herculity275··on Generate audiobooks from E-books with Kokoro-82M
Very nice! I fiddled with this idea a few months back but the models available at the time were woefully slow on a macbook. Will definitely give this a spin, there's a large category of web serials and less popular translated novels that never get audiobook releases.
herculity275··on Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2024?
Highly recommend Doomed City, probably the most complex novel the Strugackis ever wrote.
herculity275··on Interview with gwern
I'm not entirely sure what you're referring to, but pretty much every major 20th century intellectual had misanthropic undertones (and sometimes overtones) - people who read/think/write an exceptional amount don't tend to be super people-loving.
herculity275··on I Followed the Official AWS Amplify Guide and Was Charged $1,100
> Even having the option of a hard spend limit would be hazardous, because accounting teams might push the use of such tools, and thereby risk data loss incidents when problems happen.

"Hazardous" feels like the wrong word here - if your customer decides to enact a spend limit it should not be up to you to decide whether that's good for them or not.

herculity275··on Trump wins presidency for second time
They have similar ideas about Moldova and the Baltics. The intense militarization within the Russia is not going to end anytime soon - we've seen this play out in Germany 90 years ago, why do you think this time will be different?
herculity275··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Giving big Chamberlain energy.
herculity275··on Boxxy puts bad Linux applications in a box with only their files
Is there a reason why projects opt for a Discord server rather than setting up a subreddit? Is it simply because Discord is easier to moderate?
herculity275··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
> there is definitly a suggestion and I would even say more than that. the OP comment literaly says he is on the payroll of russia lol

Being on Russian payroll is not a criminal offense, there are plenty of RT-affiliated journalists who still operate in the West.

herculity275··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
The comment you're responding to just speculates that he will escape to Russia based on his (very consistent) views and activism, there's no suggestion that he should go to prison because of them.
herculity275··on Kim Dotcom's extradition to the U.S. given green light by New Zealand
Did he get hundreds of millions in cash and dozens of luxury cars by pirating songs on the Internet?
herculity275··on London Tube map redesigned by Essex lecturer goes viral
In London lots of platform signs are directional - "northbound" vs "southbound", "eastbound" vs "westbound". Navigating them effectively often requires knowing (at least vaguely) which direction you're moving in. This map completely removes that intuition, in that sense it's strictly less useful than the default TfL one.
herculity275··on There Is No Antimemetics Division (2018)
I think it's just micro-fiction, a 1 sentence (2, if you count the comment) short horror story. The chain lift stops making noise right before the roller coaster car is about to drop. If humanity is on a roller coaster, "the drop" can be interpreted as either the civilizational collapse or as some kind of a Singularity event.
herculity275··on There Is No Antimemetics Division (2018)
The author has also written a short horror story about simulated intelligence which I highly recommend: https://qntm.org/mmacevedo
herculity275··on Does Astrology Work?
Kind of you to link the Wiki page as the full sentence that mentions Mullis' astrology belief is: "Mullis professed a belief in astrology and wrote about an encounter with a fluorescent, talking raccoon that he suggested might have been an extraterrestrial alien."
herculity275··on Show HN: Learn a new language by speaking with AI
I've seen a few apps attempt this, e.g. Talkpal (https://talkpal.ai)

Wonder how long it will take Duolingo to roll out a its own version

herculity275··on The word 'bot' is increasingly being used as an insult on social media
Noticed this in Georgian politics - paid shills and people whose behavior is indistinguishable from paid shills are increasingly referred to as "bots" with no presumption of being non-human.
herculity275··on VideoGigaGAN: Towards detail-rich video super-resolution
Wonder how long until Hollywood CGI shops have these types of models running as part of their post-production pipeline. Big blockbusters often release with ridiculously broken CGI due to crunch (Black Panther's third act was notorious for looking like a retro video-game), adding some extra generative polish in those cases is a no-brainer.
herculity275··on Reddit Will License Its Data to Train LLMs, We Made a FF Extension to Replace
IME the niche subs are still doing fine, it's the popular ones that are getting astroturfed and Eternal September'ed into oblivion. I do expect the LLM bots to eventually render the platform unusable, they would need to implement a very aggressive personhood verification policy to prevent that.
herculity275··on Claude 3 beats Google Translate
Didn't "Attention Is All you Need" bill transformers primarily as a translation model?
herculity275··on Meta Horizon OS
> Sony doesn't publish numbers but a good guess is 3-4 million active players.

I find it really hard to believe that 3 million people put on PSVR2 every month. That thing gets basically no content.

herculity275··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
> People don't go to indie concerts because of a spotify track

Anecdotically I've attended multiple gigs for artists I discovered via Spotify.

herculity275··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
> Unfortunately, humanity's future is in the hands of <redacted>.

> <redacted>

> And they are doing a lot more than this.

I'm really curious who/what Elon was calling out here.

herculity275··on Esperanto, Toki Pona, Swahili, Indonesian
> He said that if he could have chosen a language, instead of English, to be the world’s shared second language, then it would be Swahili or colloquial Indonesian. He said both of these languages have been learned by millions of people as their second language, so all the weird edge-cases have worn away, and they are as smooth and beautiful as a river stone. No weird grammar. No weird tones. No exceptions.

I have no knowledge of Swahili and perhaps it really is all that but this statement makes no sense - English, French, Russian, Arabic and plenty of other languages have been learned by millions of people as their second language yet they still have plenty of weird grammar, exceptions, and edge-cases.

herculity275··on Vice website is shutting down
It's still early days but things are definitely trending that way. Google Search is significantly worse than it used to be. Twitter is a cesspool of blue checked spam. Reddit is still functioning, but I keep seeing obviously transformer-generated comments more and more often (and I'm sure I'm reading tons more without even realizing). Once Sora and its ilk become widespread Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram are gonna get flooded with entirely synthetic content.
herculity275··on Stable Diffusion 3
It's not about assigning blame. A revolutionary technology enables revolutionary change and all sorts of bad actors will take advantage of it.
herculity275··on AstraZeneca unveils successes in treatment of lung cancer
So sorry to hear about your dad!

> I also ran a failed medical tourism company which sent people to get this treatment in Cuba

Why did the company fail? How effective was the treatment?

herculity275··on The day I canceled my Spotify subscription
I've had the same exact experience. I had to stop relying on Spotify-generated playlists because they just kept giving me the same familiar songs over and over again.
herculity275··on Alexei Navalny has died
Navalnyists are soft-banned in Russia. They can't make any meaningful public statements without hitting one of the censure laws (e.g. it's illegal to say anything about the war that differs from the official Kremlin line). The FSB just slaps the "foreign agent" designation onto the more loud ones and makes their lives difficult enough for them to migrate away. It's a slow cleanse but it's pretty effective.
herculity275··on Sora: Creating video from text
Your sentence is a strawman but the logic does apply quite soundly to e.g. guns.
herculity275··on Cryostasis Revival
That's about as meaningful as saying that your yesterday's self is not you. Once you apply the ship of Theseus to your higher brain function thoroughly enough things can get really weird.
