I could fill you a long list of dos and don'ts, what do look for and what to avoid, but cycling is inherently practical, and you have to learn it by doing it.

As you are by now aware, we're pretty much exposed to all kinds of dangers, and sometimes bad things happen. But if you aren't discouraged, and you keep on practicing, eventually you'll learn how to avoid most of the worst case scenarios where you could find yourself by your own negligence and/or lack of attention.

The important thing to retain is that you have to have the muscle memory to know how to react properly when in a tight spot. That's why reading about things isn't much of a help — you don't have time to think in order to act properly. My advice? Practice, and practice riding defensively.

I live in a very rough country for cyclists — Brazil. And in order to find my place on the road I have to be twice, thrice as careful as I would have to be somewhere else. But I've found that if you play it safe and learn to be nice and respectful of what the other perceives as its rightful place on the road, thanking everyone that shows you even the smallest act of kindness or basic respect for you, you'll be surprised how much things change on the road around you.

Be nice and don't try to be a hero. You're a glorified pedestrian and your skin is no match for steel.

I haven't visited that subreddit on a long time, so I'm knowing this from you. What a pity. I visited on a similar reason to yours: to know how my own life can be taken suddenly, without notice or warning.

Since I move around exclusively by bicycle, I paid particular attention to the videos where cyclists met their untimely fate. I've learned a lot watching those videos, since it gave me a more clear perspective on how some things, apparently not too extreme, are insanely dangerous traps to a cyclist (riding near a truck with open wheels, for instance, even if at some distance).

Shame it's quarantined...

henriquemaia··on Why Captchas have gotten so difficult
This is how things are done at the Federal University I'm currently attending. I have filed a complaint against the university on the grounds that they're using Federal resources (the students' labor, whose place there is being paid by the government) to enrich a private, international corporation (Google).

This is wrong on so many levels.

There's no decision yet, and the process is still running.

I'm not an UX consultant and what justinclift said makes sense. Maybe the downgrading process could be a bit more streamlined, but, since you're dealing with data, erring on the side of caution does not seem too bad of a strategy.

It’s not up to the law to take upon itself the role of arbiter of society’s truer mores.

Once you establish a strong connection between what is lawful and what is moral, you open up the ominous gate of any future conflation of moral duty with any reproachable reach of law.

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, the right flow of conversation, from the point of view of Alice, would be like this:

> Alice: "Do you know whether Carol will come to the party?"

Bob: Yes, I know. (or No, I don't know).

Awkward silence. What a strange way to conduct a conversation.

henriquemaia··on Ask HN: What things have richly rewarded the time invested in mastering them?
My case: reading poetry.

At the starting point of my poetic journey, I was ignorant of the genre, very opposed to it (for I couldn’t make the sense out of it) and arrogantly sure that poetry was mostly a scam.

Fortunately for me, a teacher of mine at college had this whole class around Portuguese poets. We had to read them for each other and explain the meaning, while he provided solid interpretations to the texts we were working on.

Thinking I had something in me clearly broken for I could not make the sense of any of the readings we were assigned, I got myself to go the library, picked up one of Fernando Pessoa’s heteronyms to read, and gave myself the task of reading at least a poem a day, trying to make whatever sense I could make out of it — whatever long it took for me to read the whole book. Also, if poetry was supposed to be this highly aesthetic experience, I would have to read the poem (or poems) out loud. And that I did.

When I had finished Pessoa’s book, I felt something was changing in me. Most of the poems still sounded nonsensical, but the ones that worked, the ones I felt I got a sense out of it, really made me feel that I was heading somewhere. So I drudged along.

After the finishing the first book (after a month or two), I picked up another. This time one Alberto Caeiro, one of Pessoa’s most beloved heteronyms. I can’t exactly pinpoint where the magic happened, but, suddenly, I was no longer the same self that started that journey. Now I was not reading out of obligation, but reading as a necessity. Poetry had gone under my skin, and I was starting to get this huge crave to read more and more poetic works.

To make a long story a bit shorter, nowadays I’m an avid reader of poetry, having read most of the great poets of Portuguese literature. I find particularly at home in the poetic genre and I’m even trying for a masters degree in philosophy working on... a poet!

This to me was the thing that I felt most accomplished by putting myself to master it. Looking back to how I felt before; knowing what I now know about poetry, my thoughts are the exact opposite of what they were in regards to poetry. Now I cannot even imagine how I managed to live my whole life at that point without giving poetry a try.

henriquemaia··on So is it nature not nurture after all?
One interesting thing about genetics, and a very conspicuous one, is that randomness plays a not so little part in the process. Otherwise you wouldn’t even have evolution. How could a species adapt to a changing environment if heritability was the only determining factor?

In that case, it could be justified to think of you as one of those wildcards that nature continuously throws into the mix to sharpen the species adaptability.

That is, if you spread your genes around and those also prove more adapted. And so on.

henriquemaia··on Confessions of a Fake News Writer
I may sound too jaded, but how do I know this piece (or book, the one reviewed here?) is not fake? Maybe I've gone way meta on this, but isn't kind of oxymoronic to write about how one fakes what one wrote and then expect the reader to take that particular writing seriously? The Kantian in me is particularly bothered with this. ;)

Edit: typos.

henriquemaia··on Apple Patent Turns Car Windscreen into Giant Augmented Reality Screen
I agree with your conclusion (the current state of affairs), but one could argue that VR has developed less optimally than if you had the porn industry enthused with the prospects of being the first players getting to that market. But this is pure speculation.
henriquemaia··on Apple Patent Turns Car Windscreen into Giant Augmented Reality Screen
Though that comment may be somewhat playful, the affirmation makes good biological sense if you consider that porn messes almost directly with one of our most basic instincts. And although you can argue that ads do the same, the thing is that on ads, if they’re regulated and suited to the broadest public consumption, the appeal to the basic instincts has to be much more subtle. That makes it is less direct and less capable than porn for driving the tech resources to its development. But the difference may not be as substantial as I imagine it to be.

henriquemaia··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
Since it is somewhat risky if you’re not completely sure of what you are doing (as is my case, since I would be almost blindly following steps), and since there is a software hack to jailbreak it, I preferred the latter.

But the community there is very helpful and I’m convinced that if I were to physically hack it, I would find enough help there to guide me through.

henriquemaia··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
With a jailbroken Kindle you can, for instance, install koreader[1], a feature-rich alternative ebook reader application that enhances the somewhat limited capabilities of Kindle’s native reader.

For instance, with koreader you can open djvus, epubs, fb2 (if you’re onto those formats), but what makes koreader especially appealing to me is that it is a far better pdf reader than Kindle’s native.

Or you can look for a pool of available hacks[2] that make Kindle’s overall usage far more suited to your own particular needs. One example is the screensavers hack that allows you to choose either to use your own images (somewhat interesting if you’re onto customizing them to your tastes); or you can, as I prefer, to use that last displayed screen as the screensaver, as this allows you to keep a book’s opened page in display while you are taking notes or doing some other book research related task.

Some of these new features are now so essential to my Kindle’s experience that I can’t imagine myself using an original one without jailbreaking it. Also, I have my Kindle since 2015 and I’m in no hurry to get a newer or more capable model. As it is, it is very tailored to my academic needs.

I would argue that if a solution is more expensive or harder to maintain, it is not simpler. Teleologically speaking, being simpler is a bigger umbrella which covers many facets of the intended solution.
