thought this would be about the email client.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Do you have a cheat sheet for life?
Life's one of those things that you can't explain. As I've aged I've learned facts that I can't communicate to younger people. Presumably more of these will reveal themselves to me as I age more.

Bible. Exercise. Mechanical keyboard. James Allen books. Ignore politics. Throw away your TV. That's my cheatsheet.

hereforphone··on Is equity the only way to incentivise contributors in the absence of salary?
Equity is delayed salary if the endeavor becomes profitable. So almost never.
hereforphone··on People hated shopping carts when they first came out
On the list of ways to judge the quality of a society, people putting carts back where they belong is up there with using turn signals.
hereforphone··on How This Ends
How long is your lifetime? Does it start with a 2 by any chance?
hereforphone··on Ask HN: How would you make quick money?
Buying or selling?
hereforphone··on Vintage computer ads
You may want to double-check the definition of 'incredibly poor'.
hereforphone··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
Erdoğan is a dictator propped up on Islamic sentiment and tradition. He is not a nationalist.
hereforphone··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job to sell my stock options?
Does your contract include a clause that states you'll lose these options if you're fired?
hereforphone··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
Nice try
hereforphone··on Ancient civilisation under eastern Turkey estimated to be 11k-13k years old
Those borders didn't exist at the time the "ancient civilization" was constructed. So what's the point?

hereforphone··on Show HN: 1,900 remote company profiles with tech stacks and employee benefits
Culture is just as important as salary. Not the stupid kid-bait like beer Fridays and ping pong tables, but the overall vibe.
hereforphone··on Tech Salaries in 2022: Why the Six Figure Pay Makes Techies Feel Underpaid
No it's not. I wish it were. At my prior job the leadership, all the way to the top, made it uncomfortable for non-Indians to work there. They'd bring people over from India, hold the H1B over their heads, and work the crap out of them. They weren't happy from what I could tell, and most non-Indians left by the time I also did.

And from what I gather that's not an isolated incident.

hereforphone··on Ask HN: How do you deal with rude interviewers?
I'm in my 40s. I've had several really bad interviews, and a few good ones. My advice to you is to stand up and walk out when the interviewers become mocking, overly pedantic, or arrogant. Consider it a reflection of office culture.
